What, you couldn't just add a measly 50 tons to make it to an even 1,000,000 pounds?  Talk about a bunch of small thinkers.

Too bad they'll only ever sell them to the Russians because nobody else in the world would want to buy anything from Belarus.

I would imagine they deliver it in pieces on flatbed trucks and do the final assembly on site.

What the hell do you need this to haul?

They are 3D printed at the customer's site. Of course, getting the 4,700bhp, 75ft long, 36ft high and 550 ton 3D printer there is a problem.

You now, those "standing next to the truck" pictures never REALLY make it sink I now big these things are, we had a Komatsu facility down the street from my last job, and it finally sunk in...

1. I drove by and they were working just on the dump bed of a truck, there was an extension ladder in the back so that they could climb up on the horizontal part at the top. This ladder was fully extended, probably at least 15 feet, and it barely reached...

2. One day, coming back from lunch, they had half empty highway sure down, 3 full lanes, had police motorcycles rolling up and stopping at the stoplights(it's a highway thru town), to stop oncoming traffic like they do for funerals and such. They had a flatbed truck carrying one of else dump trucks on the back, without tires, and it still took all 3 lanes and part of the shoulders...

And those trucks aren't anything compared to this puppy...

Drag line shovels like that are exactly why mining companies need big dump trucks. Even the behemoth in the article would be filled in a couple scoops.

The Gunslinger Roland: What, you couldn't just add a measly 50 tons to make it to an even 1,000,000 pounds?  Talk about a bunch of small thinkers.

They could, but it would be wasteful. The excavators everyone uses have a bucket of 90 tons capacity. Most of the biggest current trucks have a capacity of 360 tons.

90 x 4 = 360
90 x 5 = 450

Exactly.  Mining operations match bucket size and truck size to keep them as efficient as possible.  When you pay $25 million for a shovel and down time cost you a few million per day,  you are not wanting it to use 1/2 scoops to fill trucks.

Lol@5 million lb/ft- but it reminds me of my biggest pet peeve when reading or watching journalism about huge machines. They *always* mention the horsepower for big equipment, but rarely mention the torque figures, despite the fact that huge machines will make WAY WAY WAY more torque than hp. In the History documentary about the Emma Maersk, they mention the 100k hp. What's 100k next to 5 million? Why downplay it?

/i wanna know how much torque that motor makes
//if you give me the hp numbers give me the rpm so I can figure it out myself

I agree, torque is often overlooked, but many people don't know what torque is, but to be fair, many people don't know exactly what horsepower is either.  Still, five million lbs/ft at 102 rpm is pretty crazy.  Also interesting is that apparently 102rpm is the redline for that engine, and that it exceeds 50% thermal efficiency, that's pretty impressive.

What's strange is how shallow the depth of the bed is..  You'd think it would be deeper to carry more

styckx: What's strange is how shallow the depth of the bed is..  You'd think it would be deeper to carry more

I initially thought the same thing, but it has a much wider track than a traditional dump truck.  Increasing the depth of the bed with that track would likely overload either the tires or the motor that has to raise the bed up to dump.

Sadly, due to the EPA enforcing the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (which states that all equipment must be removed from reclaimed strip mines)  they had dismantle the machine in 1999,  the only thing that is left of it is the bucket:
