That's just how a giraffe does it. When the baby hits the ground it accomplishes the same thing as the doctor giving it a slap. Hopefully they cut the cord before she walked back in to the hospital because dragging a newborn along on the ground by its umbilical cord is just wrong.

Okay, so now that we've had all these stories of women successfully giving birth outside hospital settings, can we quit pretending how dangerous it is?

Serious! When was the last time you heard of a mother dying because she wasn't in a hospital*, and you'd think the media would go nuts over  thatstory!

*places with a lack of hygiene or clean water need not apply. I'm talking about places where there *are* hospitals in the first place.

I also love this: Mrs Lopez was reportedly accepted into the hospital following her birth and released later that day.

It's Mexico. The attitude there is: "bummer. that poor indigenous girl... but they are used to it. They don't know any better so no biggie"

I have witnessed people who make their maids (servants) work extremely long hours doing hard, on your knees work, and not feel guilty because indians:

"are used to it"
"are very eager to please"
"had it much worse in their village"
"I'm paying them more than some people would"

My wife would have died if she had done home birth. Had some issues that led to bleeding, kid's heart rate went low they had to do C section and she spent 3 days in ICU afterwards.

Yes a majority of births are quick, simple and not at all dangerous. But 100 years ago a child or mother dying in child birth was not uncommon. Now it's extremely rare. I figure that makes it worth while to do things right.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_in_Mexico
Health care in Mexico is provided via public institutions, private entities, or private physicians. Health care delivered through private health care organizations operates entirely on the free-market system, i.e., it is available to those who can afford it. This is also the case of health care obtained from private physicians at their private office or clinic. Public health care delivery, on the other hand, is accomplished via an elaborate provisioning and delivery system put in place by the Mexican Federal Government. In 2012, Mexico achieved universal healthcare.[1]

You're missing the closed quotes that come on the next line. It's still within the same statement being made by whichever third party. :)

I was wondering who the photographer was myself. I mean, on the one hand, it's pretty horrible that you stand there and take a picture instead of helping the woman, but on the other hand it only took a second to take the picture and it might help other women in the future.
