I got to go to Game 2 that year, the Dodgers got to Andujar early.  They went to St. Louis up 2-0 and obviously I was feeling pretty good about it.  I was working in an office when Jack Clark hit that home run.  Everyone had a radio on... I was in a closed-door meeting and could hear the staff around the office suddenly let out ghastly shrieks, and I knew it wasn't good.

It's a great rivalry, looking forward to a fun series.  The Dodgers are comfortable on the road, and I like not seeing Wainwright until Game 3 in LA.  If that ends up being important, I'll be grateful to the Pirates for going 5 with the Cards.

There is a huge disparity in payroll. There is a certain elegance and efficiency associated with lower costs achieving similar results. Arguably the Cardinals are a more efficient baseball organization.

I am super torn here - on the one hand, my friend who is a Pittsburgh fan wants the Cardinals to win so he could say it took the best team to beat his, and I endorse that sentiment.  On the other hand, Don Mattingly is good people, and I want him to succeed.  I also have love for the Cardinals, because Freese and Beltran helped me win my fantasy league last year, and I also have hate for the Dodgers for helping Boston by taking all those bad contracts off their hands.

I guess the Cardinals have it.

I had Hanley, Kershaw, Ryu, Jensen, and Kemp this year, but I still hate the Dodgers, and I want to see them lose.  To be fair, it's a keeper league, and I traded for Kemp in August.

I just realized I'll be keeping three Dodgers next year.  I feel dirty.  That's almost like keeping three Yankees.

Ohhh fantasy teams - that'll break the tie for me. I traded for Allen Craig early in the year and he helped a lot. But he farked me by getting hurt during the playoffs. I don't think I had any Dodgers on my team. GOD DAMN IT! IT'S STILL A PUSH!!!

I've had a few sporadic issues with TBS on Comcast in the Baltimore area throughout the playoffs. Amazingly, it's the least annoying thing about their coverage

It's still the same base problem though.  With baseball (especially covering games with the Cards) his monotone is understandable to avoid homerism.  He just doesn't have the ability to really bring out the emotion in a game.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: vegaswench: This umpire is all over the place tonight.

Agreed.  Lots of copious movement of the corners.....but that part has to stay in baseball.  If you take balls and strikes away from the umps, its not the same game.

Sure, but consistency would be nice.

Ah, dammit.

The Bestest: ..that's not to say i think Buck is the worst in the world. I'd take 20 Joe Bucks over 1 Hawk Harrelson.

Oh that's a tough call.  I guess I hate them both equally but for different reasons.  In fact, it wouldn't be outrageous to say that they are complete opposites.

Samuel Beale's Ghost: NetOwl: Don Mattingly is good people

Why the fark do people talk like this?

Maybe for the same reason anybody says anything: they heard somebody say it, liked the cut of its jib and picked it up for themselves.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: Mark Ratner: Joe Buck isn't that bad at all. His haters are just more vocal than the people who think he's good. Haters gonna hate.

And I do agree, he is not that bad.  But he's not Vin. End of discussion.

Well duh. Vin Scully is the greatest of all time. Jack Buck is #2.

Okay, Greinke, let's go.  1-2-3 inning here.

I just want four Dodgers wins.  If you don't mind the Cardinals having one, two or three wins, I think you and me can get along. =^-^=

You are generous, I prefer cards win it, of course, but I'm not gonna biatch if we loose it after going the distance.

Yup.  Culture victory one turn before she completed her tech victory.  Got her hooked when she was on super bed rest during pregnancy, so we do a lot of hot seat games.
She also tried SFIV for the first time (first of any SF) and said she enjoyed it way more than her pacifistic, non-action-gaming self thought.

Well, St. Louis really only has Seigrist left who is their closer. They don't want to burn him without the lead. LA still has Marmol and Volquez who can give you an inning fairly easily, plus one more.

The home team will never pitch with the lead in extra innings so they don't need to save anyone for anything

I bet Fox is praying that Boston beats Detroit.  Nothing kills ratings like having one team being from an uninhabited city.  They already did avoid the worst-case scenario of Oakland versus Pittsburgh, though.

This cartoon was cute, even though it makes fun of my Dodgers:

The great thing about a seven-game series is that it doesn't have to hinge on a lucky win.  The Dodgers will have plenty of chances to avenge this loss--in LA, even!

Agreed on the Beltran throw.  The dropped fly ball that allowed Beltran to knock in two rbi's was more important.

Uh huh.  Has nothing to do with the gazillion guys the Dodgers left on base, or the poor decision by Mattingly to pull A-Gon.

I think replacing Pujols with Beltran just might work out for St. Louis.

Not very sportsman like.but baseball is about endurance and recovery. St. Louis p made a mistake that gave you two runs. The tag was good, for a number of reasons... Mainly because the base was far away- ball made it first... And he pushed the catchers arm away from him!

Regardless of the fact that the glove did indeed touch him, please show me the MLB rule that states the glove has to touch the runner for them to be out. He was tagged out as the entire arm holding the ball touched the runner.

But did you catch the numerous replays where the ump gave the Dodgers that slut-vagina of a strike zone? Lol that was soooooo bad. But as you can see with the above pic, your boy was out. No question now.

Rule 7.08 Any runner is out when-- (c) he is tagged, when the ball is alive, while off his base.

And a "tag" is defined in Rule 2.00 as follows:

A TAG is the action of a fielder in touching a base with his body while holding the ball securely and firmly in his hand or glove; or touching a runner with the ball, or with his hand or glove holding the ball, while holding the ball securely and firmly in his hand or glove. (emphasis mine)

It's abundantly clear from what mlb.com posted of this play that the tag was never made.

Molina turned away like a little biatch instead of making the tag.

A video is worth a thousand pictures, especially when you can look at multiple angles to reconstruct the moment-by-moment action.  From what I've seen, Ellis's elbow might--might--have brushed Molina's glove, but it's hardly cut and dry in favor of the Cardinals.  Not that I have a problem with calling it an out; if the only way to avoid the tag is by ramming the guy with the ball, you don't deserve the base.

so?

There is a huge disparity in payroll. There is a certain elegance and efficiency associated with lower costs achieving similar results. Arguably the Cardinals are a more efficient baseball organization.

The way baseball structures its contracts, with younger players who are amazingly productive getting the shaft, is what allows some teams to do very well with a low payroll.  You shaft enough young guys, you can be very successful with a small payroll.

Matt Carpenter, Matt Adams, Shelby Miller, Lance Lynn, and John Jay making a COMBINED $2.5 million this year?

I would hardly say getting paid $500k a year to play baseball when you're in your early twenties is "getting the shaft."  Let alone that whole championship ring thing.

Your point? If that call was made the right way, the scoreboard would have looked differently.

Tell me, if that play is happening at second base on an attempted stolen base and the short stop or second basemen doesn't touch the runner with the glove, that runner would be safe, right? How is the play at home any different? I don't care if that type of play is called out 9 times out of 10 based on the ball beating the runner. The tag has to be applied or the catcher can just lay his leg across homeplate and catch the ball from anywhere. Body contact is not tagging the runner. Simple as that.

You mean like in a double play, when the ump calls the guy out if the 2B or SS is anywhere close to the bag?

I see your point, but I'm talking about a non-force play where a tag is required, actually touching the runner with the glove while in control of the ball. That phantom tag shiat shouldn't even be in a playofff game.
