They'd probably have better luck faking detractors. Easier to blend in.

I never really got all the hate, though. Sometimes, all you really want is some good Italian-American food, and Olive Garden fits the bill. I've got a good local place where I go when I want something more continental. But like the old jingle goes, "Sometimes you feel like a nut; sometimes you don't." There are times when I just want a smoked mozzerella fonduta and unlimited tasty breadsticks, and the OG fits the bill for that.

Here's my thing: Most of the time, I'm happy with "cheap and good enough".  I'm fine with Olive Garden (or Friday's or Chilli's or any of the other cheap chain places); I'm fine with Miller Lite; I'm fine with Little Penguin wine.  There are times when I want to spend a little more to get something good but the vast majority of the time, a $15 dinner at Olive Garden is fine.

Olive Garden is everything I hate about chain restaurants wrapped up one one package.  Bad service, too much salt, oversized portions, fake food, fake surroundings, shiat service, and overweight entitled customers who actually think they are getting a good deal on "authentic" italian food.  I die a little every time I'm forced to go there - usually for some stupid family function.  And not from the food.

Remember the old anti drug films where they showed the difference between spider webs spun by spiders on various compounds as opposed to a sober spider?

Reddit reminds me of the spider on acid.

I think a lot of the hate comes from the fact that it's more expensive to eat at olive Garden than at a legit place that uses real food and actually cooks. I would have no problem with olive garden if they were proceed similarly to McDonald's, but they aren't. They're firmly in the mid-tier price range, while offering what are essentially microwaved frozen dinners.

And what's worse is that people buy that shiat up. I think that's the main reason for the hate - the fact that going to an olive Garden means being surrounded for at least an hour by people stupid enough to actually believe they're getting good food at a good price.

You nailed it for me.  Back when the majority of OG pasta dishes were under $10, I was fine eating mediocre food.  Now those same dishes are often pushing $15+, yet the quality of the food and service is about the same.

For the same price, I can just go find a hole in the wall Italian restaurant and get something a notch or two higher.  Or I can just get off my lazy ass and make it from scratch in the kitchen.

Got dragged there by co-workers for lunch once. Never been before. The breadsticks were essentially unsplit hot dog buns with garlic butter and the soup (I think it was the gnocchi) was watery and tasteless. Nevertheless, the co-workers raved about how great it was and filled up as many to-go boxes as they could carry. Maybe they're victims of that "If you see a lot of ads on tv for a place, that means the place is really, really good!" thinking...

Dancin_In_Anson: Can someone PLEASE explain the allure of Reddit?

I personally like the interface much better.  Wading through submissions here one by one, serially, is fairly terrible.  The rating on comments is (generally) good there, with crap (generally) staying unseen at the bottom.  On fark, you have to see all the comments, even the trollish junk, and they are ungrouped in any way.  Now, the rating thing does generate a bit of groupthink, but it's really not that bad.  And I like that I can close an entire conversation on reddit.  Click the little "+" and the comment and all replies to it get hidden. Far easier to read a lot more comments once you get the hang of it.

There's far more content there than here, and it appears quicker. Fark will often have the same submission, just the next day (or three) after it's been over there (and everywhere else).  I also like that you can make your own subreddit.  And I like because of that each subreddit is different, with a different sort of "community".  For example, /r/guns is full of wildly different people than /r/rcooking and has a completely different vibe.  The diversity of subreddits are far, far more dynamic than fark's few tabs.

I like that you can pick and choose what subreddits you see on the front page.  I don't see any politics, funny meme gifs, etc. I've got some educational ones, some food-related ones, the gun one, and a few others.  Those are pretty much the only areas I frequent, and so the annoyance factor is pretty low.  On fark, you get the same old shut-ins in nearly every post, whining about the same tired things (and you can't easily hide said comments and their replies).  It's kind of rare for that to happen on reddit.  Each subreddit sort of takes care of its own members.

You don't have to pay to see all the submissions. You can filter out whatever you want.  Here people only get what's been approved.

Fark has far too many unmarked paid-for submissions, IMO. The never-funny cracked.com submissions come to mind, as does the prevalence of Daily Fail and a few others. Astroturfing submissions to reddit are discovered and rooted out pretty quickly.

You are right, though, in that it's user-controlled chaos. That's actually one of the things I like about it.  Also, no stupid shiat like the word filters here.  Those are so completely played out (though maybe I've been here too long).  Fark's comment system and submission setup just seems very, very old.

I still come here every so often, but I find myself at reddit more and more last couple years.
