Exactly. The more people the GOP can put out of work, the worse President Obama tends to look.

Infernalist: mrshowrules: EWreckedSean: Mrbogey: Obama won't blink as long as he believes Republicans will be blamed. The damage done by the brinkmanship is a non-consideration for him.

And he will happily do anything he can to make it look worse for Republicans too, no matter whom it hurts in the short term. Which is what politicians, left or right, do. Principle walked out on all sides of government a long time ago.

You know the GOP has truly failed when conservatives start trotting out the "both sides are bad" argument.

The GOP is fleeing in open retreat, screaming like little girls with skinned knees.  Their approval rating is around 27% nationwide, which is as low as it's ever been.  Ever.  In recorded history.

This shutdown wasn't just a disaster, it was THE disaster.  Their political equivalent of Cali's Big One.  All they want to do now is try and end this with 'some' semblance of pride, some small shred of dignity.  And, make no mistake about it, they hate the Tea Party with the power of ten thousand exploding suns now.

Shortly, you are going to see a race of GOP of politicians distancing themselves from Boehner and the Tea Party that is when it will truly be Christmas, Halloween and Easter all rolled up together.

badhatharry: Trivia Jockey: badhatharry: Trivia Jockey: Do these people really not see why "negotiation" isn't even relevant here?  It's like calling up your credit card company after maxing out the card, demanding that they double your limit, and then complaining that they "won't negotiate" when they say no.  And then you refuse to pay the card, go to work, and feed your kids.

Or like when you refuse to pay your rent when your landlord raises the rent because he put in a new air conditioner that doesn't work. Crazy.

That analogy needs tweaking...the air conditioner actually works.  It works so well that the other people in the building who couldn't afford air conditioning now have their apartments cooled fir the first time.

50% of the people didn't want this air conditioner. Now people that were for the new ac are now complaining that they have to pay double for crappy ac.

The landlord needs to at least make an attempt to make the complainers happy. Done with this stupid analogy.

You know, analogies should have at least some basis in reality.  Like, say, 50% said they weren't for the air conditioner, but most of them then turned around and said they were for having cooler air in their homes.  And now people who were against the new AC are now going around and saying that the cooler air coming into their homes makes the air conditioner completely unnecessary.  And now some of the people who were against the air conditioner are threatening to burn down the building unless the air conditioner is taken out.

I don't know about that.  From everything I've seen this week, the establishment GOP has reached its limit with the TP and is now openly hostile and working actively and openly against them.

The biggest thing was the US Chamber of Commerce coming out and declaring that they would finance any and all GOPers who voted for a clean CR/Debt Ceiling raise against a Tea Party primary challenge.

For all his protestations about protecting the full faith and credit of the United States - jittery markets are showing that his brinkmanship could have precisely the opposite effect - the president's real intent is to score a humiliating victory over the GOP.

So the markets were nervous not over the branch of govt in charge of the checkbook holding the debt ceiling hostage but over the branch of government *not* in charge of the checkbook saying that holding the debt ceiling hostage was bad for the global economy?

Its very hard to keep reading when such a disingenuous statement is attempted.

Look, I understand spin and making your "team" look as good as possible, its just the nature of the game.  But when you're pressed into a corner and your choices are saying either that 2+2=5 or keeping your mouth shut, and you choose the former, then its went past understandable spin into the realm of repulsiveness.  I admire skillful players of the game but loathe the cheaters.

God I hope they just keep digging deeper.  And for once in history I would like to see the democrats NOT bail the GOP out of the hole.  But thats what is going to happen, an olive branch of some concession will be offered to the GoP so they can save face.  If the situation was reversed and the Democrats were backed into a corner, the GoP would piss on their dog and rape their daughter while setting the Dems house on fire.  Showing mercy and reaching across the aisle doesnt make us morally superior.  It makes us food to their fanatics.

2013-10-11 09:53:40 AM
For all the hyped indignation over GOP "anarchism," there has been remarkable media reticence about the president's intransigence. He has refused to negotiate anything unless the Republicans fully fund the government and raise the debt ceiling - unconditionally.

Every time the President agrees to a tea party item they back off, double down and then claim the president won't talk. They get almost every thing they wanted from the Grand Bargain, Simpson-Bowels, this years budget, or this summers CR talks but as soon as they get it they back away and add new demands. It is almost like they really don't want an agreement but can't be seen not talking. It is kind of like buy a new car and offering $20,000 on a $25,000 car and when the dealer says yes you demand $15,000 and cry that he wouldn't deal.

After seeing Republicans rush to national monuments to do a huge song and dance number about Obama being a meanie for shutting down what the Republicans shutdown, I think they're looking to create a situation where the President has to decide which bills gets paid and which don't. At that point they'll hammer him non-stop for picking A over B, regardless of what A or B are. Remember, we no longer have a Congress made up of people who have a plan to manage the nation, we have a Congress made up of people who have a plan for their next campaign commercial. For too large of a  percentage of Congress, their one and only talent is campaigning so that's all they do when they're in office.

The GOP has spent 5 years telling everyone that Obama is an egotistical maniacal empty suit dictator that is only worried about his own ego and making himself more powerful.

And now, their one hope, to avoid economic ruin that they will be blamed for through the next two generations, is for Obama to cede power to the minority party in congress and a small fraction of the House and completely destroy the power of the office of the presidency forever.
