Everyone who brought this on should be cockpunched to the point that all of their future generations should be denied access to the gene pool.

"We take the safety of children very seriously and school crossing patrols exist to make sure children can cross roads as safely as possible."

Yeah, god forbid you associate crossing the road safely with a positive experience to reinforce the practice in children's brains.

Yes, but crossing the street without assistance is far better than receiving a "devils slap".

Screw these people. Seriously. They need to just get out of the gene pool.

To be fair, this was not because he was high-fiving children but was not paying appropriate attention to the road. Still a stupid reason since people who are not as moronic as educational administration do not need to have constant vigilance or risk failing to notice a vehicle coming, and the majority of people are cognizant of school crossings since there are usually school zones to slow you down and people stopping traffic frequently.

Also because he'd have to be spectacularly inattentive to actually be worse than no one at all.

Quantum Apostrophe: So school boards are filled with tin pot dictators all over the place, not just Montreal?

Oh, god. My last principal before I quit teaching was the most micro-managing c*nt I've ever known. To save money in the budget, she made a deal with another principal to share me half time with another school and split my salary. So, I got to start my day at an early-start school, get an hour lunch (a luxury, for sure), and end at a late-start school. She made life hell for 60 teachers and 800 students for five years before the district requested that she leave. ("Quit, or we fire you.") I was part of the second exodus of teachers from that school. Everybody else followed by the third year. I know exactly ONE teacher out of the original sixty, who still teaches there.

I was on the 5-person hiring committee and the only NO vote when she was hired. She never even spent a year in a classroom. She was a school psychologist at a private school in Chicago who made the leap straight to administration in Arizona public schools. That's farked up.

Nope, it's still trolling. There's this one throwaway line in the article:
"They also said I was going out into the road without looking properly."
Then the article launches into a quote from some "outraged parent".

Having been a crossing guard, the safety of the children is supposed to be absolutely paramount. My boss would watch you your first week to make sure you do things right, then would randomly inspect people from time to time. If this guy was calling kids out into the street without making sure it was safe and cars were either stopped or too far away to pose a danger to anyone, then he deserves his firing.

He also deserves it if he was threatening the children with a machete when they didn't cross the street quickly enough.

One caveat: If the crossing guard is 100% focused on the road and not the children, they don't particularly have a reason to pay attention to him. If someone is "cool" enough to high-five in the eyes of a child, then they're "cool" enough to listen to when they said "wait" and "go."

You are supposed to focus on both. You tell the kids to wait at the corner before you go into the street. You then watch traffic from all sides until all who would cross your plane (the particular way you're blocking at the moment) are stopped. But you also have to keep an eye on kids on the corner still. A lot of it is the kids respecting you enough to obey your command. In my experience, 99% of elementary and 95% of high school will do that. It's the middle school douchebags who think they don't have to. And one of them nearly got hit near my corner because he didn't listen.

Pardon me, but I would think an instruction not to do that mistake any more might be in order in this kind of case.  It's not like the guy's a machine incapable of changing what he does.

why would you even think that? you would assume this person who we have no reason to believe has lead less then a decent life, retired, but still wanted to be a part of society, helping kids cross the street, school crossing guard isn't a career choice. lured kids into the street? Fark you!

This.

I'd think his boss could take him aside after his shift and give him a heads-up that some of the parents or administrators think it's distracting and possibly a safety issue. And while it's good that the kids like him enough to listen, it's best to CYA.

And that would be it and they could handle it like adults.

But they can't.
