I've actually been swayed by this group's goals, and I've decided to help participate in clogging the beltway today. I'm organizing like-minded drivers -- you don't have to have a truck, any car will do -- and we're going to block the northbound stretch of 495 going up form Tyson's Corner and around the spur toward Bethesda. Plan on being in that area around 3:30; it'll be epic. Don't forget to honk your horn for solidarity.

I knew I was smart to put up my "DISCOUNT METH OUTLET" tent on 270 today.

Now my biggest decision is which eye gets the monocle and my biggest worry is when will my Veyron be modified to be top-hat-accessible.

It doesn't take three days. And frankly there are more then enough trucks in the area to get 100+ doing this. But Pocket Ninja snark is right on, how the hell could you tell?

There are very few tow trucks that have the ability to pull a tractor trailer.

I'm with you on this! I'm planning the same thing today for the stretch of I-5 between Olympia and Seattle, Washington and everyone's just going to idle in their cars until midnight. I'm hoping the turnout will be good.

They only have to pull them to the side of the road so traffic can clear. Meanwhile these brave patriots can rot in jail over night while the trucks get impounded.

Obviously you've never been in southern California, the 5, 110 or 405 are parking lots all the time.  Heck any of the LA area freeways/roads blow goats.  30 minutes to go 15 miles is normal.  2 hours to go 20 miles was a standard for me going from West Hollywood to East LA.

My friend who lived in Virginia and commuted into DC said the big problem is the lack of roads into/out of DC.  In LA there's plenty of options but they all suck.

Just takes one bulldozer or front-end loader to shove them or roll them sideways off the highway. The truckers can salvage the hulks when they're out of jail.

West coast of the Mississippi. But here we call it "shore."

2013-10-11 12:46:13 PM
FWIW, I think reports are that thirty (30) trucks are currently maintaining traffic flow in this protest of "thousands."  In other words, except for the horns (I heard maybe eight of them go by near US50 and the Beltway an hour or so ago), you'd be hard-pressed to tell them apart from the rest of traffic.

And it's still raining, so there's that.

New York drivers laughs at your so called traffic as it takes one hour to traverse the 2 miles between NY/NJ virtually every rush hour.

Seems like the 495 is a magnet for these protests going back a long ways. Why, I remember one time, heading back to NY after a meeting in Covington, thinking that I'd be able to miss rush hour if I passed by DC before 4pm. After going maybe one mile in an hour's time, I ended up going for early dinner at a mall in Tyson's Corner and then shopping till rush hour ended.

Now that I think about it, maybe it's just all a conspiracy designed to boost business just off the exits...

OK, to all you LA and NY drivers saying you have worse traffic than DC:

The D.C. region's traffic is worse than chronically choked L.A., San Francisco and New York, the report says.

I used to work in the Shirlington Gateway building just inside the beltway.  It was 10 miles, door to door from my townhouse and was a 45 min drive every day.  Your friend is right.  There's very few major roads that actually go into DC, so when you have an 8 lane highway dumping onto a 4 lane highway, it's gets pretty shiatty.

If these people are protesting the federal government shouldn't they be avoiding the interstate?

Also I'm sure the best way to get people to agree with your viewpoint is to make an already crappy commute even worse.

You poor man. I wouldn't wish the Fredericksburg to DC and DC to Fredericksburg commute on my worst enemy. Rarely do it, maybe twice a year, but did it one Friday night and it took 4 hours. No accidents at all. Just traffic. Google maps says it should be a 53 minute drive. Even left at 3pm. Next time try 2pm I guess.

May not look very different during rush hour, but I can guarantee you that if you are one of those smart enough to get on the Beltway normally outside of rush hour, I imagine you'll be feeling that pain this weekend too.
