Good news finally! I had some money left over from the donations you wonderful, wonderful Farkers and Farkettes gave me to care for Mandu so I finally got Mika in for her long overdue (by 3 years) checkup and shots. I don't know what triggered Mandu's lack of appetite and liver disease so I wanted to make sure it wasn't something that spread to her. Definitely not. She is healthy as a horse, and about the size of one too. Mika is a Maine Coon and will be six years old this coming New Years Eve. She weighs 14.5 lb which is above average for female coonies but is a perfect weight for her. Heart, lungs, teeth, eyes, ears, etc. are all in excellent health. The vet said that she has tiny teeth for a coonie, which is small comfort to me when she decides to nip at my toes :p

Good to hear Mika is good!  All of my wife's most favorite cats have been at least part Maine Coon...  I'll have to scan pics of Macduff, and Tuzo...  And that reminds me I never got my dog pics off the old 'puter last week, so I'll have to re-add that to my to-do list!

Happy Caturday!!!! It's time for yet another edition of the Snuffybud Archives (let me know if I'm boring you with these)! I'm doing something a bit different this week as I'm running out of cats to feature. I've skipped Sam and Jet as I only have 1 good picture of them. They were Mrs. Snuffybud's before we met so she's got all the kitten pictures, she says she'll give them to me once she gets around to it. If you've been here over the last 16 months or so you've seen dozens of pictures of Desi, Jack and Cisco, so I'm holding off on them for at least now.

So this week I'm featuring the LOLcatting of my cats! I've pulled together every LOLcat I can find, both done by me or done by you folks. So here we go!

The perfect picture to start with....

Here's a serious question. How do I keep cats OUT of my back yard? I've tried everything. I have two cats. I love my cats. I love cats. I do not like cats in my yard that are not my cats. They spray my yard, house, use my gardens as their litter boxes. I've tried tobacco, the spray stuff, moth balls, everything I can think of. What can I use? There is no leash law in my town for cats. The neighbors cats roam at will. They are dumb. What can I do?

A motion activated sprinkler system?  After they hop into an instant shower a few times, I think that they would decide to avoid your yard.

One (well actually it's a few) big difference between Nyx and your Jack vs. our Jack is toe quantity. Our Jack is poly, he's got these HUGE mitts! This is an oldie (from last summer) but it's one of the best we've got of Jack and all his toes. That's his brother Cisco next to him, they're both wondering where that dot comes from!

Had some tests done. Not normal but not gloom and doom either. Have to have more done in a week just to make sure everything is normal. That I don't care about, I'll deal. I've had to deal with worse before. What really sucks is that I had to have my "squirrel" put to sleep last night.

i1210.photobucket.com

I got Rocky when she was just a few months old, my uncle found her on the side of the road and she came to OSU with me. Our first year, we got to deal with riots and rats. Then my roommate and I said "screw this" and moved to a place off Bethel Road. Much nicer, shorter commute (which was strange because even though we lived in campus district the first year, it was quicker getting to school from our new place) and I think it was actually cheaper. This gal has gone through at least 5 moves in 11 years (if not more, I'm too lazy to count right now) but never fazed her. She was my Rocket J Squirrel

She was born with a malformed kidney and about 3 years ago, it must have decided to stop working because testing was showing only 1 functioning kidney and it too was starting to fail. Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism so we started on meds for that. A couple weeks ago, she started shutting down. She would no longer eat her food that her meds were mixed in. After fighting with her to take her meds, I decided it wasn't worth the war anymore. She resumed eating like normal. A few days ago, she stopped eating. I tried her favorite (Fancy Feast with the little shrimps in it) but she turned up her nose. When she wouldn't eat baby food, I knew it was time. She crossed the bridge last night, strangely enough, when Live's "Lightning Crashes" came on the radio at the vet's office.

This is the last picture I took of my squirrel.

Sorry, crappy cell phone pic. That and I was crying. She went from 18# in her prime to just under 6# last night.

Miss you Rocketta J Squirrel

as apposed to our Jack...

thx s.g. for capshun

Hello and Happy Caturday!  Great pictures and will vote later when it goes into that mode.  I'm very sorry to hear of all the viruses, please rest and take care and let us know how you are doing-we need you!!!  We have no animals, as they are all traveling to see friends in neighboring towns. Ekks, it will be so quiet around here. So I'll be looking for antics from your critters to fill the void!

Timid Goddess: kimwim: Here's a serious question.

That's a REALLY good idea.

How many of us have water bottles or water guns for our house cats?  Same idea, slightly larger scale.  Not sure how you would hook a motion sensor to a sprinkler system, and it would use less water if you can activate individual sprinkler heads instead of the entire yard.  Not sure if it would work for all the neighborhood cats, I'd think outdoor cats would not mind water as much as strictly indoor cats, but there the surprise factor is still there.

I think I've seen motion activated noise gadgets to scare off birds that might help as well.

After several years of putting it off, I finally made a dentist appointment for today.  I hate going to the dentist, but I could no longer put it off.  So I left work early to make sure to give myself plenty of time.  Hit every damn light as it turns red.  Then as I'm about to turn onto the last street I need...*bam* road closed.  Figure I'll go around the block.  Fine plan, except for the train that decided this was a good time to pull through town (seriously...the hell?).  And then I have the appointment and, hooray!  I get to have a root canal.  So there goes another couple grand that I don't need to spend.

The Ice Queen: So I am having a sucky week. Actually, I've decided that 10/10 is a dies niefastis for me.

Had some tests done. Not normal but not gloom and doom either. Have to have more done in a week just to make sure everything is normal. That I don't care about, I'll deal. I've had to deal with worse before. What really sucks is that I had to have my "squirrel" put to sleep last night.

[i1210.photobucket.com image 850x637]

The Ice Queen: DoomsDayAardvark: Oh gad, I need some cat time.  Today was crappy.

Sorry!  No insurance?

No, I've got insurance, but it's got an annual cap, which the treatment plan will more than exhaust (apparently, I should have just waited a couple more lousy months).  Final cost to me will probably still be around a thousand, though, after copays and balance payments.  Trouble is that it's a nasty enough root canal problem that I have to see a specialist.

The assistant said it'd probably have to come out, but the doctor said "hang on, it doesn't look that bad to me."  So there's that, at least.

/also need a regular filling.
//my children, if any, will be forced to brush at gunpoint.

Yep, I'm at CCC. We just did surgery on a bunch of kitties last Sunday so there are definitely new ones on the floor. I want to say enclosures 9 and 12 have the kittens and #11 has teens. We also have a gorgeous male there - black and long haired. He's also mitten pawed. He's an adult and FIV+ which isn't an issue as long as he's an only cat. Very sweet boy, loves to snuggle and get scritches. Hmmm, now I'm doing some thinking :)

OK, here is what I can come up with for pettable kitten therapy

PT - want to say he's in #1, very calm, likes to snuggle
Enclosure 9 - the swarm. They will literally swarm you for attention. There's one in there who has cerebellar hyperplasia (they think it was something he was exposed to in utero or shortly after birth) so he has some tremors but its funny to watch him go after the canned foods.
The black kitty teenage squad - various black kitties that are all around 6 months or so. They will swarm as well, definite attention whores

All of these guys are quite therapeutic, they have Purrrrrrh D's in kitteh petting therapy :)

The 5 I'm fostering right now and in their fuzzy demon spawn phase. Definitely helps you relax because you're too busy thinking "what are you doing/get down from there/do not bite your momma's tail/why are you hanging upside down from the futon/etc to really think about anything else :)

Cats are weird like that.  I remember several years ago, my parents had gone to a local craft fair, and bought a hand-made catnip pillow.  Well, when they brought it home, Nero (RIP 2012) went straight after it.  As he was slobbering all over it and rolling around on it and rubbing it all over his face, Archie (also RIP 2012, a few months later) came up and just sat there and watched.  Nero saw him, and rolled over onto his other side, putting his body between Archie and the pillow.  Archie wandered around to the other side, and just watched him for a few more minutes.  Then he glanced at my mom for just a moment.  Then looked at Nero again.  Then Archie pounced the old Maine Coon, who ran off hissing like a stoned steam-engine.  Then Archie took a turn with the catnip.

Nero and Archie team-mooching my mom for turkey scraps after Thanksgiving one year.

Apparently, being a stay-at-home mom is a total career crusher.  During a phone interview I had a really snotty woman actually ask me if I have EVER used a computer.  Really?  EVER???  Nooooooooo!  What are these mystical computer devices you speak of?  Then she asked me "Have you ever heard of Windows? It's a software".  I was a stay-at-home mom, not a dead head of cabbage!  The weird part is she was an HR generalist, interviewing me to be an HR generalist.  Normally, when doing a phone interview, you don't act like a condescending biatch.  The person you are interviewing may not be the person you hire, however, they may be a potential customer of the company you are representing.  Apparently, professionalism in HR went out of fashion since I last worked.
I did get her on her question of "How long is an employer required to keep employee records?"  I told her it depends on the records, which stumped her.  She asked "Just in general, how long do you keep the records?"  I told her there was no general answer as different records require different time lines.  Then I gave her an example of I-9 records, which is actually a formula based on when the employee was hired and when their employment was terminated.  She responded with "Um, I guess."  You don't guess in HR.  Guessing in HR gets your employer in trouble and you fired.

John Buck 41: Timid Goddess: kimwim: Here's a serious question.

That's a REALLY good idea.

Happy Caturday, everyone!

No new pictures of the Starbucky puppy this week, but plenty of photo evidence that Onyxia and Spitty are the epitome of so farking helpful.

First, Onyxia decides to go on a fast food binge without inviting me (not that I have the extra calories in my diet for it, but still...):

img.fark.net

Then, she decides to "help" with the laundry:
img.fark.net

And then Spitty takes over my desk. To the point I'm having to shove her kitty butt out of the way to use my mouse.

The Ice Queen, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It always hurts when we have to let go, but that Rainbow Bridge everyone's always talking about? That's Bifrost. (Really! Look it up!) When Heimdallr sees a cat coming across Bifrost he points the way to Fólkvangr, in the middle of which Freyja's hall Sessrúmnir sits. The cat will run past the Einherjar practicing on the battlefield of Fólkvangr, and leap through the doors of Sessrúmnir and Mandu and my Mr Marmalade and Ashley and all the other cats will be there, sitting at Freyja's feet and on her lap and running all around the hall. Lady Freyja will give Rocky words of praise for being such a good cat and tell her that for her fearlessness through all those moves and how valiantly she fought for so very many years, for her loyalty to you, her dearest friend, she can pull her chariot some time, or just watch the Einherjar or maybe just rest on her lap. She earned it, so that's where she'll be.

No, it is not. I love the old lore about Odin leaving Asgard (and you know he had to cross Bifrost unless he hitched a ride with Thor) and coming to Midgard as wanderer. There's even a Candlemass song about it, though they Christianized it. Kinda what happens when you mix very strong cultural lore with another very strong cultural lore that wants to be everyone's lore. They get each other kinda messy.

Oh! We started getting our Halloween decorations up last week, so I'm eagerly awaiting the annual Chick Tract left on the table by my front door about how I'm a witch and worshiping the devil and when I die I'll has a sad and wonder why didn't I just listen to the hate speeeeeeeeech???. I know it's the people in the house on the corner, because they're very weird, in a religious way. When the black clad middle aged Heathen skate rat who thinks blackened death metal is the BEST MUSIC EVAR thinks you're weird - you have such serious issues you may want to start using recreational resperidol and Xanax or something. Because DANG.

They spray my yard, house, use my gardens as their litter boxes. I've tried tobacco, the spray stuff, moth balls, everything I can think of. What can I use? There is no leash law in my town for cats. The neighbors cats roam at will. They are dumb. What can I do?

I have never tried this but I have heard that citrus peel can deter kitties. Load up on grapefruit, oranges, lemon, lime, make some outrageous margaritas for yourself and place the peel around your yard.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: The Ice Queen, I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

Happy Caturday everbuddy!  Now on my 6th week of joblessnes after being canned from my last company.  The booze is more expensive at the same price, but when you only eat about a third of what you once did, it doesn't take that much drinkiness to to get you dru... err, cheered up, I mean.

Postscript - Just found out last night that the same co. that fired me just laid off 6 more employees.  These were long term workers that actually did their jobs right (unlike me) so now there are a whole lot more people pissed at that place.  Will the fun never cease?

lilyspad: Real Women Drink Akvavit: cynicalminion: that bridge isn't a one-way street...  *headBOOPs*

You haz a mail.

I wore all black to work the other day and this one librarian (in her 70s? just guessin') came over and asked if I was dressed up as a witch. Thankfully I was on the phone helping someone and I could get away with whispering "No" to her. But iz ok. I'm a bit used to it by now. :D

Candlemass are pretty good. Saw them live once back in.. 2008? Met my best friend later that year in San Antonio in line for the bathroom. "Hey, nice shirt! I saw them in Fort Worth!" "Really, I was there too!" Just like that. :)

Sal the Cat summoned for jury service... and court rules he 'must attend'

A pet cat has been summoned for jury duty - and has been told by courts he 'must attend'
Despite owner Anna Esposito's protestations that a mistake has been made, a jury commissioner has ruled that Sal must attend the court.
She wrote that Sal was 'unable to speak and understand English' - and included a letter from her vet saying that the animal was a 'domestic short-haired neutered feline'.
Not guilty, your honour: Sal has been summoned for jury duty from March 23 - and his owner has been told he is not exempt from serving
i.imgur.com
Amazed: Sal's owners Anna and Guy Esposito are preparing to take their pet to court after a jury commissioner turned down their request to have the animal exempted from service
Bizarrely, the court ruled the animal must report to the courtroom. If the matter is not resolved he will have to report to Suffolk Superior Crown Court in Boston, U.S. on March 23.
Anna wrote her Sal's name under 'pets' on the last census - she crossed out 'dogs' and said he was a cat.
She said: 'When they ask him guilty or not guilty? What's he supposed to say - miaow?
'Sal is a member of the family so I listed him on the last Census form under pets but there has clearly been a mix-up.'  There's more, but I not fetching  UC by date this 2.7 yr old tail/tale

And a picture of Simon from a few years back.

i4.photobucket.com

A frat boy originally named him "Dude." We three could not let that stand so Simon it was. Oddly enough before this I was given another frat cat (ha) named Dude, which was a girl. That name stayed, as did the kitten, until frat guy wanted her back. I still regret not keeping her. She had been found by campus police when they raided a dorm room. All they found was the kitten + the smell of pot. They were forced to re-home her so I took her home for Christmas break and then took her back with me when spring semester started. I wasn't allowed to have a cat either.. but did anyway. Simon was a dorm cat too, though the RA caught us with him during finals right before we had to move out. Didn't get in trouble, though was told we'd be charged for a deep cleaning. Don't know if that ever happened.

Boobus needs some prayers, light, good vibes, whatever ya's got.... Our buddy has been with us for around 6.5 years, came in as a stray. When we took him for his first exam, we were told he's FIV+, so we knew up front that his odds weren't good. We were aghast when the vet asked then if we wanted him put down! With a face like ^THAT^?

Anyways, he's been healthy as a horse and happy as a clam since the day he came home with us. Until this week. Wednesday afternoon, I get a panic call from Mrs. vudutek; Boo is bleeding from his mouth. I come home thinking he lost a tooth or something, but noooooo, anything but. We rushed him to the vet. Found he has a lesion on the roof of his mouth that has apparently made contact with a blood vessel. They got the bleeding to stop, gave him antibiotics and steroid injections, and we brought him home. Took 2 hours to clean up the bllod from the carpets.
Yesterday the bleeding started again (not as bad), but back to the vets. They gave him a round of sub-q, and we got some soft food and syringe to keep him fed. Oh, did I mention he hadn't eaten or drank any water since this started Wednesday? So, we've been giving him his feedings every few hours, he's just been resting on the floor beside the bed.
This afternoon, he started bleeding again. Bad. This time, he must have ingested a large quantity. I was watching when he appeared to be heading to the litter box. Halfway there, he threw up a HUGE mass of blood / food / ?, He then collapsed in the mess, gasping for air. Off to the vet again for another round of sub-q. The only positives we have from the vet is that his temp is good, so 1) no fever) and 2) not in shock, which would show a drop in temp. Vet says to keep him comfy through the weekend, and give the steroids some more time to work. Even so, we know the writing is on the wall at this point, and we're devastated. We knew the FIV would eventually be an issue, but this was so sudden, it'shiat us like a ton of bricks.

tl;dr: sick kitty needs a miracle.

I'm sure this lizard is gone now.  The ones on my patio are quite small now.  I am getting pretty good at saving them.  This week Louie had one in his mouth, carrying it around by the tail.  I know better that to yell 'LOUIE DROP THAT LIZARD' cause he will.  I waited till they were in a room where I could get the lizard before it went under furniture.  I got the lizard, Louie got the tail (till I threw it away).  Another successful lizard relocation.

DoomsDayAardvark: Oh gad, I need some cat time.  Today was crappy.

/sigh
//needs to pet a kitten or something
///kitten shortage

Cost aside, root canals aren't bad in themselves (I've had two.) It's all the stuff that leads up to them that hurts.
Hope you feel better soon.

/yes, I'm sure there's a kitten in your future.

Dude, no. Just, no. Look, I was just going to light something for myself, but I'll toss in some words for Boo. He needs them more than I, and so do YOU and the rest of your family. So I hope you don't mind the token Heathen giving a small offering for comfort and, if possible, healing. They both made it to 17, although Regi probably should have only made 16.  Still conflicted about that all these years later.  Lesson is when you think it's time, it probably is.
Regi was the first dog that was my dog right from about 8 weeks old, Ti was about 8 years when she arrived, her previous humans had a baby and couldn't cope with both.

Regi was sweet to EVERYTHING, even tried to make friends with a mouse once...  Ti was sweet with humans, (loved to sleep UNDER the covers where it was really warm.)  but anything smaller and furry, it was like the shark eyes rolled back in her head and it was all instinct from there...  Jack Russles were bred as ratters after all...
