One of the reps from CO put it well yesterday when he said there is no single GOP to meet with anymore. Boehner has lost control, he has Cruz et. al. who is on the attack for the ACA, he has Steve King and Bachmann advocating holy war, then a handful of folks who understand the outcome is already known and the rest is just grandstanding

Read elsewhere today that some counties in UT are losing $300,000 a day because the local national parks and monuments their economies depend on are shut down and it's gotten so bad they are considering "seizing" them and reopening them with local police and firefighters standing in for park rangers.

I almost felt bad for them until i realized that these are the same people that sent one of the chief mastermind of the Shutdown Sen. Mike Lee to Washington with over 60% of the vote in 2010 and will probably do the same in 2016 without a second's hesitation

Obama should walk into this meeting with 20 Republican with a bomb strapped to his chest. His offer: raise the debt ceiling until after 2014, clean CR for 12 weeks, and budget conference committee. Boehner et al. refuse and he blows them all to kingdom come and Joe Biden ascends to the presidency.

Well, one of their long-standing preferences has been for more State and Local power over Federal so them "seizing" them and taking control would be on that level.

It doesn't dismiss them being "pants on head retarded" but it does fall in line with their stated platform in the past.

Very loose use of "meeting" as well. Have some dinner, and then tell them how much of a failure they collectively are. "42 times you voted, and people still signed up for healthcare? AHAHAHA"

Well considering that PAUL FRICKING RYAN is the latest target or conservative ire as a RINO and sell-out, I honestly don;t think ANY negotiated solution is possible.  Boehner is just going to have to swallow hard, let the Dems bail him out by voting on a clean CR and debt-ceiling increase, and then, either resign his gavel or get out the long knives and bust every one of the trouble makers down to the Junior Member of the Committee on House Cafeteria Menus and Vending Machine Contents

I hate to say it, but I don't entirely disagree with what the Tea Party wants fiscally. They could gain my vote if they were demanding tax increases in addition to reducing government spending. That is what I think the Democrats should be proposing, to close the funding gap through high taxes. Then negotiate a strategy of moderate spending cuts and moderate tax increases.

So, Boehner is going to forbid the other 180 from showing up if they want?  What, he's going to stand in the door and tell them they aren't allowed in?  And those 180 reps are going to let him, like he's got all their balls in a jar somewhere?  If that was my Representative, I'd be pretty pissed that they'd just roll over and take it.

He doesn't have to do anything, he can just let the economy crash. It won't be so bad, sure a lot of people will lose their job, houses, go on welfare, but they will still have health care. I say they should hold the line, no CR until they get a budget that takes in more funding than it spends and pays down the debt.

A lot of us would be on board with "cutting spending" if they weren't so completely farking unreasonable about it all the time. Reduce spending? Fine. As long as you're willing to raise taxes on the rich, and cut the military's budget too. Then we can have a conversation.

I don't think that it is just that, though. I mean, Obama voted against it and later changed his opinion when he became president.

It has always been a partisan vote when available, I believe. But, even in split or opposite control congresses, it gets passed easily.

1995, 2011, 2013 are the top three times it was a damn near catastrophe. Democratic presidents and the GOP causing a scene.

One "small" problem there?
Taxed
Enough
Already

What they want, fiscally - is no taxes - ever
Not only will they not demand tax increases, they firmly believe the rate should be lower.

Boehner has stated - just days ago - increase in revenue is a non-starter for any negotiations.

If I were Obama I would just start calling meetings with the other 180. What the hell are  Boehner and Cruz going to do?

Get these other reps in a room 20-30 at a time and just flat out ask them "Is this really what you want? I'll work with you and give you some spending cuts you can take back home on a banner but you gotta show me you have at least a glimmer of intelligence and honor left in you."

Depends if Boehner picks the Teabaggers.  My impression is that he's not their biggest fan.  I'm sure the big-name jackasses are going to be there, like Cantor, Kevin McCarthy, and Paul Ryan, but there might be some of the more mature politicians who know how to make a deal.

That said, I just skimmed through TFA and I don't see any mention of "20 hand-picked reps" or who they might be, so I'm not sure how accurate that headline is in the first place.

Wouldn't it be awesome if the Democrats agreed to a debt ceiling increase and 2014 FY budget continuing resolution that had numbers close to what the GOP Ryan budget originally proposed...something below the $1t figure...

You know, something in the $990b range.

Man, that would be a huge concession by the democrats.

The Taxed Enough Already party exists solely to advocate for tax and spending cuts (and to give embarrassed Republicans a place to hide until everyone forgets about the cluster that was the Bush presidency.) What you say you want, moderate tax increases and moderate spending cuts, is the Democratic party position, at least when the economy is not in the shiattter.

I feel like the bolded information getting mentioned should invalidate any point being made before or after. While the country was upset with Bush's wars in 2006, they weren't being held hostage within the government while still recovering from a recession. That's kind of like bringing up a certain someone's alleged Native American ancestry...

Then it pleases me to inform you that you and the Teabaggers aren't  that close together in intent. Consider how many Representatives have had to sign Grover Norquist's or other pledge cards, claiming that they will never vote to raise taxes. They want nothing but spending cuts, and if it turns out that the government can only support the military- and prison-industrial complexes on whatever revenue they  do manage to collect, so be it. You may both want a balanced budget-that's responsible-but you don't want to get there by holding revenue at its lowest point in fifty years and slashing the existing government (and what few safety nets are left) to the bone  and then dig out the bone saws-that's nihilism.
