(Joystiq)   Russia to produce "patriotic" games, and ban ones that "distort history". I for one look forward to seeing Putin single-handedly defeating Hitler while riding a unicorn   (joystiq.com) divider line 36

Dufuq? Is that supposed to be Glenn Danzig riding Henry Rollins? Someone was not in their right mind when sketching that...

So I guess the original Call of Duty, where in the Soviet chapter you start at Stalingrad with nothing more than a single rifle reload running towards German emplacements is out of the question?

/I know it largely copied Enemy at the Gates, but it was one of the more powerful moments in my videogame history

Then what do you do with games about Stalin and his patriotic distortion of history?

It all happened in real time.

Unicorns you say? I saw these in a bookstore in 2007. I had to buy them.

If anyone's interested, there are a LOT of these associated with communist Russia, especially Stalin:

Stalin had a ... thing about his political enemies... existing.

Not that it's limited to Russia, they were just the pioneers at being completely farking blatant about it.  A lot of the official photos they released that were supposed to be totally legit were the kind of thing a modern high-school idiot might cobble together in photoshop in five minutes from spite today.

IIRC, Russian media has been up in arms over this for months, due to Company of Heroes 2 portraying the Russians in WW2 as cartoonish supervillains who make the Nazis look good. They tend to get a bit of kicking in video games as it is (they're the bad guys in at least half of all modern shooters), I'm not surprised they're finally getting upset up over it.

That means they're cool with S.T.A.L.K.E.R, right?

American companies would never do such a thing!

Maybe the Russians can develop a game where you shoot gays and sell underage girls into prostitution, before you die of hepatitis and cirrhosis at 35.

I'd expect to see that airbrushed on the side of the Russian equivalent of a 70's van.

So that explains why the Soviet planes are so unrealistically powerful in War Thunder!

2013-10-10 11:13:03 PM
Hell, I'd watch that. It'd be less depressing than our real government, right now.

Wow, that's sad. I liked Battlefield 1942 it was well balanced. If the Russians wanna make some good wargames as long as they don't have spyware or drm, maybe have some English language options I would buy them.

Don't you mean "give everyone who retreats some cake and persuade to return with wise words"? True (hi)story

I want a "patriotic" american game where I get to play an american soldier that mows down scores of unarmed starving injun men, women, and children after telling them we're relocating them to a "nicer place."

Nobody's banning or retconning anything.

It's just an incentive like how many Western countries offer tax breaks to game companies if they make it in such and such a state/county/whatever. And to be fair, there's a lot of Russian history where they kick ass. I'd love to see some historically accurate games.

Sadly, no major developer has been approached or anything yet so nobody knows exactly where this is going.

Wait, there are video games in Russia?

Thought the only game they had would be Tapper, but with vodka.
