Because the government cares more about you now, as do all of those groups that are here to tell you what is good for you, what to feed your kids and how to raise them.

Do not associate fast food with any thing good or else you may die one day

/No, they would never allow that there, because Allah hates pork, everyone knows it.  We American Godless heathens love it though.  MMMMM tasty McRib....bring it.

Today's parents don't need no liberal do-gooders encouraging their precious cargo to read. They'll teach them on their own, all bootstrappy, once they can be assed to do so.

I loved RIF day at school. Even though my parents bought me any book I wanted, and I was a member of the Weekly Reader Book Club, RIF day was still magical.

This being 21st Century America (or what is left of it) and without reading the article I am guessing the debate centers around:

1-The subject matter of the books is not diverse enough:not enough gays, women in positions of authority , gay marriage, abortion and too much violence, depictions of kids playing without safety equipment, too much God.

2. Too diverse-too much gays, feminism, abortion etc and not enough Guns, non-regulated youthful play, God.

3. Just another corporate evil plot to get your kids to eat allegedly unhealthy food. No good ever came from a corporate activity. Teaching kids to read should be left to government.

4 Print is an outmoded medium MacDonalds should be giving everybody free e-readers.

5. Kids should not be reading they should be exercising after a happy meal

I understand their point. McDonalds is evil therefore we shouldn't help them advertise. Its like giving flu shots at Walmart. But at some point you have to acknowledge that the battle to uterly destroy the largest companies in the world is not going your way, and there may be more important things to worry about. But the don't call them ideologues for nothing.

Because this won't get far without someone decrying the book selection as morally unhealthy and replacing it with Atlas Shrugged.

Well, if you take the following into account:

 - average intelligence of a parent that would feed this crap to their children.

 - average intelligence of a child raised by said parents.

They'll probably just eat the book. With extra salt and ketchup.

All wrong. Here is what TFA said:
Critics said that by associating reading with fast food, it's tricking parents into thinking that McDonald's has the kids' best interests in mind. They said McDonald's is trying to ingratiate itself to parents with the books.

Ah yes, that naive group of parents who are smart enough to have their children read a book rather than play with some crappy little bit of plastic, yet are too ignorant to realize stuffing their children's faces with McDonald's is unhealthy.

Sadly, that image isn't too far off the mark. After 9/11, most Americans headed to Borders and Barnes and Noble to educate themselves on Islam and terrorism and what we may have done to provoke the attacks.

A few weeks after that it was all "books, what stinking books?" "Shock and Awe!" Cue the crying eagles and flags flying from the back windows of every car door.

Now Borders only exists online and even I haven't stepped into a Barnes and Noble in years. I get most of my stuff from Amazon or Ebay.

But that image brought it all back for just a second - how Americans were on the right path of trying to understand before we let slip the dogs of war.
