So the population might recover some.  That would be a good thing.

Agree with Muta. I suggested to a coworker that Florida should shut down fishing for a year, and he almost had a heart attack. I don't know where all the Florida caught fish go, most restaurants serve tilapia. Groceries all sell it as we'll and some fish called swai and cod.

If they don't have a season this year, just think of the bumper crop for next year. YUM!

/love crab but hate the work it takes to eat it. You starve yourself shelling it.

Obama has instructed the government to do as much as humanly possible to hurt citizens. Pretty disgusting, but heh, shows the type of person he and his followers are. Amazing that private citizens, requiring no federal money, are not allowed to go about their business, and the Feds will actually spend money to force them not too, rather than just get out of the way.

Does this mean no Crab Fishing show on Discovery?  The shutdown did a good thing.

Oh come now, you say that as if we've fished several species to commercial extinction....

Sucks that crab fishermen have to rely on their little 4-day (or however long) window to catch as much as possible for their primary income, but the crab numbers after a skipped season would be interesting to see.

Oh and swai is a kind of catfish.  Endangered no less: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iridescent_shark

You must eat at some crappy restaurants and shop at some shiatty grocery stores.

Publix always has Mahi and Grouper in the case, and if you are coastal in FL there are plenty of fish markets where you can get redfish and snapper as well.

I've never had tilapia. It is a farm-raised freshwater fish that usual eats the other Tilapia's dung. No thanks.

Keep a pair of kitchen shears handy and just cut the legs lengthwise.

This kabuki "shutdown" theatre is simply grand. The clowns in DC and the media are all predictably in a frenzy, simultaneously attempting to blame either/both parties and dredging up lots of "scare" stories and warning us of how dire the situation is becoming with only *gasp*  87% of the government running, and yet, within my social circle, family, and Facebook friends, the "shutdown" is almost NEVER mentioned and barely rates a "meh" response. The public just doesn't care....and that's EXACTLY the way it should be. Beautiful!

Shutting down private businesses, just because they are on federal land, at gunpoint. Gotta love it. Blocking a road because it passes through federal land, making the local schools unable to bus kids on their normal route. Classy. Forcing a tour group of old people and foreigners out of a public park, at gunpoint, while yelling at them for taking a picture? Obama.

Glad to see your sense of humor remains intact.

fatalvenom, we do have several fresh fish markets in Gainesville. I have seen a lot of "off shore" grouper, mahi, etc. in grocery stores. Labels are quite revealing sometimes.
