HuckinFappy: rooftop235: "...need to put the river back in its original channel" ????Why not build around the new area???Subby here...Well to be specific, we need a channel for it to be in. The town was hit by two things: a massive amount of rain, which caused the river to rise and flood. The rains also caused the mountain on one side of the valley to completely slide....it burned in a wildfire in 2003 and has never recovered enough. The tons of debris that slid down that mountain (in 6 separate slides) ran into town, crushing a house and killing one. The debris was then washed into the river, causing damming which brought the water levels many feet above what had been considered the 100 year flood level. So back to your point...the valley floor, which used to have a neat road, a lovely stream, and cute old houses, has been decimated by the river. it carved new channels, went crazy, and moved many times during the storm. Now that the water levels have dropped, the valley floor is just sand, mud, and rock, with the water just flowing all over it. It's going to take the Army Corp of Engineers to figure out how we move things around to once again have a stream and land to build on.The river itself never would have caused the damage we're dealing with. The channel was so deep, and the levels so low in comparison, it would be almost impossible for it to cause this sort of flooding if there wasn't the blockages brought on by the slides.I don't post much, but I'm not new around here...I expect the "Well move, you idiots" posts. We all live with certain risks: blizzards, floods, tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes. We drew the short straw this time, that's all.
