(Politico)   In a spiteful move clearly aimed at Paul Ryan, House Democrats demand that a government shutdown that includes not paying Capitol police, or soldier's death benefits, should bloody well include shutting down the Capitol's gym and spa too   (politico.com) divider line 73

If Paul Ryan needs to go for a jog, he doesn't need the treadmill in a federally funded gym.

He's entirely welcome to go trotting through the streets of D.C. surrounded by naught but his fervent admirers.

I agree.  But I'm not sure there was a plan to keep this open but not fund cancer patients and such.

Yes, but where are the congress members supposed to shower when they've been sleeping in their offices instead of renting an apartment?

He should just jog for 26 minutes

Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by ignorance. I don't think they said "screw those guys, but I needs my gym" so much as they clearly didn't think this through at all (evidenced by their shocked faces when death benefits stopped).

The gym at my office is shut down permanantly because of sequestration cuts ;/ Now I've got nowhere to be in 26 minutes.

Well, it was scheduled to be closed but Boehner's office requested it remain open.

The staff gym was closed.

Surely you jest! Are you suggesting that some "the only good government is a dead government" types are living rent-free in a government building?

2013-10-09 02:34:51 PM
Paul Ryan is the trying to be the voice of quiet reason in all of this because he wants to run in 2016, but he is still and always will be an asshole who targets Medicare every chance he gets including CR or debt ceiling negotiations.

"We need to open the federal government. We need to pay our bills today -- and make sure we can pay our bills tomorrow. So let's negotiate an agreement to make modest reforms to entitlement programs and the tax code."
How about no? Does no work for you?

Does their gym have a "no lunks" policy?

2013-10-09 02:38:07 PM
Eva Malecki, a communications officer for the Architect of the Capitol, said: "When Members join the gym they are given key fobs that permit them to access the facility. The decision not to lock Members out was made because they keep personal items there

Why does this make a difference?  All the rest of the federal employees who were furloughed and are currently locked out of their offices probably kept some personal items in their desks.  And yet, they're not let back in.

Though...looks like it's in decline.

"In 2011, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington reported that at least 33 members of Congress -- 21 of them freshmen -- lived in their offices. Although a few Democrats have taken to sleeping in their offices, the practice is more popular with conservative members: Republicans made up 26 of the 33 representatives taking up residence in their offices, according to CREW."

The Capitol's gym and spa...I'm guessing that's a place where the pecking order has reached its zenith.  What the HELL do you think you're doing in this hot tub, junior congressman from Bumfark, Iowa?  This, and all else you see here, is reserved for the Lords of Mightiness.  There's a broom closet down the hall with one busted Chuck Norris machine and a barbell.  GO!

Frankly, we need to cut the death benefits (and military pay for that matter) too. I'm being completely serious. If these fools want to shut down the government, there should be serious consequences for doing so. I would just direct all those affected to contact their congressman to explain for the loss of benefits and pay and call it a day.

I really want to know the backstory to this picture.  Is there a company that takes studio style pictures with a weight bench and some random dumbbells?  Does Paul Ryan always dress like he's still a frat boy? What the hell is with that gesture? Who thought this was a good idea?

The difference is that the people on furlow cannot make any claims at doing work.  If you lock them out of telecomuter services and out of their offices they are less able to make claims of work.  Congress critters are not beholden to any claim of work.

It does not even come close to the bad idea that was the GQ photo of Schock (IL 18) being manhandled by 10 year old boys that were dressing in knock off Bears uniforms.

That's La Tigre, it's a lot softer. It's a bit more of a catalog look. He uses it for footwear sometimes.

No... he won't let congress vote on a clean budget bill because he KNOWS it will pass.

Also, voting on a clean bill doesn't fit with the Republican ideology of 'fark everyone else over'. If there isn't a screw over the poor/ethnic/non-christian/homosexual/etc angle to it, they're not interested.

After exempting themselves and their staffers from the ACA   financial consequences of Obamacare, and getting no heat from their supporters for that, why wouldn't they think that?

Actually, the truth is even more hilarious. In an interview, Ryan said his favorite band to listen to while working out was Rage Against the Machine. The band actually released a public statement basically saying "WTF??" aften the interview was printed.

They should be more bootstrappy instead of relying on government handouts.

Many Congressmen sleep in their offices and use the gym to shower. They are basically homeless.
