I'm betting there is more to this behind the scenes than we are hearing.

And let's keep in mind Dana has NEVER, EVER said something in the heat of the moment, only to reverse it later on.

Nope. NEVER.

After watching it, this was my first thought.  I didn't think it was that egregious.

Speaking of repeatedly punching an unconscious opponent, does anyone know of a good penis moisturizer?

This is the fourth incident, in MMA, where Palhares held on a submission after his opponent tapped and there is well known one incident from a grappling tournament in 2011. This is also the guy that jumped up on the cage to celebrate, even though the fight wasn't stopped. His manager's statements don't help much either, he basically said that Palhares isn't malicious, just a simple man that has trouble following instructions.

I get that he is a repeat offender. I'm just thinking he (or his management) said something after the fight that pissed off Dana.

Let's see what the commission does.

Go back and look at the replay. There's a moment after Pierce has tapped for about the 30th time, and after referee Keith Peterson has flung his body onto the two of them to signal the end of the fight. In that moment you can see the flash of recognition on Palhares' face. He looks down at where the referee is lying, at where Pierce is grimacing in pain, and he knows the fight is over. He has to. Then he gives it one more good, inexcusable yank.

Hmmm. I did not notice that before. I think my opinion is changed. This is the second time in the UFC he has done something like this, and really looking at it closely, total shiatbag move.

I hope he stays banned for life.

FACT:  People cite the Tomasz Drwal fight as evidence that Palhares holds onto submissions too long.

oh, and one last important one:  Drwal went on to fight in the UFC 6 months later, which proves beyond any reasonable doubt that he suffered no injury from that heel hook.

Dong hyun kim did the exact same thing to Erick Silva.

ON THE EXACT SAME CARD AS PALHARES.

Kim got awarded knockout of the night.

Palhares gets banned for life.

This was a third offense for Palhares.

It was a good call. The one before this one in particular was awful.

So it only counts if he breaks his leg and ends his career?  That doesn't make sense.

Totally different, not even in the same league. We've all seen a thousand instances of a guy going down with wonky eyes and then "waking right up" and sometimes even collecting himself and continuing.

/what Henderson did was vengeance, plain and simple

Holy crow. I just watched a replay. Kim absolutely hammered Silva. That was much worse than Palhares.

/Not defending Palhares; if he's a repeat offender then ban if you have to. However, what Kim did shouldn't be allowed.

You apparently know little about grappling. Heel hooks usually damage tendons, not bones, and can easily fark up some one enough to end their career.

Pal Yarris not only held it 3.5 seconds too long, but twisted it right before he released it. He should be banned

Robbie Lawler's late punch of Frank Trigg at Rumble on the Rock was my all-time "dirty punch after a KO" leader until Henderson's punch.

In MMA, the only absolute rule is that once the referee intervenes, the fight ends.  The issue is that Palhares did not let go immediately after the referee intervened.

Comparing this to DHK getting in the extra shot on Erik Silva, the following details matter:

 - DHK got the shot in prior to the referee intervening, Palhares kept the lock going for 1 second.
 - Palhares has an established history of this kind of thing.
 - A locked in heel hook can destroy a man's knee and end a career.  Brain trauma aside, an extra shot like DHK landed probably wont end a career or cause any obvious lasting harm.
 - It does not help that Pierce was screaming and tapping like his life depended on it, and Palhares kept the hold locked in for 2 seconds from when Pierce started tapping.
 - Though I did not see it, what probably pushes this beyond the realm of being acceptable is the report that Palhares knew Pierce tapped and appeared to crank it harder.

END COMMUNICATION

I'm glad it's now internet infamous. There was a lot of smack talk leading up to that fight.

In a real jiu jitsu match Rousimar would've been allowed to rip the leg clean off, I guess.

That was a horribly uneducated article that completely ignores Palhares history.

2013-10-11 01:49:18 PM
You go till the ref stops you. He went well after the ref stopped him and one second with that much power is enough for a BJJ leg lock specialist to snap a shin.

He has a history of this and I for one as someone who practices BJJ for fun and not for competition, we have a code among our own that when someome taps you immediately stop. He didnt.

Game over.

The Commision suspeneded him for 120 days of no contact or competition. I'd say he was in the wrong.

I think the issue is that this isn't his first offense.  It's now a pattern of behavior.

First of all, I'm playing devil's advocate in this thread.

I don't think what Kim did was remotely dirty.

I do think Palhares held on too long, and gave it an unnecessary "love torque" after the referee intervened.

I do believe it was not that serious of an offense.

I also believe that the suspension against Drwal was wrongful.

After reading the quote from his opponent at the grappling tournament in the article you linked, it sounds like his manager might be telling the truth. Doesn't excuse the behavior, though.

Also, people do realize that the history of MMA is rife with guys tapping out, and then claiming they didn't, right?

It's kind of been happening, you know, since UFC.... 1 (Ken Shamrock)

Lindland did it, Sonnen did it TWICE

The taps before the ref moves in mean nothing. Until the ref tells you to stop, letting up early, no matter what your opponent is doing, just leads to more issues. If this was anyone else, nothing would be said. He didn't crank it after the fact or let go dirty (by twisting it more to let go of the hold) and the time between referee stoppage and release was fairly quick...

... however, this isn't anyone else, it's Rousimar Palhares. He used up all his warnings many fights ago. He was probably warned in the back for an immediate release when it was called for and he probably held it after the fact just to be defiant.

Even with that said, this is Dana White. Lifetime bans are usually measured in the lifetime of a mistreated goldfish.

Haha. There is obviously a lot of truth to this; however, he does seem to be sticking to the Paul Daley ban.

Because Daley earned all of it.  Who else has been banned that he reversed course on?  Tito was pseudo-banned but he earned his way back in by rehabbing his image and relationship with Dana.  Barnett was effectively acquired in the Strikeforce deal(and that was a decade after his title was stripped).

It seemed Marquardt and Barnett were perma-banned for steroids, but both came back.

Sobral was banned for holding a submission too long against Heath, and never came back.

Ricco Rodriguez was pretty much banned for his weigh in tattoo, and never came back.

Does EA Sports count? He did a complete 180 with them. From banning everyone involved with the EA MMA game to not banning them, to making a business deal with EA.

Doesn't count. Dana said women would NEVER fight in the UFC, so that fight doesn't exist.
