1) Kid overreacted. It would have been thrown out in court IF it made it that far. Sad that a young life was lost over an idle threat by the administration

2)Our sex offenders registry needs a complete overhaul if a streaked can end up on there. I thought it was stupid when I added pantyraiders to the list...this goes beyond that.

DrewCurtisJr: With all the hype, has there ever actually been any minor put on a sex offender registry for streaking?

Nope.
And nothing in the article says "administration threatens him with sex offender registry" like the lying Fark headline states.
It's like saying the maximum penalty for stealing is years of prison time, and saying "child COULD face prison time for stealing a candy bar!!"

revman64: Wow!  You really hate Alabama and the deep south.  Why do you live there and when are you going to get out?  Just curious...

Huntsville isn't the deep south.  It's the mid south.  Also, I don't hate Alabama.  I don't know most of Alabama.  I just know this area.  I don't hate the deep south because I've never been there.

Why do I live here?  I was transferred in to this location by my career because the person who was doing it was inept at their job.  I'll be getting out as soon as I can, which can't be soon enough.  There's only so many times a day I can stand hearing some slobbering fat person say that collidj iddint werent not makes me guuder den dem, then I fire them and replace them with another person from out of the area.

In my line of work you do not trust the job to a person from the Huntsville area as has been repetitively shown by firing the local and hiring someone from out of the area.  If the Huntsville people do not like it, they can improve their own lives instead of demand a lowering of capacity and quality of others.

For the record, yes, I did catch the "if you don't like it, leave!" tone you gave and laugh myself silly for it.  If you don't like it that I'm here, make sure you're a decent enough person that others don't have to come and fix your life for you.

No.

It needs destroyed right next to the war on drugs.

Maybe getting yelled at at home by a father who needs a 20 minute cool-down period afterwards was not unusual?

Look at the feminist finding a way to immediately blame the father. Nice dehumanizing language there, too.

"Father" is dehumanising? Theaetetus is a Feminist?

Am I getting trolled?

Don't want to start a whole thing so I won't say any more after this but not trolling, just pointing out to the many fellow farkers who can't stand Theaetetus' one-sided crap that it's not at all surprising he'd take a story about a boy shamed to the point of death about his body and make it even more anti-male.

"A father" plays up the disposability of the parental status and underlines the contempt, as opposed to his father/the father.

This is what comes of letting Puritan idealists run a country. Seriously, if these people feel that displaying the naked human body needs to be punished, they need to examine their own filthy minds.

The weird thing is that the kid was so freaked out about the possible (not fully understood?) consequences of his streaking that he embarked on a course of action with even sharper consequences.

I feel the School and the State have no liability here.

Really? The same school and state that should understand that children and teens don't have the same level of comprehension or reaction to circumstances that an adult would? For not understanding that a kid facing the same level of punishment as a child molester might react in ways they couldn't predict?

This is what kids do. They do stupid stuff and make mistakes. This is why we supervise them and we certainly don't hold them to same level of accountability as adults. When they screw up, they deserve a chance to understand what they've done and make it right. We used to leave this up to parents. Now we get the law involved for reasons I do not understand except for in cases of extreme parental neglect.

Treating him like a criminal for a harmless prank should be considered child abuse at best and cruel and unusual punishment at worse - especially as they caused him so much anguish that he took his own life. The adults involved should be censured harshly, if not fired.

Maybe he meant my use of "afather" rather than "his father"? That's all I can guess.  But if I did say "his", then the rest of the sentence wouldn't be grammatically correct.

Theaetetus is a Feminist?

Am I getting trolled?

Yes, and probably.

That part is fine and sensible, I just didn't know where he had gleaned it from your post.

wittydh: papajoefong: Sounds like somebody's on the sex offender list around here and is a little bitter about it.

No.  I moved here from elsewhere and just call it how I see it.  If you don't like how it is around here, change it.

I moved here from somewhere else too.  I also like to call it how I see it.  The difference between you and I is that (after having lived up North and out West), I think Huntsville is a relatively nice area to live.  You're welcome to your opinion of the area, although you're coming off as unhappy and/or bitter.  Also, I get the impression you're using "senseless beasts" as a proxy for "people you don't like or disagree with you."

Just so we're clear, I think the school administration over-reached and should burn for it.

Today they would of charged me blah blah expelled etc.

I thought all Alabama was considered deep south, forgive my ignorance.  Also, I wasn't giving you the "if" part, just know that I've lived in places I disliked because work sent me there and like your intent, got out as soon as I could.  There's good and bad in every city, but it seems the Huntsville area is not your cup of tea and life is too short to spend it somewhere you despise.

This will get worse.  The sex offender monies are the last place orgs can go for funds once the war on drugs is gone.

It is offensive and it destroys lives.  The US has as many people on the sex offender registries as there are people on the TSA's scary 'terrorist non-fly watch list'.  The registry size in the near future will encompass more individuals than the US military.

Legally, no, but the father will sue for wrongful death, and the state will likely settle for a hundred thou to avoid a costly and emotional trial.

The state should countersue. The kid did die immediately following a fight with the dad, after all.

wittydh: brytallica: Regardless of how the school overreacted or the supposed worst case scenario repercussions, I do not understand why the kid would kill himself.

You'd have to live in a terribly oppressive mentally challenged area that will actively seek to destroy your life and the lives of everyone you ever liked in the least to fully understand.  It has to be the sense and sensibilities of other people at all times and you're not allowed to have a like or opinion that's not reflecting JJJEEEEEEEESSSSSUUUSSS and the basic mindless thoughts of everyone else or you will suffer.

See the above comment where I stated it rather plainly about a life being over if they're on the sex offender list around here and someone called me a sex offender for it, even though there's no workable reason to believe that I'm on it.  If you don't tote the company line around here you can very easily lose your life or not have one worth living.

It's just the way it is.  From the mouthes of babes, and from the actions of idiots.

Wow, dude, it was a joke.  You really need to lighten up.  That much hate isn't good for you.

Obviously this is not an act which should have death as a possible punishment, but it does bring up an important issue to explain to children (and adults, for that matter) in the modern world;  everything you do, no matter your age, legal culpability, or experience, will be tracked and likely recorded, and available to both public and state likely forever, and you will have to deal with the fallout of that for the rest of your life.

It's like that old threat of a 'permanent record', the internet now provides one with audio and video to boot, and it never forgets, and it will follow you forever.  Since it's there forever, age is immaterial, as it will eventually be applied to the 20, 30, and beyond year old you.

I'm not saying it ~should~ be that way, or that you ~should~ forever be stuck with the consequences of youthful indiscretions, but that looks like the world we're going to be living in, so it's probably a good idea that even young kids be made aware of it.  In public - and in fact, any time around someone with a camera phone - act as if someone was recording you, and every employer, the police, each potential hookup or mate, every one of your friends and family, and your (potential) children will see it.  Probably in HD, with facebook name annotations in case you're in a mask or wearing a helmet and you can't easily be identified (see recent motorcycle rampage in NY).

revman64: Kid must have had some serious problems besides this to go as far as killing himself.  The school leaders and school district must feel so guilty for their over-reaction.  Wouldn't be surprised to see a lawsuit come out of this eventually.  Stupid prank, but not worth killing yourself over.  It would have blown over in time and although he was chastised by adults, he was a legend with his peers.  No judge would have put him on a sex crimes registry at 15 years old over this, that was just a threat to keep copy-cats at bay.  There has to be more to this story...

To a 15-year-old, the prospect of being put on the sex offenders list pretty much meant the end of his life. Once you are on that list, you can't have a career, nor get scholarships to attend college, nor have a relationship, nor go out in public without some nut-job parent calling the cops on you.

Once you are on the list, you have to spend the rest of your life locked away from the rest of the world. And no, I don't mean jail. A house can be a prison when the outside world rejects your very existence.

The only reason I am considered a sex offender is because I committed
an offense that triggers registration. In any other context, my crime
would never be considered a sex offense, and I would not be
considered a threat to society.
-Trent B., a Pennsylvania registrant convicted of streaking

At least 13 states require registration for public urination; of those, two
limit registration to those who committed the act in view of a minor.

But, of course, that is anecdotal. I can't find any actual news stories.

Maybe it is a per state thing. We have had streakers and pantyraiders end up on our sexual offenders registry, though usually for streakers it is listed as public exposure, but raiders are listed as other;pantyraiding. It makes for some lawls reading through the registry that is for sure.

The also list incest as a sexual offense even if the parties involved were above 18 and consensual (if caught it is still a crime). I'm convinced out state registry is just a giant shame list instead of actually protecting people.

Zero tolerance policies were created to keep monsters like this off the street and out of our society. Oh and to help Republicans politically, while filling up corporate prisons. Hopefully someone will realize they didn't think their cunning plan all the way through although it's too late for this kid.

To add:

It is completely legal to discriminate in housing.  Depending on circumstances you may be homeless for the rest of your life.

It is completely legal to discriminate in working.  Depending on circumstances you may have no income for the rest of your life.

In some states you get a special DL with the scarlet letter right across it.  Pay for something with a credit card and they need ID?  Congratulations, the clerk now hates you and the store can ban you.

In some locals you may not be within x distance of schools, public parks, etc...  ever.  Not going there, just be within that radius (even driving by as going across town).  Extrapolated from this in many cities, you are not allowed in the city limits for the rest of your life.

------

It is offensive.  It is not rule of law.  It is the last universal dog that the CJ system and Vengeance Based Americans can kick.

/This does not even get into the fact that there is are federal, state, and municipal lists and laws that reference and  co-opt each other so that at any time it can be as difficult to understand what your actual rules on the registry are and thus making it much more likely for you to be thrown back in the can.

Heron: slayer199: Streaking has gone from a relatively harmless and occasionally amusing prank to a serious crime.  FTA::"Campbell added that that the incident was not just a prank and needed to be treated seriously."  Well, I think the kid treated it seriously.  Well done administration.   You've done an excellent job putting fear into anyone that would consider doing this heinous crime again,  Farking assholes. DIAF Mr. Campbell along with the rest of your self-righteous asshole administration.

Hell, at our homecoming game (and parade) we had guys that mooned the opposing team's stands one football season.  Yes, they were suspended, but nobody was talking about citing them for indecent exposure and sex crimes.

One of the many problems here is how school admins have criminalized discipline. There used to be room for kids doing stupid stuff in the US, now school administrations will sick the cops on you for stepping out of line. My senior high school year, our admin held a senior's only assembly where they basically said "if there is a senior prank, we won't graduate any of you, and we will bring charges against anyone we can pin it on". I doubt they were serious, but it just goes to show that these days, rather than there being any space for kids being kids, School administrators choose to run things on fear and the threat of criminal charges.

Many "senior pranks" amount to simple vandalism, sometimes in extreme amounts.  Do you know how much it costs to replace every lock at a high school because somebody put glue in them as a "senior prank"?  Of course criminal charges should be brought in that sort of situation.

Now, that's a different issue than the sex offender registry.  If somebody is such a threat to the public, then the punishment for the crime should be life in prison.  If not, branding a scarlet A on them is not helpful.  In any case, it appears that the actual cops weren't going to actually put this guy on the sex offender list, just that the principal was ranting about doing such.

A guy who lives on my street is on the sex offender registry for dating (and I assume, farking) a 14 year old when he was 18. They'd dated for awhile, but apparently her parents didn't know that, caught them, bam, sex offender.

Of course, now the dumbass keeps himself in trouble (I think he had originally had a 10 year registration sentence) because he keeps failing to re-register when he moves. He sells pills, so I'm sure he doesn't like to alert the police to his whereabouts.

Fark this particular guy, but I'm sure he's not the only one this kinda crap happens to.

DrPainMD: Kittypie070: OK, I hereby decree that all humans in the Holy Godly State of Alabama should have their junk carefully removed and cryogenically stored, to be used only for procreative purposes after lengthy psychological screening prior to each act of procreative activity.

I mean, since junk is so satanic and hideous and illegal and sh*t.

Ummm... it was the liberals in California who started the sex offender registry BS in the US. It went federal in 1994, under the liberal Democrats and Bill Clinton, as part of the assault weapons ban.

What does that have to do with what she said?

Good lord, your blinders are really that big?

//// sad you iq doesn't take after them.

Easy Reader: LasersHurt: ...and was buried october 7th. I know this might get downvoted, and I apologize for any errors or wrongdoings by posting this. This is my Boobies, and I felt this just needed to be said. So much is being said that is wrong and I just want the truth at there. If you have any questions, pm me."

???

The Reddit post said "first" and then "post" instead of "Boobies", but on Fark, if you put the word "first" and then the word "post" in a row, it turns it into "Boobies".
