I've done that play, and I have to say, it's probably a little too intense for high schoolers.

I too know the crushing weight of community censorship, I am producing braparella jr.'s elementary school production of Butterfield 8 and  getting all sorts of grief from the L7s in the PTA.

While it may seem controversial, it's important to constantly expand kids' horizons. To take their imaginations and stretch them open, with both hands.

I assume the rape and cannibalism were the real reasons, but the reason they gave was the swearing. Which made us laugh.

I don't consider Sweeney Todd thematically any darker than many of the assigned summer reading books, anyway. The rape isn't explicitly stated, and you can cut the judge's creepy song about Johanna without losing much (most versions cut that song as far as I can tell). They made us read plenty of books with rape and murder in them, but god forbid you want to do a play with those things in it!

I understand we need to allow high school kids to expand their minds.  But there are many, many better plays than this one from which to choose.  Sure, it won some awards, but when you look at what you're trying to teach young actors, it falls flat.

I'm not as concerned about the content (although it's really stupid) as I am about the quality of the play.

But then I'm from Alabama and see this sort of stuff happening in the parking lot of the local Wal-mart.

Pasiphaë

There is nothing to gain now by deceiving you;
what has happened is already too well known.
  But consider:
If I had sold the gifts of Kypris,
given my body in secret to some man,
you would have every right to condemn me
as a whore. But this was no act of the will;
I am suffering from some madness brought on
by a god.

    It's not plausible!
What could I have seen in a bull
to assault my heart with this shameful passion?
Did he look too handsome in his robe?
Did a sea of fire smoulder in his eyes?
Was it the red tint of his hair, his dark beard?
His body, so [different] from my husband's? [. . .]
Are these the things that drew me to lie
in his bed, in my cowskin [. . .]?
I did not imagine that my lover
could give me children [. . .]
What diseased my mind?

Have times changed.  Back in the 70's the movie  Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex but were Afraid to Ask had a part where a man (Gene Wilder) fell in love and had sex with a sheep.  Everyone laughed and thought it was funny.  Also, during the same era, the Monty Python characters dressed in drag and everyone laughed at that too.

Now if a guy runs around in a dress, no one seems to dare laugh at him because so many of them do it now.  I know that a lot of women (especially lesbians) like having sex with dogs and other animals, so that is no longer laughable and now neither is a guy marrying his goat.  Boy has comedy ever dried up in this country.

You can't even make fun of idiots because you will offend Congress and the president.

Sancho Panza (Mr Organs) spoilt an otherwise impeccably choreographed rape scene by his unscheduled appearance and persistent cries of "What's all this then?".
