Too bad that a good thing like the Sex Offender Registry has been misused from its original intention and is now wielded like a blunt instrument against anyone. That the school administrators were pretty much fine in using it as a threat against a teen to possibly ruin the rest of his not even reached adulthood is sad.

I assure you it would not have possibly ruined the rest of his life.  It would have definitely ruined the rest of his life.  The people of the Huntsville area are more of a senseless beast than Anonymous tries to portray that they are.

cman: 15 years old: not old enough for others to fark but old enough to get put on sexual registration lists

This is spot on.  If the person is not old enough to consent, then how the HELL do we treat them as old enough to be put on a sex offender registry.

Reminds of that cases in Penn where the kids "sexting" were both charged as adults for distributing child pron... of themselves... charged as adults..

/I do think Penn fixed that problem recently at least

Penn?

slayer199: Streaking has gone from a relatively harmless and occasionally amusing prank to a serious crime.  FTA::"Campbell added that that the incident was not just a prank and needed to be treated seriously."  Well, I think the kid treated it seriously.  Well done administration.   You've done an excellent job putting fear into anyone that would consider doing this heinous crime again,  Farking assholes. DIAF Mr. Campbell along with the rest of your self-righteous asshole administration.

Hell, at our homecoming game (and parade) we had guys that mooned the opposing team's stands one football season.  Yes, they were suspended, but nobody was talking about citing them for indecent exposure and sex crimes.

One of the many problems here is how school admins have criminalized discipline. There used to be room for kids doing stupid stuff in the US, now school administrations will sick the cops on you for stepping out of line. My senior high school year, our admin held a senior's only assembly where they basically said "if there is a senior prank, we won't graduate any of you, and we will bring charges against anyone we can pin it on". I doubt they were serious, but it just goes to show that these days, rather than there being any space for kids being kids, School administrators choose to run things on fear and the threat of criminal charges.

Pichu0102: If this is true, this certain principal is going to be in for a world of pain once this hits the courts. Doubly so if there were living witnesses to this willing to testify. Not sure what he'd be charged with, or civilly charged with, but a jury most likely is going to be looking for blood if that gets out.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but absolutely nothing will happen to the people involved in this now-claimed scare tactic.

See, here's the thing of it in this area: People in charge of anything at all are going to do anything they want to the things they are in charge of.  If it works out in the person in charge's favor absolutely nothing is done about it even if people complain.  However, if the thing the person in charge does goes wildly wrong they claim it was just a scare tactic for DAAH CHILLRIN and then everyone either complains more or says oh duh okay we's laaeik it now (plus or minus a few H's and Y's for no apparent reason).  They occasionally use "it was just a joke" and the mindless people around here eat it up.  Either way, nothing actually happens to the person in authority because they're in authority and around here, that's all it takes to be invincible.

It's just the way it is.  Stupid people in charge of stupid people is always going to be a nightmare scenario, one that nobody knows how to get out of because... they're stupid.

So I've been to New Orleans on any given weekend, not just Mardi Gras and Savanna on St. Paddy's Day and adult naked girls on the street are plentiful. Do they get arrested and put on a list? Keep in mind, I am in no way advocating that they should be, I'm just asking.

webron: papatex: 15 year old who wanted attention and got attention no longer wanted attention.

I take it from your mocking tone that you have no idea what being put on a sex offender registry would do to this kid. It would quite literally have wrecked his life. Forget college or holding down a decent job, this kid would have been lucky not to end up living under a bridge somewhere. But go ahead an blame him, I am sure that makes you feel better. Just try to imagine if it was someone you knew. Would you still blame him? Or would you show a little empathy?

First of all, you sound fat. Secondly, who else should get the blame? Did the principles make him run nekkid on the field? Life's about choices and dealing with them. That being said, whoever pushed him to the point of suicide should look hard at their own lives and consider if it was worth it. Nothing in life is EVER worth suicide or scaring someone so much that they think about it. A fifteen year old doing a prank or a drunk killing an innocent, there's no use in scaring them so much that life isn't worth it to them.

emgamera: papatex: Worse than this- peeing behind the bar where no one can see you and getting on the sex offender's list because of it.

Sounds like the "no one can see you" part wasn't entirely accurate.

This is true, wasn't me, an acquaintance, but I guess the cop had something against him taking a wizz on a tree.

If that reddit post is true, I feel terrible for the father who was the last person to talk to his son and shortly after the "talk", the boy hung himself.  I bet there wasn't much talking going on, just a frustrated father going off as evidenced by his need to go outside to cool off.  As a parent of teenagers, I try to mix the tough-love conversations and encouragement together to soften the blow a bit.  The boy did something stupid, but it should not have been brought to life-ending consequences.  I know this is FARK, but this is really sad and such a waste.

When I was in jr high some big ass dude beat the shiat out of me like 3 times (I'm a skinny guy). I complained to the principal and he was just "boys will be boys" and wrote it off. The 4th time I slugged the dude and knocked him out. Got suspended and almost expelled. Wound up on my "permanent record".

Life isn't fair sometimes. But my sad story doesn't compare to this bullshiat.

Sigh...

The 1947 California  law was passed by the [x] majority and signed by GOP Governor Earl Warren
The 1994 federal law was passed by Democratic majorities in both houses and signed by Bill Clinton
The 2006 update that created the national registry was passed by GOP majorities in both houses and signed by George W Bush

[x] = couldn't for the life of me find out who controlled the state legislature

So, in short, BSABSVR.

Half the country club elite would be sex offenders based on the number of golfers taking a leak in the rough if the police wanted to generate real case-load.

revman64: Kid must have had some serious problems besides this to go as far as killing himself.

This, as evidenced by this:

LasersHurt: After the meeting, he and his dad had a big fight. After which his dad went out side for 20 minutes to cool down and collect his thoughts. He left his son asleep on the couch, and when he came back, he wasn't there. He finally found him hanging in the garage.

Maybe getting yelled at at home by a father who needs a 20 minute cool-down period afterwards was not unusual?

The weird thing is that the kid was so freaked out about the possible (not fully understood?) consequences of his streaking that he embarked on a course of action with even sharper consequences.

I feel the School and the State have no liability here.

You'd have to live in a terribly oppressive mentally challenged area that will actively seek to destroy your life and the lives of everyone you ever liked in the least to fully understand.  It has to be the sense and sensibilities of other people at all times and you're not allowed to have a like or opinion that's not reflecting JJJEEEEEEEESSSSSUUUSSS and the basic mindless thoughts of everyone else or you will suffer.

See the above comment where I stated it rather plainly about a life being over if they're on the sex offender list around here and someone called me a sex offender for it, even though there's no workable reason to believe that I'm on it.  If you don't tote the company line around here you can very easily lose your life or not have one worth living.

Look at the feminist finding a way to immediately blame the father. Nice dehumanizing language there, too.

Legally, no, but the father will sue for wrongful death, and the state will likely settle for a hundred thou to avoid a costly and emotional trial.

"...could have been put on the sex offenders list".
Just because the law (or some interpretation of it) says that is a possible outcome, doesn't mean it is an outcome that would realistically happen.
Also, he didn't kill himself because he was afraid of being on the sex offenders list.
But continue with your DURP and believing the Daily Mail, suckers.

While I agree that it was a complete over-reaction, if he really was threatened by the school administration with being charged as a sex-offender, he most likely felt like his life was essentially over. Couple that with the overall emotional instability and lack of perspective inherent to most 15 year olds, it's not hard to see how he ended up where he did.

SmellsLikePoo: Misconduc: This is how sad society has become, kid had no idea what the consequences were - now society killed him.

hell I brought a paintball marker on school campus and the resource officer who had some brains realized it was disassemed in a box and had no CO2 - she told me to park my car across the street and that was it.
Today they would of charged me blah blah expelled etc.

I'll hazard a guess that anyone over the age of 25 has a similar story.  I was in the honor society, a two-sport varsity athlete, and went on to an Ivy League... I can think of a half dozen things that I did in HS that, when viewed in current "zero tolerance" light would have gotten me expelled, and likely ruined my future prospects, and yet, somehow, I didn't end up a blight on society... Go figure!

You're on Fark, with a handle like that.  Pretty bleak...
