Screens started out curved, then went flat, now curved is cool again. No thanks. I don't want a curved phone or TV screen.

Playing a game on a concaved phone would be great

This is what we call, "early adopter price." Don't feel bad, that $4,000 HD-DVD player truly was a marvel of modern technology.

2013-10-09 01:07:06 PM
To me it would seem to make sense to have the screen curved out, not in. Of course, that would tend to case more problems with breakage.
I guess they are doing a curved screen because, fark you, we can.

Changing the song by tilting to the left or right.  Perfect for when you're in motion.

Looks curved to fit into back pockets.... though that curvature looks a little large for the european model and quite a bit tight for the american model.

Is there a point to curved phones? Do they offer something that's useful?

2013-10-09 01:15:50 PM
If there was a reason for a curved screen on such a device, I could see it being useful.  But there is no reason for it.  Not a good reason, not a bad reason, no reason of any kind, other than to say "Oooo!  It's different because it's CURVED!"

Saiga410: Looks curved to fit into back pockets.

Step 1: Create ad that is merely a 30 second slow motion replay of either Kate Upton or Jennifer Lawrence sliding the phone into the back pocket of their pants

Step 2: Profit

Slaxl: Is there a point to curved phones? Do they offer something that's useful?

Nope. Unless it's a huge desktop monitor I can't imagine why a curved smartphone screen would be better than flat.

Which is exactly where I want my thousand dollar electronics. In the least secure, most wear-heavy pocket on me!

I would never want to work in that Call Center.  "You made the phone to fit in my back pocket, then when I sat on it, it broke.  YOU OWE ME A NEW PHONE!!!"

This particular product looks mostly useless. But the technology is still a step in the right direction. "Red Planet" like screens that unfold or unfurl would be great. It's nice to see they're still trying to take steps towards something new.

The high-end gizmo has some features that make use of the display's curve, such as playing the next song in a music playlist by tilting the phone to the left or to the right.

Ooh, that's awesome.   Pressing 'next' was such a CHORE.

I'm shocked by how many people I see with their smart phones in their back pockets.

It's a bit pricey for a feature that has no benefit to the user.

It's not curvy, it's FAT. Stop deluding yourselves.

For a thousand bucks, right now, you ought to get one with a roll-out flexible screen maybe 12x20 cm. There are also working fold-out reflective screens, although those are really fragile, but they look cool -- very much like Jason Statham's phone-thing in The One.

Flexible screens capable of full-motion color video have been doable for several years, but no one wants to abandon their LCD and LED factories just yet. Not so long as people will pay $1000 for this sort of thing.

The 64GB iPhone 5S is $919, at least in Canada. Just sayin'.

I was under the impression that OLED was still 5-10 years off being able to generate blue with any efficiency. This is form a chemist who spends his days researching how to make OLED generate the color blue more efficiently.

OLED screens are crap, and always have been.  the lack of a decent blue won't stop samsung from releasing the phone because they really don't care about quality.

The same phone (contract-free) is $849 in the US. After gas and customs fees, it would be the same or more for a phone I wouldn't want.

Dropping it will not scratch the screen, and fits in a pocket with curved thighs better.

Plus, there's a ton of features people go ga ga over with any number of overpriced devices / electronics / cars / fashion.  This is just one from Samsung.

Stupid comparisons are stupid.

Of course you can run up the price with the highest priced item.

That was just curved glass fused to the top of a flat LED panel. This has an actual curved LED panel.

Still don't see any real reason to get super excited about it. Interesting? Ok, sure.

Curved screen or curved Glass?
FWIW the Nexus S uses a flat screen with curved glass.

The Galaxy Round looks like a post-prototype based on the same chassis as the Note 3, without the S-Pen, but with the flexible screen tech.

The iPhone upgrades may not look different every year, but they are always typically twice as fast as last years model, with other upgrades as well. You know, stuff that matters. This is just a taco shaped phone for no reason, except that Samsung seems to need to release a new Galaxy phone every month now.
