So, people may die because of a bunch of privileged, pampered and greedy old farts in suits can't get their way.

We really put the worst kinds of individuals in power.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a warning over the outbreak, which is associated with raw chicken products.

Fully cook your chicken. There's your free market solution. Also, possibly sue (I assume the courts are still open) the producers of the tainted chicken.

The free market will naturally gravitate to the companies which kill the fewest numbers of children?

People are going to die regardless. Government can't save everyone from everything, no matter how much you hate republicans.

Not to be a spoil sport, but didn't this chicken ship before the shutdown?

Anyways, I liked the idea in a previous thread, which was to mail the tainted chicken to John Boehner's office

//Please don't. It is illegal to purposely mail infectious diseases.

It's not just eating the chicken that's the problem though. People chop up the chicken, forget to sanitize the cutting cutting board or knife, and then chop up the veggies for the salad. Now the salad is contaminated.

The invisible hand of the market is simply removing those who are deemed unfit to consume freedom chicken.

There is a popular microbiology experiment in which raw ground beef is left out overnight, and raw chicken is refrigerated, and the next morning the chicken has more bacteria growing on it than the beef.

In 2006 the FDA approved a mixture of six bacteria-killing viruses can be safely sprayed on meat and poultry to combat common microbes. They kill Listeria, E. Coli, and Salmonella, and they have other anti-bacterial viruses in development against Shigella and Clostridium.

I've seen worse. My Dad was barbecueing and after the chicken was cooked took some of the marinade, that the raw chicken had been soaking in for a day, and dumped it on the chicken. He even seemed pissed when everyone told him he had to put it back on the barbecue. Some people just have no common sense about this kind of thing.

On the list of people we should try to save, I'd put "people with cancer" at #1, and "people who died from eating raw chicken" somewhere around #5755

Provided you prepare the meat yourself, it's not all that dangerous. Steak tartare exists without killing too many people.

Buy your own cuts and grind your own meat - it's much safer that way. Store bought chuck is sickening, to say the least.

2013-10-09 04:47:15 PM
Cross-contamination is the real issue, not undercooking chicken. As other posters mentioned, it can be something as simple as not washing the knife you used to section the chicken that can make you very sick. It can be using the same tongs that you used to put the bird on the BBQ that you used to take it off. Whenever I am handling chicken, I remind myself that everything it is touched is very, very dangerous and needs to be washed. It has a way of sharpening your mind to everywhere that chicken has been.

This.

We eat crap and pay no attention until a bunch of people get sick.
If they get sick when some political event is going on, its party-X's fault instead of our own for paying zero attention to our food supply.

/Its everyones fault for not having a backup plan in case of emergencies.
/and for not noticing when inspection stickers are missing.
/and for not cooking properly.

Fully cook your food. EVERY one of those cases was preventable. Seriously. No eggs over easy. No redness to ANY chicken. Buy a $10 food thermometer. Ya know those with the long cords so while it is on the grill/in the oven you can see when it hits 165F

You don't even need both hands to count the number of unpreventable food illness cases yearly in this country

First world problems. You know, everywhere else in the world avoids tainted chicken by just waiting to slaughter the chicken until right before its cooked. Our industrialized food processing system sure is sweet....

Dear liberals and other utter morons: The US government shutdown DID NOT BRING ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF RESISTANT PATHOGENS. The vast majority of the evolution of the resistant pathogens was WHILE THE US GOVERNMENT WAS NOT SHUT DOWN.

I realize you are too stupid to understand this, but I still had to say it.

2013-10-09 05:07:02 PM
Defund about 50% of NSA, DEA and CIA employees, 95% of DoHS, and about 85% of all their contractors, and we'd have a start. Double the number of Park Rangers, USDA inspectors, etc. Programs that actually protect us and provide something for our tax dollars would suddenly be hiring.

Presumably the same way they deal with all other tainted meat products that somehow walk past the government inspectors, who are the only people never held accountable when that happens.

I totally agree, hey, your company put out a tainted product? You will have to take responsibility for that, but from the company, to the grocery store, to the shipping company, and everything in between... The only people who are involved in this process but never, ever, held accountable? The government inspectors.

LoneVVolf: FDA is deemed essential services and is not shut down. Non-issue.

Pretty sure they reversed that *after* the outbreak, but I could be wrong.

The real big issue isn't that the FDA/USDA could've prevented this, but that being shut down means they can't warn people about it. THAT'S the issue...
