Pushed by winds? A 70mph wind can drag a frozen cow carcass through snow?

From TFA: Making things worse, because the government is currently in a partial shutdown, ranchers are unable to ask federal officials questions about how they might be reimbursed in the future.

"A lot of the government agencies that we would normally be turning to for those answers are furloughed," she said. "So there's this sort of timing issue that's enhancing the frustration out there in cattle country."

Wait, you mean these farmers can't pull themselves up by their bootstraps?  Confronted with limited government, they realize that they don't actually like it?  Say it ain't so.

Cattle lay dead and frozen in the ditch along Highway 34 east of Sturgis, S.D.

Gas up the reefer, boys.  We've got some beef to score.

Maybe the bootstrappy fiercely individualistic ranchers who graze their cattle on federal lands would have used some kind of government program, like the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE and anticipated a storm killing their animals.

Darwin weeds out the stupid.

Just don't be begging for taxpayer money from Uncle Sugar, you Fierce Individualists!

One can only hope this sort of disaster keeps on a commin'.
Until The GOP Base gets a good dose of IRL, they will just go along with the train wreck.

I am guessing that most of this beef was going to Japan anywho.

And if those stupid cattle would have anticipated this early winter storm and grown their winter coats out earlier they would have been just fine.  Guess Darwin weeded them out as well.

/I'm from a cattle/ranching family and I feel very bad for the cattle here
//it's obviously more fun to make this a partisan issue than have compassion for the animals that suffered though, right?

Most all my compassion is busy with the dying middle class.
But, I will consider it.

Such a HARD choice.
Die by brain crush or freeze to death???

What would you do?

BTW, there is not a great deal of suffering in freezing. Been up close and personal.

Sorry, but since this current Punch an' Judy act is for money, I skip the foreplay.

Hold my beer,
You know who else made big political news, emotional waves and moved the flags over a mass death in some schoolhouse out East?

That blizzard was pretty hardcore. I recently moved into the area (Spearfish, SD). Here are some pictures I took during/after the blizzard. BTW, the car is a Subaru Forester (for size reference).

It was 3 days until the roads were cleared so we could go anywhere. The damage to the trees was substantial. It doesn't surprise me at all that some of the herds took some losses. That was one of the more intense blizzards I've seen in my life (grew up in Michigan and have seen plenty of blizzards).

I'm going to guess there's more suffering in freezing than there is in a bolt to the brain.  I've been up close and personal as well.

I spent a few summers working on a cattle ranch in Wyoming. The rancher's wife told us that during the winters it would get so cold that the cows' noses would freeze and fall off their faces. I thought that was kinda rough. Then I read this.

Yeah, my lower back is still a little sore from shoveling the snow.

It didn't really get that cold. It just snowed... and snowed... and snowed... a LOT. Obviously it was cold enough to die from exposure, but really it was the depth of the snow that was a major issue. Also, this was the most snow this area has gotten in October since 1919.

I wonder how many tatanka died...

This is some Little House on the Prairie shiat right here. Did they find little school kids who got caught in the outhouse and got snow blind in the 50 feet back to the school house, frozen in a haystack?

RelaximusPrime: I wonder how many tatanka died...

Probably none. They stand facing the wind, and will dig through the snow for food. Cattle will face away from the wind and will walk until they fond shelter. I don't know if you've ever been to South Dakota, but they might have to walk a long way.

I am sure they already bought it.
The AGW camp did warn you that this would happen, actually they have subrogated all natural disasters at this point.
All weather is caused by AGW.

Lemme whip out this chart,,

/now where did I put the instructions for building a glacier?

How do know that they are freezer burned? Seems like they would still be fresh.
It said "a Friday blizzard". Which Friday?

I'd carve em up to be sure. (Can't let it go to waste ya know.)
