Or are they.
It's called interspecies erotica

I've done that play, and I have to say, it's probably a little too intense for high schoolers.

I too know the crushing weight of community censorship, I am producing braparella jr.'s elementary school production of Butterfield 8 and  getting all sorts of grief from the L7s in the PTA.

While it may seem controversial, it's important to constantly expand kids' horizons. To take their imaginations and stretch them open, with both hands.

And my high school wouldn't even let us do Sweeney Todd because it had the word "shiat" in it.

Is much worse than Equis? We studied and performed parts of that in high school, and it wasn't even the most intense thing we did.

DNRTFA, but I'm speculating that this wouldn't be a problem if the school was in Indiana

They were okay with the rape and cannibalism though?

From Wikipedia: The tale of a married, middle-aged architect, Martin, his wife Stevie, and their son Billy, whose lives crumble when he falls in love with a goat...

I'll bet they don't call him Martin the architect.

I caught this play on Broadway several years back. I sat through the whole thing thinking that "the goat" was an allegory for something. It wasn't.

We couldn't do Grease, because "missed my last two periods."

Not kidding. That's how it is where Mormons are in charge.

I assume the rape and cannibalism were the real reasons, but the reason they gave was the swearing. Which made us laugh.

I don't consider Sweeney Todd thematically any darker than many of the assigned summer reading books, anyway. The rape isn't explicitly stated, and you can cut the judge's creepy song about Johanna without losing much (most versions cut that song as far as I can tell). They made us read plenty of books with rape and murder in them, but god forbid you want to do a play with those things in it!

I understand we need to allow high school kids to expand their minds.  But there are many, many better plays than this one from which to choose.  Sure, it won some awards, but when you look at what you're trying to teach young actors, it falls flat.

I'm not as concerned about the content (although it's really stupid) as I am about the quality of the play.

But then I'm from Alabama and see this sort of stuff happening in the parking lot of the local Wal-mart.
