If you tip, you're an enabler. If people had to reach higher, they would make something of themselves. Instead we just throw money at them like they're a charity case. It's pretty simple.

What kind of world does this guy live in an where the pool boy blows up your inflatable toys for you and the staff at the gym brings you bottled water? If someone does that, they don't want a tip, they want to have sex with you.

So, we're tipping everyone now?

And the kids write thank you notes. :)

Jesus... fark all of them. How much do I send my insurance agent's secretary for billing me? How much do I tip the guy that greases up my ass for a colonoscopy?

How about tipping me for a change? I work hard too.

You really don't tip housekeeping? Do you have any idea what a hard job that is, especially for what they are paid?

2013-10-13 03:24:27 PM
Sure would be nice if peoples' employers would start paying them.

But this way they can claim it's a tipping job and charge less than minimum wage.  And we all know that that allows the Job Creators© to hire more people and thus keep the economy booming.

A tip is what you give to an individual who goes beyond the normal expectation of service.

Hotel cleaning staff are making a mint off of me. I leave them a tip, after I've already cleaned the entire room myself because I don't want them to think I'm a slob.

9. Hotel housekeeping

Do not disturb sign for the win. Seriously, there's no reason to let them enter your room every day. I can spend my 4 day business trip with the 75 towels that are already in the room.

Here's a tip.  Get a job where you can afford to live without alms from everyone else.

I'll just say that I recently spent two weeks in Spain.  Whether it's Spanish mentality or the lack of tipping, the service is very slow unless you're at the bar.  The staff has no incentive to upsell you on anything or to pad the bill if they're not getting tipped on a percentage of it.  After experiencing the no tipping system, I prefer the tipping.

2013-10-13 04:01:47 PM
I tip waiters, hookers, and anyone that takes my kid to the bathroom. If you aren't directly enabling a bodily function, then no tip for you.

Tipping a DJ $5 to play one song?
That isn't a tip, that's a bribe.

I always give the French maid the tip. Nudge nudge wink wink.

No, that's just Spain. Greece has a no tipping system and it has always worked well. Least it did the last time I was there, no idea now with the economy in the toilet.

I just read half of the article, but I saw a pattern of $5-$10 throughout...

So, get lots of ones and fives when you're going out for a night on the town or a vacation (ones for delis, cafe's, etc, fives for stylists, concierge, spa employees, etc)?

/already does that
//not that she ever has the money

I tip all of these (Except 1, which isn't an issue since I get my hair cut at a barber shop and 7; never even thought about it), but not the guys who deliver furniture. Seemed like that was more of a regular job and not a personal service. I'll probably start doing that now. My rule is to tip anyone who makes less money than I do, if they're performing a personal service. So no Christmas gift for the USPS carrier; they make a healthy living and they're just dropping stuff off at the street/front door without me asking them to.

FTFA:
Tip amount: The tour guide gets $5 per person per day (so if you and your husband went on a 5-day tour, you'd tip him $50) and the bus driver should get a couple dollars or so for each day he drove, says Smith.

WTF language is this, Lower Mississippi Honkeybonics?

2013-10-13 04:20:54 PM
1. I don't go to a hair stylist.
2. Sure, if I ask for something special, I tip.
3. I don't go places to sit around a hotel pool, so no.
4. $1-$5, depending on how drunk I am and how much I want to hear a particular song.
5. I usually travel light, but if I needed a hand, courtesy shuttle guy gets a buck or two for his/her trouble. Also, if the driver proactively grabs my bag(s), I tip a buck or two. That's for going above and beyond.
6. I go to a regular gym, so the staff will never do anything worth tipping and I don't ask them to.
7. When my great-aunt was in an assisted-living facility, my parents would bring flowers and bake treats for the staff. Probably better appreciated by the staff, IMO. We'll see how I feel about this topic when my parents are in that position. Maybe a cash tip would be appropriate.
8. Once again, extra service, extra (monetary) consideration.
9. I always tip hotel housekeeping staff about $5/day at the end of my stay, even if I don't need them to clean my room every day.
10. Okay, I never considered tipping a tour guide. Maybe next time.

Pokey.Clyde: So, we're tipping everyone now?

It's pretty much coming to that. I've been seeing tip jars at more and more places. I was in a liquor store the other day and they had a tip jar next to the cash register. A farking tip for ringing up my purchase? What's next, tipping the guy at 7-11 for selling me gas?

I tip the wait staff, that's it. And no, making me a cup of coffee is not waiting on me, if I stand at a counter and you hand it to me, be it food or drink, no tip.
