I thought Amadinnerjacket said there weren't any homosexuals in Iran.

At least 17 people who had tattoos, make-up, or were wearing rainbow bracelets were blindfolded and taken to an unknown location, according to a local source.

Kinky!  I'd be all like, "All right, this party's getting started!"

If you are a homosexual, then by all means, have fun with that.  But if you're doing so in a conservative, religious, fanatic place like Iran, you might want to think twice before publicly flaunting it.

It's sad.  It really is.  But NOTHING is going to change the minds of those religious nut balls.  You need to be more careful.

Mega-mind versus min-mind, as evaluated by reaction to these stories:

Mega mind looks at this and thinks "Wow. Theocracies suck. I should do anything I can to prevent theocracy in my own society, and fight to reduce the influence of religions on my government."

Mini-mind thinks "Durr - those (fill in the blanks with whatever group you are bigoted against) sure are bad people!"

Which are you? :D

Yes.  There is that.  The ultimate tease, as it were.

I wonder if the new guy will strike a different tone on this, too.

We haven't put the retrograde, superstitious, authoritarian dumbasses in charge.  Not that they haven't been trying really hard here lately.

Yeah - America is still one of the better places to live, in general. And if we can preserve democracy against those who would reserve all wealth and power to the 1%, we can stay that way. I give us pretty good odds.

They've been trying really hard because Jesus.

I've heard enough scary political talk from my mother and her crazy christ-nutter friends to set myself against their lunatic goals. Mom was all for the Pat Roberson presidential run back in 88' (Pat Robertson bumper stickers everywhere), loves Michele Bachmann and every crackpot idea that rolls out of her head.

But the endgame for them is this -  The † Lord will come back and lead this chosen nation to glory, and "separate the sheep from the goats". "Goats" being the non-believers or whoever they don't like at the moment, it would seem.

I pretty much vote for whichever politician will counteract their vote when it comes to keeping crazy people out of the high places. Not that it matters much anymore.

Teenagers and young adults have been sneaking off to the mountains of Iran for raves for years, which makes the oppression of their current system all the more ironic.

While that's true, and we should count our blessings, that should never be used as a reason to accept discrimination.

FTFY.  A couple of generations of electing fundies to enact religious agendas, and we might just catch up.

Authorities in the Islamic republic have previously likened homosexuals to satanists in an apparent attempt to further smear them in the eyes of the country's religious conservatives.

Is that better or worse than having them shoved down one's throat?

So attending a birthday party is "publicly flaunting" your homosexuality?  My sister-in-law's birthday is next week.  I've got some bad news for her.

FTFA: Until recently same-sex sodomy was punishable by death but a new amendment to the penal code, approved in 2012, has brought new changes.

Ah, cool, so they're at least becoming less barbaric, then?

Under the new penal code, in effect, the person who played an active role will be flogged 100 times if the sex was consensual and he was not married, but the one who played a passive role will still be put to death regardless of his marriage status. Punishment for mosahegheh (lesbianism) is 100 lashes for all individuals involved, but it can lead to the death penalty if the act is repeated four times.

Uh... Well, I guess that's some kind of progress, anyway... At this rate, they may join the 21st century sometime around the 23rd century...

As long as they have their priorities straight on who needs to be put to death vs just getting 100 lashes!
