How do you figure. Be specific. Try not to cite Daily Caller, Breitbart, Newsbusters or Fox News.

Mr. Griffin, the Arkansas Republican, said that the plan the speaker presented appealed to him because it would give House Republicans some breathing room as they continued to try to plot their next steps.

"We can't even contemplate putting our full faith and credit, our credit rating and our financial system at risk, and this makes that clear," he said.

House Republican leadership aides said the Nov. 22 date was picked to coincide with the Thanksgiving recess to add pressure on both parties to come to a compromise. But with so little time, Mr. Boehner conceded, "You could end up back in the same place."

Obama chose wisely.

The plan was apparently to pass a short term bill to make themselves look good, then get Obama and the Democrats to the table to negotiate, lay out ridiculous demands while giving up nothing, and then turn around to spin it as 'The Democrats won't negotiate! This is their fault! We passed the debt ceiling like they asked and now they won't give us everything!' and unfortunately that argument might play with less informed (or more infromed) people.

No just desperate. It was a good attempt on their part. They played with fire and now they're getting burned.

Sure, let's go with the empty thread.

This was hardly the "clean" debt limit bill Boehner said it was. If he really wants to get the debt limit off his back, he should pass a clean bill in the house, then dare the Senate not to pass it, or Obama to veto it. Of course, he doesn't actually want that, because it's still useful as leverage to him.

Ok, so it's "poison pill" to try to prevent this situation from happening again and again and again.  Basically to Obama, anything short of putting the pedal to the medal on spending issues is akin to being a terrorist.

...AND since Obama believes that, the majority of FarkProgs believe it too.

Just laying it out there so I know what I'm dealing with.... that's all.

If there's one thing to take away from this mess, it's that the Republicans consistently and egregiously overestimate their own cleverness. They must've been sure that Obama would see them waving the white flag and call it off without noticing that the other hand was still holding the detonator.

Here's what the problem is: It's that Teahadist "Republicans" live in some kind of fairy world of their very own:

A large faction of Tea Party conservatives campaigned on promises never to vote to increase the nation's debt limit, and say they do not believe the warnings - including from Republican business allies - that failing to act could provoke a default and economic chaos globally.

Translation: It doesn't matter what anyone says, we're going to believe our own reality EVEN IF IT KILLS EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU.

It's hard to negotiate with people who hope the country fails especially if they can help it fail from inaction.  I think they are hoping we completely default so they can skim off the big pile of money no longer outgoing.

Let's look at the long-term implications of this. Both parties have been loathe to implement changes to damage something they could do when the end in the minority/take power. That's why neither party has gotten rid of the filibuster - they want that for when they're out of power.

With this, the GOP seems to believe that it will control congress for a long time. But, too, that it won't control the presidency with a democratic congress. Has the GOP decided that the electoral imbalance favoring the democrats is likely to result in multiple democrats in the presidency, while the GOP can hold onto the House thanks to their domination at the state level?

Or are they just short-sighted? Seems unusual given they didn't get rid of the filibuster 10 years ago.

2013-10-10 07:53:25 PM
All the democrats should be doing is saying Hostage Demands directly into the camera for the next 3 days.

The good news:  We now know they're terrified of losing if there is a constitutional crisis.  They think they'll lose it, so they want to take it off the table.
