The GOP is completely dependent on the "take over at the state level" strategy. And why not it has worked great so far.

Thing is, they want to be the lords at the state level as much as they perceive "libruls" to be lords at the federal level.  And if your state legislators and executives call Obama a tyrant...you may want to move.

They want to be little lords of their little domains.

I'm ready for the abolisment of state governments as anything other than administrators of federal policy.

I'm predicting... lawsuits, far more voter fraud in denying citizens the right to vote than it would prevent, and massive expenses to put this skeezy, unworkable plan both into effect and to shut it down. This is what my crystal ball tells me.

Oh, wait, pardon me. It's not a "crystal ball." It's "a recollection of history."

You misunderstand the use of the word tent. I always think of their tent as the traveling huckster evangelist's tent. There's plenty of room in the tent for god fearin' born again Christians.

"It's another veiled attempt at discouraging young voters, low-income voters, Latino voters from entering the electoral process,"

Nu-uh! Ever think that maybe Arizona and Kansas are only places in the US of A where True 'Murricun Patriots are actively fighting the nationwide scourge of massive, massive individual voter fraud*?

/*You know, the fraud that they know is out there despite never been proven to exist in anything resembling serious numbers much less election swinging territory.

Okay, on second thought maybe the original quote is more correct plus the whole "control it on a state level plus the House through gerrymandering" thing.

The above all dutifully and somewhat woefully noted, a hearty congratulations to the very happy couple Mr and Mrs SAW!

Well timed threadjack was well timed and appreciated. ^_^

I can't wait until they reveal their strategy for disenfranchising white voters who support minority equality. Not that I don't appreciate being ignored by them, but I'm genuinely curious as to how they're going to try and deal with us.

2013-10-12 03:18:25 PM
Well, if you can't convince those people to vote your way with your bigoted rhetoric and racist party members, I reckon you'll just have to keep'em from voting completely. Good job GOP. Just one more nail in your coffin. Keep playing on the wrong side of history.

Send in the national guard and unseat the state representatives and governors. Forcibly rewrite the state constitutions to bring them in line with the rest of the nation, then hold new elections, with all previous office holders barred from running.

Anyone who thinks the voter ID movement is a good idea is either a loser that can't win with good ideas and policy, racist, an asshole, a complete dipshiat that has been duped by the right wing entertainment complex, or some combination of the above.

This strategy bit them in the ass last election.  It just ends up pissing off minority voters and motivates them to vote even more.  So please proceed Republicans.

my son has worked the polls for a number of years - to date there is no report of massive numbers of illegals showing up without papers in order to throw the race for a council seat in our small town

If AZ is so paranoid to assume that illegals will turn out to swing a local election they are delus.....oh....right

Tom Horne spent years destorying education in Arizona, now as Attorney General he's going to try to destroy everything else. He'll be running for governor in the next election. That's why we're getting this ridiculous law.

2013-10-12 04:14:18 PM
OK, sure.

States can make whatever requirements they want for state residency for election purposes, so long as it doesn't violate existing federal law.  This can mean being more restrictive or more permissive, depending on the state, and it can get more or less specific another level down with local crap, too.

This... isn't really that new and revolutionary an idea, though the implementation in this case does seem to fall more into the "huge waste of time an money" category than anything really culturally meaningful.  It also seems like the kind of pointless meddling that's going to lose the GOP even more voters-- in a lot of places they're still coasting on the portion of their base that hasn't paid much attention and thinks they're still the party of small government.  Reminding everyone that they're even worse than the Dems on those grounds is... maybe not the best idea politically.

// Albeit, if disparate impact on a protected class can be proved, that  would violate federal law.  I don't think that's the case for just requiring more proof of citizenship, though, so long as you ask for documents pretty much any citizen can obtain in the time between informing everyone and the actual election.

Great idea.  If the farking poor people don't like it, we'll give them free identification........as long as they can prove they are US citizens!!!!  As evidence by the last two presidential elections, nobody under age 35 should be allowed to vote anyways.

Don't forget Ron Unz, who came from California and gave us English-only, then went to New Mexico and attempted the same thing, and was almost lynched.

You don't fark with Spanish in New Mexico. There are families who've been there for 400 years and still speak Spanish.

yup. and the plan then is to eliminate direct elections of senators and go back to the state legislatures picking senators.

one of the more derptastic attempted politicians from my state has openly admitted that is the plan. several times.

Now that's just plain dumb. New Mexico's only been a state for 101 years. Heck, the good ole U.S.ofA. has only been a country for 237 years, so how can there be families who've been there for 400 years? Sounds to me like you're trying to justify the lingering presence of a bunch of filthy squatters that ought to have gone back to Mexico when Jeebus gave the continent to freedom loving Christians.

That's pretty good. Good enough to win an election in Arizona, at least.
