And yet year after year, they manage to mould magnificent players from their farm teams, and end up playing ball in October. Go Birds!

/love the fact that they told Pujols to take a walk when he asked for more money.

It's not the players people hate.

It's the fans.

If he wants to criticize the fans, he should say "The Cardinals' fans are farking awful" and not "The Cardinals are farking awful." It's a typical lazy shortcut that you always see in sportswriting and it is not true.

Fail. I love Cardinal's Fans.

The first day I got to St. Louis I went to a ball game at the old Busch Stadium, and some lady asked me to sign up for a credit card to get a free Cardinals toy. This was 1) when that was legal and b) when I was too young to know better.

Well, earlier in the day, she was giving out hats, and I wanted one, but by the time I got around to signing up, she was out. I had a whole convo w/ her about how I had just moved to St. Louis for work, and this was my first day, and how much NICER the ball park was than Fenway, and huge Sox fan, etc etc

She didn't have any hats, so I walked away. In doing so, a man came up to me, and said "I heard your story. Welcome to St. Louis" and handed me a brand new Cardinals hat he had just bought. To a stranger.  For free.

He accepted my thanks, but wouldn't accept money, a free beer, or anything. He just thought it was a nice thing to do.

Combined with the absolute grace the fans showed to Red Sox fans in 2004, I'm going to say that they are my FAVORITE fans in baseball. Far more than even Sox fans, who are often douches.

It's pretty much what the guy wrote. That's how a lot of you are.

what_now: Fail. I love Cardinal's Fans.

First off, I did take the Cardinals t-shirt, and I was shocked to find that you had to pay back what you charged, but that's neither here nor there.

I'm not saying they're bad people, I went to school in St. Louis, all my best friends from college are Cardinals fans, but they do see themselves as...somehow superior to all other fans. I understand that that's part of being fan, but they take it overboard at times. They refer to themselves as the best fans in baseball, that's pretty douchey.

That's the weird part...I've never ever ever ever referred to myself as one of the best fans in basebal, nor ever heard it from my friends/fellow fans.  That's usually tacked on by Mike Shannon or some other sound byte generator.  We're a pretty humble bunch, just out for a good time.
I'm not saying there aren't douche cardinals fans.  This is a fairly large city after all, but in general I've seen more good than bad.  Hell, even our rivalries are pretty friendly.  I've had a cubs fan buy me a beer after some friendly banter.

Best fans in baseball: 8k followers. STL cardinals: 500+k followers. Most cards fans don't have that elitist attitude if you're using twitter as a metric.

WTF Indeed: The 2009 cardinal draft is perhaps the greatest draft in the history of baseball.

Shelby Millier, Matt Carpenter, Joe Kelly. Great draft, to be sure. Amusingly enough, though, if you look at the combined WAR of players drafted, that's not even the best draft of 2009. Granted, that's mostly because of how insane Mike Trout is.

When LaRussa and McGwire were coaches, it was the coaches, too.

They'e a storied franchise and like all "storied" franchise teams, Red Sox, Yankees, etc., their fans are a bit douchy, it comes with the territory.

Dodgers players seem funner somehow

2013-10-10 07:03:47 PM
For a long time I thought the WORST fans in baseball were Cubs fans because every time the Cubs were in town and I went to a game there would be a drunk Cubs fan telling everybody within earshot how "Yer not basheball fans yer jus' a buncha, a buncha, yer not REAL basheball fans 'cause you, you don' you didn't have to wait yer not REAL basheball fans, not REAL 'cause you think you got it rough, you don't know..." ad nauseam.

But nowadays I'm leaning toward the Braves fans with their groaning and chopping. That gets old really fast Braves fans.

It's not a pejorative for being awful. It's a pejorative for loudly and visibly making sure everyone knows you are a super  upstanding guy but trying to do it in a horribly smug, humblebrag fashion.

And it's not really the Cards themselves (despite the headline), its the fans.

I am the poorly disguised Yankees fans in ugly Christmas sweaters carrying a Jell-O mold to your neighbor's door.  I grew up mimicking the Whitey Herzog flat top.  I like clydesdales and Ozzie Smith when he did backflips. I drink Bud Light and like the taste.  This is all true.

But I guarantee I'm a better baseball fan than the Chicago Cubs/White Soxs fans I live next to.

If he'd accepted a 5- or 6-year contract, the Cards might have paid him ~$20 mil a season.  But they knew he was looking to have his bases covered; so that might be evidence of their negotiating skill.

Most Cubs "fans" are the most baseball-illiterate people I've very known and seem to be "Cubbies" fans as some sort of fashion statement. Most of them should never be taken seriously.
