I commute every day from Rockville to somewhere past Dulles. I-270 to 495 to I-66 - and then back again. There's really only one bridge over the Potomac I can take, so there aren't really any alternate routes. Yesterday: one hour and 45 minutes. Today: one hour and 15 minutes.

So much for screwing up traffic on the Beltway. It was much better today, actually. The thing is, these yahoos don't seem to realize that the betway is completely farked traffic every day of the school year, and quite a few over the summer too. Trying to screw up traffic on it is like pissing into an ocean of piss. Yeah, you added 0.0000001% more piss... congrats, loser.

This reminds me of the silly idea of truckers boycotting California over the new smog rules. Yes, it'll hurt California short-term, but any truckers who participate long-term, since all Chinese goods come through CA and more than half of America's food supply. Someone else will step up while they'll be unemployed and blacklisted.

pockypimp: duffblue: DC has the worst traffic in the first world.

Obviously you've never been in southern California, the 5, 110 or 405 are parking lots all the time.  Heck any of the LA area freeways/roads blow goats.  30 minutes to go 15 miles is normal.  2 hours to go 20 miles was a standard for me going from West Hollywood to East LA.

My friend who lived in Virginia and commuted into DC said the big problem is the lack of roads into/out of DC.  In LA there's plenty of options but they all suck.

While LA is the only place I know where you can be gridlocked on the freeway at 3 am on a Saturday or Sunday morning (anywhere within 5-6 miles of Hollywood) with no roadwork or accidents, on average the traffic there is remarkably good compared to DC. DC just falls over and dies between 6 am and 8 pm every day, all day. Also, LA drivers actually can drive, despite the occasional idiot and accident, as long as you don't expect anyone to use their turn signals; DC drivers appear to be having nonstop seizures on the road all the time.

DC infrastructure is more like San Francisco's, woefully underbuilt and the same problems with day commuters, only with several times the people.

Pocket Ninja: I've actually been swayed by this group's goals, and I've decided to help participate in clogging the beltway today. I'm organizing like-minded drivers -- you don't have to have a truck, any car will do -- and we're going to block the northbound stretch of 495 going up form Tyson's Corner and around the spur toward Bethesda. Plan on being in that area around 3:30; it'll be epic. Don't forget to honk your horn for solidarity.

I didn't know about this until I got into work this morning, my commute part of the Beltway to 95 N. I had a semi stop in the middle lane at one point and then pull over to the shoulder. Almost every large truck was driving around 30 miles an hour, which is slow even for the downpour that was occurring at the same time.

Couple that with the idiot drivers around here who can't stay off their phones, or the illegals afraid to get a ticket, and it turned 18 miles into an hour slog.

I didn't see a single police vehicle.

Their stated plan was to block 3 lanes out of four lanes so emergency vehicles could get through using the 4th lane.  Though I have a suspicion that if they DID slow 3 out of 4 lanes down to 15 mph for hours on end, the 4th lane probably wouldn't continue to progress at the speed it would on days this protest wasn't going on.

Looking more at the Inrix site for their "world" stats.  By "world" they mean North America and Europe.  Los Angeles is number 3 behind Bruxelles (Brussels?) and Antwerpen (Antwerp?).  Honolulu and SF make 7 and 8.

As far as who Intrix is, according to their "Who we are" they're a traffic analysis company that sells data to just about everybody it seems.

I lived in DC twice over the past five years, for eight months each time (working on the inauguration). I solved the traffic problem pretty easily. Rented an apartment in Capitol Hill, left my car parked, and rode a bicycle. On Mass Ave or 8th street east, a bike is actually faster than a car. Just drove on rainy days. I can attest that they're the worst drivers in the world, but when your commute is 15 to 20 minutes, it's not such a big deal.

Yeah they finally made it go all the way around Oahu. Other than that it was a lot of passes, tunnels, etc. Way too many people on that one island. On the Big Island the new highways look spectacular and empty.

People not shutting off their turn signals, driving 35 in the left lane, etc. doesn't help either. On the plus side, you can get around the entire island without needing to hit a freeway if you wanted to. Once they get the super ferry going it may help alleviate some congestion as people can get off Oahu. I hope they eventually put in a superstructure to link the islands in my lifetime.

No shiat. CDL hits are a big one and truckers don't like their revenue messed with. A simple CDL parking violation/missed station/extra hour of run time can cost you your normal license as well as they don't separate the commercial from non. You also don't want to get the truck messed with/impounded as the owners you are running for will get a might miffed if your ass-hattery costs them anything even thought they are the ones telling you to keep a second log book etc...
