The perennial terrible Jags knocked off the Colts more than once in Manning's tenure.  I doubt he's fooling around with anything at this stage in his career.

Still, that press conference was an acting job deserving of an Emmy. No one really thinks the Jags are a good team.

Manning stood before reporters and said that the 0-5 Jaguars, who have been outscored by double-digit margins in all five games, are going to be a tough opponent for the 5-0 Jaguars.

I'm with Peyton, my money is on the Jaguars.

if the Jags can sack Peyton for a safety, that'll be their "moral victory"

Sure, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated like an NFL team to the serious players in the game.  Doing otherwise gives an unnecessary weakness to the doubter (albeit likely a miniscule one in this case).

On a serious note, do you think Peyton spends 1 second looking at his opponents offense? The Jags can't score, but they are allowing the 10th fewest passing yards in the NFL. That's got to at least show up on his radar.

Why would anyone throw the ball against the Jags when you can get 4.9 yards per carry?

I don't understand why people act shocked that any athlete talks up his opponent.

First, they're professionals on the other side. Yes even the Jags. When you're getting ready to compete, even if you are in a position of strength, you don't taunt your adversary. Why give any extra motivation or insult their pride?

Second, what can you even say that would be truthful? "Well they're 0-5 so they aren't very good"...yeah that wouldn't be playing 24-7 on every sports channel and radio show in existence. We want them to be truthful but than turn it into a huge scandal if they actually do say something truthful.

Finally, crazy shiat happens. If Manning talks shiat about the Jags all week, then breaks his leg on the first snap and the Jags win, what kind of an ass does he look like? Any given Sunday and all that.

So he pretty much has no choice but to talk them up regardless of how bad they seem.

It really is every given Sunday.  No matter how bad the Jags have been, every guy on the team is one of the best in the world at what he does.  Peyton Manning gets the flu on Sunday morning and shiat can change.

When playing the Jaguars no one bothers to pass after one quarter, because they are up by 21.

"The Jags? Are they still in the league? I gotta be honest here guys, I've been hip deep into Grand Theft Auto the past four days. Have you heard about this UFO thing in there? Crazy stuff."

Why is everyone talking about how bad the Jags are?

Go Bucs. Two perfect seasons are within our reach.

2013-10-10 12:14:19 PM
Peyton is merely trying to cover the fact that Denver has no real defense. By saying this, he's giving the defense a break because the Jags WILL score on Denver's defense, mark my words. The linebackers are ravaged with injuries, the defensive line can't get any pressure on the QB's with any kind of consistency and it's Keystone Coppers in the secondary with fools falling over themselves and jogging after offensive players. The defense is a joke and Peyton is just trying to cover for them.

Does anyone else think it's conspicuous that Bailey decided he needed an extra week or rest for the Dallas game but is ready to play the lowly Jaguars? Bailey is past his prime, and is setting himself up to try to look good by making 'amazing' plays against the Jags. Truth is, he's over the hill and should look into being a safety ala Charles Woodson, but his pride won't let him.

All that being said, Denver can win any shootout with any other team in the league right now, and they know it, which is why the defense doesn't play as hard. Peyton will pull their fat out of the fire. This is the SAME exact scenario that Colts had for a decade while he was there: All offense, no defense. Offense gets you to the playoffs, Defense gets you a championship. As smart as Peyton is, I can't believe he doesn't know this, or conveniently ignores this irrefutable law of football.

"Team with a lot of pride" is damning with faint praise.

To pile on to this, the Jaguars are in the bottom quartile of passes thrown against them, and opposing QBs have a 103.9 rating against them.

It's just how Peyton operates.  He doesn't take any opponent lightly.  That's something to think about if you're tempted to take the 28-point spread on the theory that he'll take his foot off the gas.  (In other words: don't.)

AdamK: if the Jags can sack Peyton for a safety, that'll be their "moral victory"

Peyton has the second lowest sack rate all time and he's getting great protection this year. If the Jags can notch 2 sacks on Peyton, that'll be a moral victory. Meanwhile, Jacksonville has a bad defense and are starting a backup QB. Chad Henne isn't going to run up 48 points on the road, but he's got nothing to lose and a lot to prove. Final score 45-17. Peyton is done for the day shortly after half-time.

One thing to keep in mind is that Peyton doesn't like to sit down late in games, even if his team is way ahead. And if he's in the game, the starting line is also going to be in the game. This could get ugly...

What do you expect? Peyton's been around long enough and seen enough games lost because one team came in with a motivational edge. He's not going give them anything to rally around.

On top of that he knows there's a non-zero chance if losing to the Jags. Better to acknowledge their strengths and treat them like honest competition to minimize that chance.

I'd guess due to the conference rivalry.  Hard to make a post about the Chiefs/Broncos/Raiders without insulting one or both of the others.  For example, I almost wrote the above as "Chiefs/Donkeys/Al Davis' Special Needs Kids".

It's just more people biting on "news" stories they're fed. They do the same thing when some idiot reporter puts a microphone on some poor special teamer or backup and asks them if they think the team is going to win the Super Bowl and then runs with "PIGGERS PREDICT SUPER BOWL."

The media is such a joke and people still eat it up.

It's okay, the state legislature has a crowd control plan for angry and frustrated Broncos fans. Why do you think they legalized pot?
