(McClatchy DC)   Malala has brass ones. First she stood up to the Taliban, and she just personally told Obama that "drone attacks are fueling terrorism. Innocent victims are killed in these acts, and they lead to resentment among the Pakistani people"   (mcclatchydc.com) divider line 163

If she lives that long.

If there is anything I wish for that kid, it is to have a long life and die from natural causes when she's an old lady.  But being from the country she is, and going back to it, I fear that this may not happen.

Brass ones?

You mean the same shiat that half of America has been screaming about from the rooftops?

I dont know who is trying to make this girl into some sort of sage or hero, but telling people that want to kill you to get an education or saying that drone attacks fuel terrorism isn't all that profound or brave.  People need to get a sense of perspective and stop putting this girl up on a pedestal.  She's saying what the majority of Americans have been saying for years.

2013-10-12 01:15:13 PM

He knows. He just doesn't care.

The Obama administration is exploiting the situation manufactured by the Bush administration to expand our definition of warfare. We don't bother sending soldiers to kill others, and there's no need for assassins - not when you can field a drone and press a button, killing not just your target but the folks to whom Obama has referred as "collateral damage."

This is the new land mine - a bit more discriminate, but it still provides random death for a relatively inexpensive price, and it can be deployed just about anywhere. I can't wait for him to start constructing "flying crowbars" at this point, what with the tacit performance approval of drone assassination.

Yep - with the Taliban openly gloating over her not getting the Peace Prize, and stating that they'd really like to finish her off - she's going to be looking over her shoulder for the rest of her life.

And now she'll need to watch the sky as well, having insulted Obama.

Innocent victims are going to be killed whenever ANY actions are taken against the Taliban. THAT'S WHAT MAKES THEM TERRORISTS.

/how many innocents have been killed by the Taliban because Malala is speaking out against them?
//if the US has innocent blood on its hands for fighting the Taliban with drones, then Malala herself has ten times as much blood on hers for fighting them with words
///especially since her words do nothing to physically stop their slaughter of innocents, and her opposition to the use of the USA's full force actively encourages them to continue

Has anyone ever seen the Battle of Algiers?

I agree with her in principle, killing civilians with bombs from the air (vs bombs planted in the ground or bombs from RPGs) causes PR problems for the US.  By the way, anyone see her on the Daily Show, she is sweet, but her strategy in dealing with the Talibam seems too innocent.

The problem from the US government point of view is that some of the Northern tribes, maybe members of the Talibam, show hospitability to al qaeda.  Some of theses northern tribe/talibam members might bring al qaeda members home.

Al qaeda members also do things like plan bombing of embassies overseas, maybe on US soil.

The principle is this, al qaeda is organized like a triangle.  One top, he knows two people, and that flows down.  So only one member knows two other people, and they check in daily.

The lower body of the snake can be cut off and it can heal pretty simply, but cut off the head or near the head and it is harder for the snake to heal.  That is why when someone with VP status can be found, they get a bomb thrown from a predator drone.  If the news is to be believed this has been working.  The problem is the US government keep on blowing up innocent people too.

She wasn't shot because of her convictions. She was shot because of her father. He was the one who thought his daughter needed an education. Only because of him was she allowed to go school
As for the drones she's clueless on what she's talking about. They effectively kill America's enemies. That's all that matters. Nits make lice and who cares about foreigners getting killed. One American life is more important then a million of them

Unfortunately, the only candidates that would get any votes against him would continue the drone policy, and, in fact, likely expand it to Iran, in preparation for a full-out invasion.

I have to disagree with you. She was shot because the shooter has an ignorant, fearful, sick little murderous mind, egged on by a subculture that is equally sick, ignorant, and fearful. Suggesting that either she or her father were in any way at fault implies they're wrong for wanting her to exercise her right to be educated, and/or wrong for exercising their right to say so.

I would suspect that he cares deeply about his actions. I would also like to point out that the least bad option you have can sometimes still be a horrible option.

I remember the summer in the late 90s we hit those training camps in Afghanistan with a dozen Tomahawks. I remember Natalie Merchant whining on stage a Lilith Fair about how aweful and shameful our aggression was. Do you think she would have felt the same if she understood the threat? Do you think Clinton would have been even more aggressive had he known the price of not killing the AQ organization earlier? (I'm sure he would have moved mountains).

Further, these attacks are coordinated with the Pakistani government. Due to pride and regional posturing their government always acts appalled when ever we strike. Yet, for years the drones were based at their air fields. It would also be trivial for the Pakistanis to deny access to their airspace. These are not stealth drones. They are glorified general aviation craft that probably have their transponders turned on. It doesn't surprise you that not one has ever been shot down?

It is aweful that the family members of the targets often die with their evil patriarch. I am also very concerned that there is no end game.
