I think that's probably the case.  Looking up the LD50 on caffeine in humans, it seems to be around 100-150mg per kg.  That's an order of magnitude above even heavy use.

Bout the only reason I can even move under my own power some days.

The LD50 charts have always cracked me up, especially LSD.  It first seems kinda dangerous being placed next to nicotine.  People dont realize how many doses of acid that actually is though.  To kill one human with acid you could also make a small town trip for days.

4 GBP for a pack of 12... and each one has 80 mg of caffeine.  Let's guess his weight at 170, that's 77 kg.  To hit the LD50, he would need 7.7 grams of caffeine, that's 96 mints, or 8 packs, all eaten rapidly to keep the caffeine level high.  Crazy.

Nope, nope, NOPE.  Dude had twice the daily recommended limit of caffeine in his system.  Considering that the daily recommended limit of caffeine is 400mg/day, which is equivalent to about 3 cups of coffee, I call BULLCRAP on the coroner.  Dude had a liver condition, don't blame his pack of farking breathmints.

It's somewhat possible, but highly unlikely.  What's much more likely is that his liver was already failing and a single pack is what put him out.

I did that once too. Not as a dare, but because I was always on a diet. I was at school, too. Had to run out of class and puked all over the bathroom. Felt terrible for a long time. I have never ODed on caffeine again. That shiat makes my teeth chatter if I have too much.

It's shiate like this that makes me realize that no matter how smart my kid is, and how many things I teach him, he's going to try to kill himself at some point.

As a teenager (15?) a buddy and I once tried to get speedy by eating massive doses of caffeine pills (Vivarin, IIRC). Nothing horrible happened to us, though it wasn't much fun. He made himself throw up when he started trembling and was fine, he even got to sleep after a few hours of reading.

But I couldn't puke, couldn't sit still and couldn't wait several hours for it to wear off, so I headed to the Emergency Room where they gave me IV fluids, fed me activated charcoal and perhaps a Valium, for which I'm still grateful. Not a big deal.

Except that while I was lying there twitching they grilled me on why I'd tried to kill myself. I was flabbergasted: in the first place though I didn't know what a fatal dose of caffeine was that was obviously far short of it, and if suicide was on my mind I'd be using "downers" of some kind. I can't recall laughing in anybody's face but I do remember telling them several times that trying to die by caffeine was so obviously idiotic that their accusation was insulting.

Still they didn't want to let me go till my father got sharp with them. Something like "My son is not THAT stupid: if he wanted to kill himself he'd find a way that would work."

Death by caffeine OD? What a horrible way to go. Poor dumb farker.

Something like that. Also makes me wonder if the "pre-existing liver condition" had anything to do with already having processed a lifetime's worth of alcohol and other toxins.

2013-10-11 01:51:57 PM
I read somewhere recently that the OD limit for caffeine is right at 100 cups of coffee. Quickened Fry scoffs and orders another cup.

The boss gave out boxes of these mocha candies and I munched down a whole box sitting at my desk. If I'd had a heart condition it might have been really bad. Being from the NW having a little extra caffeine in my system wasn't unusual, still isn't.

Well, some people don't realize how low the active dosage for LSD is compared to other psychoactive substances.  Besides fentanyl and a few more recent "research chemicals" (nbome, DOC, bromo, etc) I can't think of anything else active in the microgram range.

Lightweight. In Spring of '96 I had a regular routine: my usual 2 packs of cigarettes a day, huge mugs of coffee, Albuterol and Primatene Mist (the latter being epinephrine), Primatene pills (ephedrine), my usual Zoloft, and sometimes Ritalin swiped from the guy who was sharing his woman with me. I was wide awake, very alert, and usually in a wonderful mood unless somebody did something mean or stupid.

These days I'd probably convulse and have a stroke or something. It's hell being old.

A liver condition doesn't just cause you to drop dead, not under any circumstances.

Even you do something that causes your liver to stop functioning completely, death is still gradual. There's a rapid increase in illness, confusion, eventual coma and then death. Something that takes days.

My bet is a heart attack.

Wow.  I suck down a lot of coffee and diet soda with caff, but nothing like that - whee!

And I get buzzed on a 5-hour energy - so I use them very sparingly.

I know where I can buy reagent grade caffiene and it comes with a warning not to ingest it due to the relatively low toxic doses.

5 hour energy is just a massive dose of B vitamins.

It DOES work, but you need to keep yourself fed with calories to burn or it can't do jack shiat.
