TheTurtle: Pocket Ninja: I've actually been swayed by this group's goals, and I've decided to help participate in clogging the beltway today. I'm organizing like-minded drivers -- you don't have to have a truck, any car will do -- and we're going to block the northbound stretch of 495 going up form Tyson's Corner and around the spur toward Bethesda. Plan on being in that area around 3:30; it'll be epic. Don't forget to honk your horn for solidarity.

And I'll take care of outbound 66 near Nutley! Maybe one of my buddies can wreck his shiatbox into the jersey wall like he does every Friday anyway...

I'll handle 28 North between the Toll Road and the Ashburn left exit at about 4:15. With any luck, we'll be able to shut down the Metro region all at once!

foxyshadis: DC infrastructure is more like San Francisco's, woefully underbuilt and the same problems with day commuters, only with several times the people.

Do they also have the issue where all the poor people live 30-40 miles (or more.  Roommate has a couple of coworkers from Fairfield working in Mountain View) from work and there's no mass transit connecting one part of the region (East Bay/ Central Valley) to the part where the jobs are (Silicon Valley), so everyone comes down over the same 2 mountain passes to go into the same 2 bridges (Combined total lanes in each direction: 6), and that backs up for AGES.

/Look, if you have major congestion issues in the mountain pass, you need to add more lanes or more mass transit.  There's no feasible way to go around.  At least in Michigan, when 696 backed up, I could say "Screw it" and get on 12 mile.  And when 12 mile backed up, I could say screw it and get on 13 mile, and when 13 mile was blocked up (very rare.  It was usually at least LOS B or C), I could duck down and get on 10 mile or 9 mile.  Very nice grid, lots of alternate routes and side roads.  Mountain passes and bridges screw that all up, and you need to build for that.

Fun fact:

Ray Stevens, *other* novelty song writer of the '70's, the guy who wrote "The Streak" and "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival..."

He now writes very forced Teabaggie-themed novelty songs. It is so very sad.

Here in about a half an hour, I'll take 66E from US15 to the Beltway, then 495S from 66 to Gallows Rd!

I'm rooting for the Truckers For the Constitution who want to drop Congressional salaries to the minimum wage until a budget is passed, ignoring the 27th amendment.

The Slush: mbillips: I lived in DC twice over the past five years, for eight months each time (working on the inauguration). I solved the traffic problem pretty easily. Rented an apartment in Capitol Hill, left my car parked, and rode a bicycle. On Mass Ave or 8th street east, a bike is actually faster than a car. Just drove on rainy days. I can attest that they're the worst drivers in the world, but when your commute is 15 to 20 minutes, it's not such a big deal.

That's how you do it.  My last 2 years there I rented an apartment right across the street from my company's office in Rosslyn.  Commute wasn't worth the headache

Wish I had that option, but I don't. My wife lives 4 blocks from our house in Rockville and I work out past Dulles Airport. One of us is going to have to slog through a tough commute.

I would love to find a new job, but the sequester made that hard this year and this shutdown is making it impossible - and bullshiat until the next election will probably fark with our area in the months to come too. I'm still going to be looking... but I'm not holding my breath I'll be finding anything any time soon.

How to troll Channel 19:

Easy one:

"Hey! You know why Mack trucks have a bulldog facing forward on the hood?"

"no, why?"

"That's so one asshole can spend the whole day looking at another one."

I can't take credit for this one, but if you ever want to hear what 10,000 watts of incoherent rage sounds like...

"Why is it awl you truckers tawk like you got a peter stuck in your mouf?"

Yep. The bridges are a huge source of congestion in DC, since it's basically built between the meeting of two large rivers, Potomac and Anacostia. They take the place of the mountain ranges. Like SF itself, lots of the poor people live there and in a neighboring city (Oakland/Baltimore), but everyone with a decent paying job lives as far away as possible, as only the truly rich can afford to live in the nice parts.

I guess you could make a comparison between Arlington and Silicon Valley, but that's stretching it.

ciberido: mongbiohazard: So much for screwing up traffic on the Beltway. It was much better today, actually. The thing is, these yahoos don't seem to realize that the betway is completely farked traffic every day of the school year, and quite a few over the summer too. Trying to screw up traffic on it is like pissing into an ocean of piss. Yeah, you added 0.0000001% more piss... congrats, loser.

TheTurtle: FWIW, I think reports are that thirty (30) trucks are currently maintaining traffic flow in this protest of "thousands."  In other words, except for the horns (I heard maybe eight of them go by near US50 and the Beltway an hour or so ago), you'd be hard-pressed to tell them apart from the rest of traffic.

And it's still raining, so there's that.

Apparently truckers that were attempting to slow traffic were pulled over by the police and told to cut that shiat out and be on their way.

/Traffic was better today than it was yesterday

Neither do those of us from the land of cotton and college football. We use the number alone, or (if there's a possibility of confusion) the letter I.

I got a good chuckle from both those comments. I meant works. Her job is close enough to walk to, and she makes more than I do so we're not moving.

I used to have a job only about 5 minutes from our house, but then my old company sold off my division to my new company, so here I am...

So let's sort this out. 30 truckers attempted to subvert the democratic process, destroy the world economy, and dismantle America's security apparatus by attempting to slow DC drivers' already terrible commute to an even slower speed.

2013-10-11 06:02:10 PM
So, you're going to use  federally funded public roads to "protest". On a Friday. At the major commute time. It took me 1 1/2 hours to go from Belvoir to Triangle. I just got home. The only thing you're doing is pissing people off and after sitting in a car on I-95 with a full bladder for a farking hour and a half I would've gotten out of my car and beat your farktarded asses myself. Guess what, the only thing commuters want to do is GET HOME. They couldn't give a shait less about your "protest".

medius: On its website, the group lists several demands, including that President Barack Obama resign immediately

Look, I like Joe Biden as much as the next dude, but even I don't have much of a hard-on for President Biden. But apparently that's exactly what this Convoy wants.

The complaint about low wages is the real shocker to me. Are you serious? Nobody's gonna help you there, buddy. That's the invisible hand of the free market at work.

And I don't get the pissing match about who has the "worst" traffic. Beyond a certain threshold, it really doesn't matter. You're just at the bottom of the pit scraping by. The Top X Worst Traffic Zones are all Equally Worst.

casual disregard: And I don't get the pissing match about who has the "worst" traffic. Beyond a certain threshold, it really doesn't matter. You're just at the bottom of the pit scraping by. The Top X Worst Traffic Zones are all Equally Worst.

This.

There are 3 levels of traffic:

1) What traffic?  You might have a bad intersection or bottleneck here and there, but the system isn't completely farked (See: Most mid-sized cities)
2) I can avoid the traffic and rush hour lasts maybe an hour.  A good example of this is the Detroit metro and the mile road grid.  If 696 is screwed up (and it is), then I get on 12 mile.  If 12 mile is screwed up (ditto), I get on 13 mile or 10 mile.
3) I can't move.  There is no way to avoid the traffic and I might as well just sit here as it takes me 75 minutes to get from the Golden Gate Bridge to 280.

I've lived in Detroit (1 to 2 depending on your local freeway), SF (3), Seattle (3), and Boston(3).  I'm half-considering trying to move back to Detroit at some point just to avoid the traffic BS.

/Honestly, if they'd just fix the mountain passes (transit or car, I'm not picky.  I'd prefer car because they're the gateways to Tahoe and the rest of California which you need a car to get to.), put some light rail across the bridges, finish BART through SJ, and fix a couple of the stupider weave areas, SF metro *could* have passable traffic (Namely, rush hour ends before 7:00) and then you'd just take the mass transit into SF proper.

2013-10-11 06:50:13 PM
How about they start by paying a fair share of taxes for Federal Highways, then we can talk about their outlanding demands.

Problem with the Tea Party is they imagine that every program other than the ones that directly benefit them are unnecessary and the rest are funded by magic fairy dust.

He should probably just go pick her up. It might be cold.
