There were a few stores here in Oklahoma that reportedly had signs up stating it was down due to the government shutdown.  And the comments on the facebook pages of the reporting news stations were great to read.

/even better to read with bowl of popcorn.

There will be an uprising. Will the Army be willing to fire on it's own citizens, or will it side with them and take out our corrupt government?

Well yeah, with all that free time without having to work, what else are they supposed to do all day?  Can only play XBox for so long.

An awful lot of those "affected" took to twitter pretty quickly to complain about their food stamps not working. I wonder how many groceries they could purchase for the cost of a smartphone and monthly data plan...

Oh noes.  Some folks might actually have to go out and get jobs.

Judging by the twitter comments some of the folks commenting used EBT.  WTF?  Why are we giving money to folks rich enough to have a computer and internet?

A lot of food had to be thrown out today after it sat in carts warming while people waited for the system to go back up.

You haven't seen many zombie movies, have you? You'll run out of bullets before they run out of people.

/It boggles my mind how rich Republicans want to eliminate programs like EBT. It's the only thing that keeps the country from going Paris 1789.

If you are not trolling, I can answer that.

The Internet isn't just something special. It is actually an extension of ourselves. It has become so entrenched in our lives that not being part of it is detrimental to society.

It is disgusting how much the poor have in this country, we are supposed to be number one.

First of all, food stamp usage should disqualify you from internet usage. These people have nothing to shoot for, thus shoot for nothing. :(

Speaking as a raving liberal, the idea that people who can afford phones and data plans need assistance in purchasing food does tweak my inner Daily Mail reader slightly. I can't help but feel that the government buying your food should only happen for people living in abject, grinding poverty.

I see the "if you have a computer/cell phone you're too rich to deserve food stamps" derp has already begun.

Galaxy S4 unlocked: 600 (max). Unlimited text data and phone: 80/month for 12 months. $1560/year. Or about 4 months food at 400/month or 3 months food at $500/month.

My family of four spent $650 last month with nary a Twinkie or Dorito in sight.

You are aware that Walmart sells computers for less than a cost of a smartphone? And internet services can be less than $10/month? Also, libraries and schools?

Not being part of the workforce, absorbing public support, and using twitter to moan about your electronic debit foodstamps being unavailable for a few hours is detrimental to society.

Pretty much, but if a store was smart they would post a sign in the window about it being down a hour into it

You'd be surprised how many signs people will ignore while they're shopping.

Yes, even if it obstructs their walking path.

It's awesome how people fail to recognize what happens when desperate people get hungry.

hahaha poor people got hungry and angry.  Nothing bad can happen if this were to happen on a larger scale.

I pay taxes to my city to maintain free wi-fi downtown, so that people have the opportunity to use the internet when they otherwise normally wouldn't.

If you're complaining about poor people finding ways to access the internet, which is a vital piece of infrastructure for a number of things INCLUDING JOB-SEEKING, then kindly STFU and go sit on a hot, rusty, serrated pitchfork.

/Equating poverty with moral failings is a large part of what has screwed up our society.
