Buy a burr grinder and a cheap espresso machine and you're STILL going to end up with a superior product and save hundreds of dollars a year.

Everybody calling it overpriced don't realize that Starbucks sells more than the sugary confection drinks.

2013-10-12 06:21:21 PM
yeah, but they are always offering to pay you Tuesday for a cup today

I'm in a Starbucks right now, drinking an iced white chocolate mocha, so I'm getting a kick...

/Their true purpose is to make ridiculously sweet drinks with a hint of coffee. I occasionally indulge.

How is Starbucks pretentious? It's clean. That's what I like about Starbucks.

If I walk into a gas station I'm not buying anything to eat that's not factory wrapped. Because gas stations tend to look and feel dirty.

Starbucks is clean.

Normals are weird. I wouldn't take it even if it was free (coffee that is).  Blech.

I don't get the hate over Starbucks.  The pricing is in line with their competitors on the basic cup of coffee.

Also, if you lived in the Midwest and in a medium to smaller city, there was no decent coffee - outside a restaurant or diner and you can't sit all day in either place and do work or read a book for much of the 90's.  Where I grew up, there was nothing remotely resembling a cafe.

I don't get it.

I'm a black coffee drinker (as in I drink black coffee, I am not black myself. NTTAWWT) and Starbucks is probably the best quick stop coffee out there.

It's not great, but it's better than the coffee at any fast food place or convenience store, and it's better than anything that comes out of an off the shelf Mr coffee.

And it rarely costs more than $2. I just don't get the degree of the hate.

Actually Dunkin Donuts, Mcdonalds, and Kangaroo gas stations have better joe than starbucks.

We don't have Dunkin Donuts in Cali (as far as I know).  I have no idea what Kangaroo is, and in any case, no gas station serves decent coffee here (it really is watered down swill).  McDonalds - yeah its decent - they made it much better a few years ago.  But if I'm with a laptop, book or with a friend, I'm not hanging out at McDonalds.

However, if there is a Coffee Bean and a Starbucks next to each other, I'm definetly doing Coffee Bean.  I've never had a burned cup of coffee from them, while that is an occasional risk with Starbucks.  And even if they don't burn it, Coffee Bean has a smoother taste.

Who the fark still thinks Starbucks, a corporate chain more ubiquitous than McDonald's, is pretentious? That's like saying burger king is pretentious.

Never had dunkin donuts, but yeah, McDonald's is typically my back up. It's surprisingly good, but I don't like it as much as Starbucks.

Most gas stations around my area has the kind of coffee that can sit in a burner for two hours. That stuff is no good.

Kangaroo is a gas station on the south east.  Has great coffee and chili dogs.  With fresh kraut and onions and a machine that dispenses fresh chili.

I am not a huge coffee fan but as a card carrying Colombian with a family who has had coffee farms for close to 100 years I know good coffee, and those places have it.  Starbucks burns the roast and just makes it taste like ass.

Pumpkin Spice douchenozzle is currently the worst.

They say they are the King or royalty of burgers.  That sounds pretentious to me!

Damn.  That chili dog sounds good.

well my original point about Starbucks is it raised the game for coffee in a lot of parts of America.  If you think coffee is bad at Starbucks, back in the 80's and into the 90's (when I started drinking coffee) everything tasted like Folgers/Sanka or whatever gasoline station coffee, served in those styrofoam cups with powdered cream.   Awful.

their drip coffee is ok, that fancy clover stuff is better but pricy.

their drip coffee is also reliable and available almost anywhere.

so long as the above is true, they will still get my business when I travel. I prefer local coffee when I am at home.

Maybe I've just been unlucky, or the Starbucks I go to uses some magical fountain for their water, but I've never had a cup of DD/McD that comes close to Starbucks. Not sure about Kangaroo.

Agree that a good burr grinder, fresh bag of beans, and a Chemex or Aeropress will give the best results at a fraction of the cost.

I did just that (well, wife did it for me) and I couldn't be happier. Muuuuuuuuuuuch better than a Keurig, and much cheaper than getting coffee out.

Doesn't taste better than my usual spots in San Francisco, though. Fortunately, I don't have the opportunity to hit those too often.

McDonalds and Jack-in-the-Box have really good coffee. McDonalds used to taste like boiled nuts, but they must have switched to a better grind when they rebranded themselves as McCafe.

But you still have to buy quality beans, and that's easier said than done.  We've tried beans from six different coffee houses/roasters here in Atlanta.  Our current winner is in Marietta, and that means a 30+ minute trek, each way, just to buy decent beans.

This is the only reason I visit Starbucks at all (which isn't all that often, frankly).  I can surf the 'net, read a book, read the New York Times paper edition.  Their coffee sucks, so you have no choice but to buy some super sugary concoction that disguises the flavor of the coffee itself.

I dislike all coffee shops that think that they can charge over a dollar for a cup of coffee. QuikTrip, Racetrack, and even 7-Eleven offer fantastic coffee and more for a dollar.

Beating that, just fixing it at home is cheaper, and I can choose the flavoring (my fave is alcoholic in nature hehe). Considering that for the price of Starbucks cafe, I can get quite toasty.

My son works there so I get all the Starbucks I want for free, so I'm getting a kick and so on and so forth.
