SuperSonics fan from way back, here. Karl Malone, while one of the greatest players of all time, has always also been one of the dirtiest. This is no surprise at all.

Back in 83, they let 13 year olds run all over The Forum before the game. I sat and watched Lenny Wilkins interviewed. I started as a Laker fan the summer of 79 when the Sonics were champs. The Sonics did get an opportunity during the next 34 years, losing to MJ. Of course, my Lakers lost 6 Finals during that period, although we won another 10. Oh yeah, Karl Malone was a dirty player. Also, he and Payton combined to help us in one of those 6 losses.

This is why there is no injury report in Hockey, and why it is a superior game.

You mean Dikembe Mutumbo didn't run into the room, swat Malone's jazz aside, and wag his finger?

Yeah, it's Karl Malone's fault he played during the time of Michael Jordan and that his team's management thought Greg Ostertag was a serious NBA center.

Of course, by your rationale, Steve Kerr is better than Gary Payton, Trent Dilfer better than Dan Marino, so it's all pretty silly.

Before the hating on Karl Malone gets too out of hand, it's worth remembering that he drove his truck to a WCW arena to save Diamond Dallas Page's keister from a beatdown back in the day

Cut Karl some slack here.

I remember watching him play in his heyday, trudging up and down the court in the snow, uphill, both ways. The chicks would hang after the game just to fondle the onion on his belt.

He got a $40 million contract. How the fark did he earn that contract and whose nekkid pictures did he have to get it?

Karl Malone is a scumbag, on and off the court.  The image of him trying to hurt people by kicking his legs while driving to the hoop is bad, but not as bad as raping a teenager while in college.

Haha. Loved the Pistons during that era. The NBA was a better product then, IMO. Now, it's really soft and even more made of marketing.

Who do you hate in the NBA now? LeBron, for being a whore? Boring.

This is true in all levels of sports. After reconstructive knee surgery in high school, I had to wear a huge brace whenever I had a soccer game. Arseholes on the other team would target me/the brace the entire game. Little did they know, that damn thing was like a football helmet on my knee and hurt like hell if it slammed into your thigh.

Did the article at all reference that he likes to hunt?

The most awkward thing I have ever seen was Malone on a Harley on State Street wearing one of those half ping pong ball helmets.
It kind of came across as a "look at me! I can balance on a motorcycle!" moment.

People ask Karl Malone what Karl Malone think of arm sleeves. Sleeves good, basketball uniforms don't have no sleeves and sometimes Karl Malone arms get cold. But here's my whole thing. Basketball a game, and Karl Malone shoot game with a bow through the el-bow. Sleeve cover up elbow, Karl Malone see wounded deer. The Second Commandment say thou shalt bear arms, and Karl Malone's bare arms mean he strapping the guy with sleeves to his hood. Until next time, this here Karl Malone.

Karl Malone is a giant redneck.  I know one doesn't assume black people are rednecks, but they do exist and he is a prime example.

I never cared for him too much since he admitted he only played basketball because it paid a lot of money.  In other words, he had no passion for the game and in the interview basically said he plays because he can (has the physical gifts to do so) and makes a ton of money.  If the salary to play pro-ball was equal to being a truck driver, he would choose to be a trucker.  Also, Jazz games are 10 minutes longer due to his stupid foul shot routine...yet never saw the violation for it called.

also his counterpart Stockton was quite a dirty little player too.

This makes him just like the entire NFL except for the kickers.  Even basketball is pretty bad for your health.  It seems like a more glamorous career, but truckers are far less likely to be crippled by age 40.

I would comment that athletes spend most of their time traveling around, making it harder to build up families during their prime years for that, but truckers have the same problem.

I've known families of Asian-American rednecks, too.

Isn't that the way with most people and their jobs?  I know I went into IT consulting because it was a good, steady paycheck.

It was the 80s.  It was a league full of dirty players.

I guess you could label me a naive fan, but there are thousands of people who play sports for the joy of the game. It is a little disheartening that there are some who are blessed enough to reach the pro level who get paid to play a game and don't enjoy it.

I would think as an owner you would want people who are hungry to win and enjoy their job and not just there to collect a paycheck.  Maybe that is why the Jazz never won, they had a star player who didn't have the 'hunger' to win.

Look at Tony Gonzalez, he decided to put off retirement to have a shot at the superbowl and not to collect.  If he knew then what he knows now, would he have decided to take the risk to play another year?  Hell, there are rumors of him being traded to KC.  I think he may hang up the laces n the middle of the season if the Falcons try to trade him.

What I find interesting -- in my experience rec league hockey players generally tend to be much more laid back about the game.  They know that they're just out there trying to have fun, get some ice time in, and then have a couple beers in the locker room.  Rec league basketball players, though, often seem to have some delusion that they're being scouted for the NBA.

Things changed after the Knicks/Rockets finals, which set a record for low scoring and low ratings.

I always thought the new rules should've been named after various Knick players.

Harpering:  hand-checking
Oakleying:  flagrant fouling
Starksing:  head-butting
Masoning:  hockey-style side-checking

Why? How is this different from every other person in the country who is doing a job they don't really like because it pays better than doing things they love?
