He would deserve a Nobel Peace prize IF...

1) When the country defaults, he declares a state of emergency
2) He arrests half the Republican party and publicly tries them for treason.

The theory was that he negotiated a peace treaty with North Vietnam. After bombing the fark out of Laos, Cambodia, and of course Noth Vietnam. A true humanitarian. And then North Vietnam won anyway. See? It all makes sense.

Thread over, everyone go home.  What Obama should have done is thank the committee for the honor, but decline to accept it.  That would have made him look both magnanimous and gracious.

I thought it was changed to Lesus yesterday. It's challenging to keep up with all the change in the church these days.

Putin would probably refuse the NPP becuz Obama has one. Irrespective of that hypothesis, the craftily-timed intersession of Putin into the Syrian "crisis" created an escape-hatch for Obama, who misjudged American antipathy for yet another incursion into the Arab world. Putin was perceived as the peacemaker, and Obama suffered another foreign policy black eye.

Didn't this whole chemical weapons destruction thing start with some reporter asking John Kerry what Syria could do to avoid an attack, and he said, off the cuff, give up all the weapons for destruction? The story in my head is of an arrogant, overstretched nation accidentally falling into the solution they should have pursued in the first place. Obama didn't deserve the 1st one for sure. And unless someone convinces me otherwise, that reporter deserves it more than Obama.

I'm glad he won the first one. The pure butthurt and anger it caused right wingers was glorious. I have no idea how many times I said only in America would people get visibly angry because the leader of their nation won a Nobel prize

2013-10-11 09:35:53 PM
I like to think that Obama's Nobel was basically given to America as a whole, as a way of recognizing the country was looking for a change of pace after eight years of Bush.  If any other Democratic candidate won that election, they probably would have gotten the prize as well.

He obviously didn't deserve the first one.  That was the Nobel committee thanking the American public for not electing another farkwad like Bush.

But OMG would I love to see the right wing blogosphere if he got another one.  It would be SO worth it.  Better still would be if the Nobel folks came out and said "We've started another prize, the Nobel Prize for Politics.  First awardee -- Barack Obama".  Swear to god I'd farking come right there, right then.

b0rscht: Obama didn't deserve the 1st one for sure.

Alright, look, this may be hard to recognise from inside the United States, but I think you might have missed the significance of Barack Obama being elected. The rest of the world that pays attention to the USA - that is all of us - watched as the global superpower with all the nukes and a pretty big army went and started a fight in Afghanistan (excessive but understandable) then started a fight with Iraq (huh?) and started more of a fight in Pakistan (!!!?) and was eyeing Syria and Iran, while its economy was crumbling, in a way that would impact everyone. Wars that were older than the students now learning about the countries in question in school were going on when the USA changed hands.

Barack Obama turns up promising to stop those wars and step down the militarism, and gets elected. That is, Barack Obama, just by getting elected, expressed the ability of a nation that had been in a state of non-stop war for a near-decade to stop, to stabilise, and maybe stop being such a gigantic asshole to the rest of the world.

Sure, the Peace Prize doesn't mean that much since suckholes like Kissinger have it. And yes, Obama did not turn out to be as anti-war, as pro-peace as he should have been to deserve the medal in hindsight, because of things he did after he farking won it. But if you want to know why he got it, he did seemingly turn up to muzzle the biggest, nastiest dog in human history.

2013-10-11 09:56:29 PM
Gosh, I hope he does.

I think you misread me... I was just teasing fecking, who seems like an ok guy other than the right-winginess. I agree that the Nobel was more of a Thank You For Not Being Bush award. But I am DEFINITELY not a BSABSVR guy.

QFT

Also, should Obama get credit here? He was hawking a military intervention that was too much for even the Republicans, and the diplomatic solution that wound up working came from a moment of frustration when John Kerry was speaking to the press. Putin jumped on it to make the US look foolish -- "see, you guys treated this like an impossibility, but we can make it happen."

That's hardly the stuff Nobel Peace Prizes should be made of. Give it to the Pakistani girl.

Yeah, this article is a little over the top.

Did Obama provide the push that got other people to do something about Syria's chemical weapons?  Sure, he was a part of it.

secularsage: ..He was hawking a military intervention that was too much for even the Republicans...

Dude, that's nonsense. They opposed it because it's all they've got: hating Obama and not wanting to give him ANYTHING. If Obama came out against taking a hammer and smashing your own balls into a red paste, there wouldn't be be any Republican children for a generation.
