How horrific. There is no punishment severe enough to make the person who did this pay. I think they should put him in a room with the entire team for half an hour and let them handle it as it should be handled.

As much as I don't normally like this, I hope in this case, assuming the kid lives (and I certainly hope he does!), the prosecutor throws every single thing possible at him.  Child abuse, attempted murder, maybe he was illegally parked at the time, throw this piece of shiat away, he is of no use to society whatsoever.

We're told the family is monitoring the situation closely, and if there is no improvement in 24 hours, the mother wants to remove life support and donate the boy's organs to people in need.

"I've made a smooth transition into adulthood. As even you've witnessed in the last few years," says Rock. "I'm a man. I'm going to be 40 years old. That's old."
"That's not old," says Bradley.
"OK. Here's how old 40 is. Forty is so old the only time I will ever be referred to as young again for the rest of my life is if I die at 40, or if I start sleeping with Cher," says Rock. "OK? Young man sleeping with Cher. Cher's got another young one. He's dead and he's 40, so young."

As someone who's nephew is severely handicapped from being shaken by his father (who did indeed end up in prison) - I can't accurately state what a horrific thing it is to sit and wait to see if a child is going to die.

Sure they do, but not for the same reasons.  A state of impoverishment isn't typically something a person can control, so that ought to be a factor in deciding whether or not this individual should be charged with a crime.

It's conceivable that he could get the death penalty.  I'm not familiar with SD law, but there are going to be pretty much nothing but aggravating circumstances here.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, South Dakota requires at least one of the following ten aggravating circumstances:

South Dakota-
(1)The murder was especially heinous, atrocious, cruel or depraved (or involved torture)
(2) The capital offense was committed during the commission of, attempt of, or escape from a specified felony (such as robbery, kidnapping, rape, sodomy, arson, oral copulation, train wrecking, carjacking, criminal gang activity, drug dealing, or aircraft piracy)
(3) The defendant knowingly created a grave risk of death for one or more persons in addition to the victim of the offense
(4) The murder was committed for pecuniary gain or pursuant to an agreement that the defendant would receive something of value
(5) The defendant caused or directed another to commit murder, or the defendant procured the commission of the offense by payment, promise of payment, or anything of pecuniary value
(6) The murder was committed to avoid or prevent arrest, to effect an escape, or to conceal the commission of a crime
(7) The defendant has been convicted of, or committed, a prior murder, a felony involving violence, or other serious felony
(8) The capital offense was committed by a person who is incarcerated, has escaped, is on probation, is in jail, or is under a sentence of imprisonment
(9)Any murder is wantonly vile, horrible, and inhuman is the victim is less than 13 years of age
(10) The victim was a government employee, including peace officers, police officers, federal agents, firefighters, judges, jurors, defense attorneys, and prosecutors, in the course of his or her duties
(11)The person murders a peace officer or fireman who is acting in the lawful discharge of an official duty and who the person knows is a peace officers or fireman
(12)The victim was a correctional officer

#9 clearly applies, and #1 likely does as well.

Not always. I'm spending the afternoon alone with my stepdaughter's two year old kid. The most danger he faced was when we went to the museum to see dinosaurs.

That boy is the light of my llfe, and vice versa. When I went to pick him up I asked my stepdaughter if she was sure she didn't want him for the day, and she answered, "Nah, its ok. He likes you better than me anyway."

We can sit here all day & question which of our social ills led to this situation. The truth is, we don't know enough about this guy to speculate what led him to beat a baby. GoldSpider: INeedAName: Wow. You're an idiot.

So you don't think being chronically poor/unemployed puts a strain on one's psyche?

Ahh, the old misdirection ploy.

You make statement X, I point out that statement X is stupid, and then you try and point out how statement X possibly factors into Y, which may or may not have had an impact on Z.

You argue like a 5 yr old.  Seriously, only at that age would a blanket statement like 'blame poverty' be remotely acceptable. Meanwhile, the adults in the room realize that life is vastly more complex that such simplistic statements and can indeed understand that such behaviors happen all along the income spectrum.

Absolutely - a person's psyche can effect their actions. And sometimes it doesn't. And being poor can be a strain, but sometimes it isn't. Being fat, bald, stupid, tall, one-legged, rich, handsome, blind, etc... all such factors CAN play into your psyche, but unlike Rogaine commercials, I don't go around telling bald people how unhappy they should be because it effects your psyche.

Furthermore, regardless of the state of your psyche, a person is responsible for their actions. Always. You may have a load of shiat in your past, and that really sucks, and I understand how it can effect you, but the only person who chose to beat that child to death, was the person who did. So instead of blaming poverty, why don't we just blame the perpetrator of the crime and move on with our lives.

Or would you prefer to spend more time wallowing in your ignorance?

Gulper Eel: Why the hell there isn't a domestic violence registry like there is for sex offenders is beyond me.

Naw. We'd be better off spending the same money on social services, addiction and community mental health. That is if we want to actually decrease the number of instances of this happening rather than just make another list...that would ultimately become so long as to be relatively useless. Example - see current sex offender  public urinator, 19 year old dude with 16 year old girlfriend - farked up jerk who is no danger to anyone outside his own family - list and the burgeoning TSA no-fly list that has freakin' babies on it. What the fark is it with this country that we think big problems get solved with a freakin' list? Besides, there's already a list. Assault is a felony crime and a $17 background check will reveal that information as well as any other troublesome details for which said person has been adjudicated for. Ta-da - now we can spend all that silly list money on things that might actually lead to less of the thing we want to put people on a list for.

Regardless of what Peterson did (or didn't) do for that boy, there's no excuse for what happened.

Strap this child murderer to a chair the middle of the Astrodome with Peterson and anyone who wants a shot, let them have an hour or two to do whatever the hell they want, then empty the Astrodome except for the murderer, strap a bunch of C-4 to the murderer and the dome, and blow that thing to the ground.  Maybe the body gets recovered in the rubble, maybe it doesn't.

Come to think of it, maybe not.  It would be too much of an insult to the Astrodome.  Maybe just strap some C-4 to him and blow him up in the middle of Minneapolis.

I'm not even an Internet GED lawyer, but going by what I read on the South Dakota Legislature's website and Wikipedia, this qualifies as Murder in the Second Degree, not First*. The latter is pre-meditated or includes arson, rape, robbery, burglary, kidnapping, or unlawful throwing, placing, or discharging of a destructive device or explosive. This doesn't.

If he has the best lawyer ever, he may get it talked down to Manslaughter. I'd say it's unlikely, unless the case looks weak for some reason.

If he gets second degree, his penalty is mandatory life without parole.

*Will I be filter-powned?

I mean, this thread is full of people who are upset irrationally at the mother while offering condolences to a guy that barely even knew the child existed. I can definitely empathize with it being horrible if he actually had a relationship with this child, but I hardly feel like he's the person most in need of support right now related to this situation. And we have people in here demanding that the person who probably DOES need the most support get punished, with the insinuation that they deserve jail time.

/the mom should get to be the one to take it out on the person who killed her kid with no legal repercussions

To be fair, among species that exhibit sexual dimorphism, infanticide is a viable method of ensuring the passage of your genetic material.  A woman that is nursing with the child of another man will fail to ovulate because of inhibitory hormones produced by lactation.  Only by killing the nursing children will the mother cease to feed and again become sexually active, allowing the new male to reproduce.

That being said we're not mountain gorillas and I hope something gets stuck in that man's urethra.

I would guess it's because Iamright is a Seahawks fan and not a Packer fan but more importantly, he is going on the fact that AP never admitted/claim the child to be his own. I would think AP has some cash in the cushions of his couch and could afford a DNA test, but I might be wrong?

His dad is the only one that has confirmed that it is his child. AP is looking forward to his game Sunday. At least that was the report before they announced the child had passed away.

On the surface, sounds like he didn't have a lot of interaction with the child.

JohnBigBootay: Gulper Eel: Why the hell there isn't a domestic violence registry like there is for sex offenders is beyond me.

You forgot the "sex offender" who was a 15 year old that went streaking during a high school football game and then he hung himself rather than live with the label.

JohnBigBootay: We'd be better off spending the same money on social services, addiction and community mental health throwing good money after bad

Fixed, unfortunately.

If spending scads of money solved anything, my home state of New York would be paradise. Our per-pupil spending is second to none; our Medicaid budget, the nation's largest by far and almost as large as the next two state Medicaid programs combined. And there is a huge social services infrastructure, which does a splendid job working and advocating on behalf of...the social services infrastructure.

Actually helping people with serious needs with anything other than getting them to the polls every other November is a secondary consideration.

New York's not above overbilling Medicaid by billions, telling Washington the money's for the profoundly developmentally disabled and then spending it on more immediate political needs.

JohnBigBootay: What the fark is it with this country that we think big problems get solved with a freakin' list? Besides, there's already a list. Assault is a felony crime and a $17 background check will reveal that information as well as any other troublesome details for which said person has been adjudicated for.

So since these are already government records, it shouldn't cost them 17 bucks a pop to make the right ones publicly searchable by anybody meeting somebody new.

Not foolproof by any means - but if anything in this world is a deterrent to violence, it's the prospect of never scoring a decent piece of ass ever again.

Vectron: Patterson was dating the child's mother and was the only one home with the boy Wednesday when the abuse is alleged to have taken place.

Patterson called 911 around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday to report the boy was choking at their Platinum Valley apartment. But Lt. Blaine Larsen of the Sioux Falls Police Department said it became clear at the hospital that the boy's injuries were not accidental.

Larsen said the relationship between the mother and Patterson was "fairly new."

Patterson has a son with another Sioux Falls woman, court records show. Records also show that the mother of his child had asked for protection orders twice, claiming he'd choked and punched her, threatened her with a knife and held her in the bedroom against her will.

The top group of sole child abusers is the mother at 40.8% (vs 18.8% of sole abusers being the father and 16.9% of abusers being both the father and mother together).  I'll let you interpret that as you wish.

Flab: Rhames: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand he's dead.

He's been dead for 24 hrs.  They just decided to pull the plug now.  As said above, kudos to the family to donate the organs.  It's nice that in a rough time like this, they can still have a thought for other needy families.

Thanks for the puppies.  I just posted an edict on my fantasy league site that anybody who picks up Toby Gearhart in the next 48 hours will burn in hell forever.

I wouldn't have thought of that.... Then again, I've got Sproles and Pierre Thomas against a less than good Patriot defense, so it's not like I need to give one of them up for a week.

\though if this was a WR we were talking about....

Sure they do, but not for the same reasons.  A state of impoverishment isn't typically something a person can control, so that ought to be a factor in deciding whether or not this individual should be charged with a crime.

Of all the things in your life, poverty is one of those over which you exercise substantial, even sole, control.

Ah, my bad. Didn't realize he had two sons. Wiki page said he had a son and a daughter.

That may page need to be updated more often.

Actually, that this was Peterson's child was not public knowledge until this tragedy happened, from everything that I've read.

Nabb1: How horrific. There is no punishment severe enough to make the person who did this pay. I think they should put him in a room with the entire team for half an hour and let them handle it as it should be handled.

THIS

Although my semi-legal alternative would be to skip right to the execution phase, and re-route every volt of electricity reserved for the Metrodome to the chair.

That's too good for him. Put him in a locked room with AD for four minutes.

I'd say losing your child is a pretty big punishment.

/gosh, guys, won't people think about poor AP and how upset he must be about losing the kid he abandoned?

How did he abandon the kid? If the mother doesn't want to be with him and leaves what is he supposed to do, tie her up and force her to stay?

My guess? Dumb fark Packer fan looking for any opportunity he can to take shots at Peterson and Minnesota in general. Because that's appropriate at a time like this.

Sad no matter how you look at it.

Dude has posters of Aaron Rodgers in Speedos on his wall. You do the math.

Are there posters of Aaron Rodgers like that or did he take a poster of some guy in Speedos and put a picture of Rodger's face on it? Because that would be even worse.

Gwendolyn: JohnBigBootay: Gulper Eel: Why the hell there isn't a domestic violence registry like there is for sex offenders is beyond me.

You forgot the "sex offender" who was a 15 year old that went streaking during a high school football game and then he hung himself rather than live with the label.

That was here. The assistant principal was the dick who went to the media calling for the kid to be on the sex offender list. I recommend the thread on that other site/r/huntsvillealabama

Yeah, call me old fashioned, but I draw the line at dying(dead)babies. I have a two year old son and I'm a first time father as well, this sh*t ruined my day when I heard it and will probably continue to ruin the rest of my week. I'm going to make sure I hug my son a bit longer from now on (probably to his chagrin since he gets too many anyways, seriously, I love my son so much. News like this really stings to the utter core)

why? i'm not trying to be an ass, but kids die every day, why do people care so much if they hear about one particular death related to someone famous?  hug your kids everyday regardless of the fact that hundreds of kids are dying that day.

What kind of piece of shiat does this to a 2 year old kid!!?  Mother is part to blame too.  Selfish to surround your 2 year old with garbage like this just for your  own personal needs.  Didn't need money from him.

i am not against the idea of spanking or even physically disciplining children in general.  i don't think that spanking is a bad thing by itself.  however, i am very much against it in practice because most adults do not know their own strength, and what they feel is a reasonable punch or slap to make a kid get in line could very well result in a concussion or broken bones.  hitting a kid is not like hitting an adult.  many of these situations involve an adult who simply cannot control their temper, so they punch the kid, not realizing how much damage a punch can really do.  in theory, physical discipline might be okay, but in practice, it almost always results in physical abuse and sometimes death.  i would bet many of the people who kill children this way grew up with and believe in physical discipline, and they never realize that a simple punch could crack a kid's skull or cause serious internal bleeding.

yes, folks, you just read that punching a child is perfectly "reasonable," behavior as long as one can control their temper.  im curious, can you tell me how many children you have so i can call CPS?

my argument:  nobody should hit their kids because kids are weak and adults don't know their own strength.
your rebuttal:  this guy thinks you should hit your kids!

GoldSpider: INeedAName: Wow. You're an idiot.

So you don't think being chronically poor/unemployed puts a strain on one's psyche?

It does, but it has a limit. Poverty means you might kill a man for a loaf of bread, but it didn't mean you'll beat a kid to brain-death just because.

JohnBigBootay: NightOwl2255: I know there's nothing he can do at this point, but how the hell do you play a game two days after your 2 year old kid dies? How could you concentrate on playing football?

I couldn't concentrate. But knowing myself I'm pretty freakin' sure I'd come to work and be useless anyway. I think there's plenty of people who prefer to fall back on routine and familiar surroundings to deal with tragedy.

When my mother died a few years ago, I was at work the next day. I don't have the best relationship with my parents, but you don't take the idea that you are halfway an orphan well. I found that working helped provide a feeling of stability, and it was a distraction by itself.
