Aw.  I loved the books about this that I read as a child.  Misty of Chincoteague.

Oh well.

Yeah. they'll get over it.
If you swam ashore from a shipwrecked galleon and lived outdoors on the beach for a few hundred years, you're probably not going to die of shock if you don't get forced to have a shot this year.

FTA: "The pony swim was made famous by Marguerite Henry's 1947 novel "Misty of Chincoteague."

Made famous?? ... let's not get carried away here unfamiliar 65 year old novel from an authors less then 1% of people have ever heard of, much less read...

If this lasts, they might have to cancel Winter Wrap-Up

Don't kid yourselves. That's the kind of stuff that can generate grass roots resentment, where it might not have existed before.

Strange.  I don't think the Chincoteague volunteer fire company nor the other "saltwater cowboys" are paid by the US government.  Must have something to do with the Assateague Island National Seashore being closed?

I spend a week in Chincoteague some summers. It's a funny little town that makes a good chunk of it's money from the silly pony swim.

Too bad.

I mean, the pony population as a whole will be fine, but I'm guessing some individual ponies who otherwise would have made it will die from illness or something this year.

Ponies should get jobs if they want medical care, though. Mooches.

assateague is a national seashore, so I'm sure its shut down, but the ponies are owned by the chincoteague fire department.

/I as well have spent a great deal of time on the shore and island, but not during pony penning... shiats nuts then.

I read the Boxcar children too.  That series got me hooked on reading at a young age.

I have, I also need to be more carefull when posting from my phone.

to be a little.. cohearant about it all.. pony penning week in chincoteague is a tourist free for all time, I do not care for large crowds like that, so I try to stay away. another time however is lovely.

I can explain it in ten seconds flat. Equestria is modeled after Plato's Republic, and if you attempt to map that social structure onto a modern industrialized society, your get something like this. And that's how America was made.

Yeah 'cos you never heard of/read the book no one else has.

And FTA---The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company had planned to conduct its fall roundup on Assateague Island on Friday and Saturday.

How exactly does a government shutdown affect a volunteer operation?

Let's see...virtually all little girls and a substantial number of boys read books by Marguerite Henry.

Yes canceled bc we can't get on the beach. I live on Chincoteague which has a lot of tea baggers who don't want the government to do anything... except when they do. And always blame the other side.
/also next to NASA's Wallops Island which is mostly shut down.
/haven't read the book either

Well, that explains it.

I was there (staying on Chincoteague, working at Wallops) a couple of weeks ago.  BTW, what the heck makes the Fresh-Pride stink so much?  Is it decades of deep fried fish?  I had deep fried scallops at Bill's one night and it smelled similar, though fresher.
