Did the homerun occur at Fenway Park or at the Detroit Tiger's stadium? Was it hit by the home team or the away team. I know both the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox have the tradition that a home-run hit by the visiting team into the stands must be thrown back to the field in order to symbolically cancel it, and extreme measures including shaming and theft of the ball in question will occur in order to keep this tradition.

Which is complete crap.  What if he had ripped the ball away from a little kid?  If someone catches a ball, they should feel free to keep it, especially in the playoffs.  Your team isn't going to win or lose based on whether or not the ball was thrown back.

It's also theft, for which he should be prosecuted. Those balls, particularly in the playoffs, have actual value

It's originally a Cubs tradition that other teams in the league have been picking up within the past few years, in part because you see it so often at Wrigley Field.

/Yes, I know there are loads of racists here - and many of them are exactly the type of racist who's been emboldened by the post-2008 right-wing media's constant euphemistic harping about black people. I listen to our local talk radio station for fun sometimes, and the callers often genuinely terrify me.
//Didn't really care about this incident (it's a stupid, embarrassing tradition but a tradition nonetheless, and at least he didn't take the ball from a little kid) until I read "bye, Trayvon."

It's more people like you who give the city these days the reputation of being racist but you have clearly never been.   They voted in a black governor and were all Obama. Ortiz is one of the most beloved athletes the city has seen.  A lot changes over time, not like you.

Subtract the Yankees' worldwide prestige, history of success and players who exemplify the best of what professional athleticism is all about, and you might be onto something.

Huh? Who's that? The Red Sox were the last baseball team to integrate, but the Redskins were the last  sportsteam as far as I know. And the Celtics were the first basketball team to integrate, I think. And, though I'm not old enough to have been around for the busing riots, I really don't know what you're talking about in terms of encouraging racism and bigotry. I don't think Boston is any more or less racist than any other major city I've ever visited.

BTW - Yes, I know Papi juiced. But I'm not claiming the game isn't tainted or that the Red Sox are some paragone of virtue. I think, like alot of the teams, they are looking to move on past that era, knowing they all bear some of the taint.

I'm subby. A big Red Sox fan and though I didn't watch the game but when I read all the stories I felt bad. Boston is a great town and lots to do and see (and welcome tourists!) but there are too many people in Boston like this jerk. I hope the media finds out his name and publishes it.

He abused a visiting fan, which sucks, and he was openly racist about it. The last year of the old Yankee Stadium me and other Red Sox fans went there for a Yankees/Red Sox game and we wore team gear. The fans and the workers were nothing but nice.

2013-10-14 11:28:48 AM
In Chicago, we throw the opponents' home runs back. If you are smart, you bring an extra ball with you. That way, if you catch a home run from the other team, throw that ball back onto the field and keep the actual home run ball.

People will chant "Throw it back" until something gets thrown back to the field. If you don't do it, somebody next to you with a spare ball will toss theirs onto the field. Generally, nobody resorts to stealing the ball out of somebody else's hands.

I've been a yank fan since I was a kid, I visited old Yank stadium and fenway, both trips I ran into assholes - doesn't matter where you go they always exist. I went to an irish pub to have a few beers, little did I know it was a Sox Haven, mix alcohol some people really get stupid in a hurry.
The percentage of assholes to fans are quite wide, after 20 minutes in a Sox pub I was shooting darts and having beers with two die hard fans.

I've ran into my share of pricks, they give baseball a bad name among with the cheaters, fans should outcast them because they simply give their team a bad name and reputation.

Prior to 2004, there sure were a lot of fans of other teams who still liked the Sox for the old park and tough luck.  Your pink hats, Sweet Caroline, 2 rings, overexposure on ESPN, and general asshat behavior at Sox road games have taken that from you.
