Jerry Ford served aboard the light carrier Monterey in 1943 and 1944.
Here he is playing baskeball in the ship's elevator. He's the guy jumping who's facing the camera.

Even the highest estimates are nothing compared to war spending.

And they don't even need another freaking aircraft carrier. Sunk billions into this just for something to do.

Jesus Christ. Leave the politics out of it, asshole. This is pretty cool stuff to watch and LEARN from. You have no clue what learning is. It's all politics.

I appreciate that they have to take it slow, and that it's entirely appropriate for Newport News Channel 3 to report that they've started the process of filling the dry dock.

That said, that was rather anticlimatic since they didn't even show the water getting to the boat. I'll wait for the time-lapse video.

If you can learn something from staring at a boat then you probably weren't very smart to begin with.

Why is the delivery date in 2016?

I understand that a carrier is an extremely sophisticated and complex weapon system but isn't that a little long? At that speed some system will be obsolete when she is done.

Actually, the ship will be christened the USS Ford F-150

This is just the launching.  ATM she is little more than a hull with a few huge systems inside that had to be built in as part of the ship.  "Every" other system is still yet to be installed, from major components like radars, right down to the stoves in the galley.  It's not actually impossible that some systems will be re-designed during this process and swapped out.  But right now she is just a large, very expensive, barge that couldn't sail across the harbor under her own steam.

Then it all has to be tested, and broken stuff fixed or re-designed.

2016 is only a couple years off, and her commissioning is tied to the retirement of an older carrier ( I forget which one).

Also keep in mind this thing will probably be in service for half a century.

2 more years to finish what is now pretty much an empty shell is really not that much.

He wasn't the basketball type, he played center and linebacker for the University of Michigan.  He was probably our most athletic president in the last 75 years.

Yeah, pretty horrible name, since the equivalent of falling down for a ship is sinking.

Oh, and it's just stupid.  We have WAY too many aircraft carriers as it is.

Sorry but why is this on fark?

Anywho.....

Gerald Ford: Say, Homer, do you like football?
Homer: Do I ever, Sir!
Gerald Ford: Do you like nachos?
Homer: Yes, Mr. Ford.
Gerald Ford: Well, why don't you come over and watch the game, and we'll have nachos? And then, some beer.
