She's not even attacking the whole of hip-hop, just saying that she doesn't agree with the focus on material possessions that come up on some songs by some hip-hop artists. That's not the same as racism. Lots of hip-hop artists have complained about that exact same thing, and conspicuous consumption has been a target of popular culture plenty of times.

There's plenty of legitimate racism out there. Don't cheapen it by squinting until you can misinterpret it into some element of popular culture. It's a disservice to victims of real racism.

It's a good song, that.  If you dig it, "Tennis Court" is better, I think.

A sixteen year old girl who can write decent lyrics and can sing without using autotune.  Can't have that.  Let's find an excuse to demonize her.

This... is CNN?

Obscure Login: Song - We can't afford the material items that major musical artists discuss in their songs and most likely never will but we still try to have a good time.

Veronica Bayetti Flores - Racist.

Me - *facepalm*

And we're done. I find it amusing that the author claiming racism equated "anti-materialism" to "anti-African-Americanism", because by doing so she, herself, unconsciously demonstrated her bias, that "only blah folks want Kristal and bling, and since she's against Kristal and bling, well, she's against blah people."

Friggin' moron.

Troy McClure: She's attacking the songs that have dominated the top 40 for the past ten years.  It's not racist when that's the music she's grown up with.

Bingo. The article makes a fuss about the fact that she's referencing hip hop songs specifically. Of course she is - she's 16. She and her friends grew up listening to hip hop; her song is about the disconnect between the music they like and their real lives. End of story.

The whole album is full of great hooks. I don't think there's been a new artist with such a distinctive voice in mainstream pop music in years.

I think it is more of a critique on the fetishization of accumulation rather than attacking a group of people.

What a bizarre farking world where a "feminist blogger" can cause such controversy over a pop song.

In other news, people who make it their business to see racism everywhere will see racism everywhere.

"'While I love a good critique of wealth accumulation and inequity, this song is not one; in fact, it is deeply racist,' wrote Bayetti Flores. 'Because we all know who she's thinking when we're talking gold teeth, Cristal (champagne) and Maybachs. So why s*** on black folks? Why s*** on rappers?'"

I think it's more racist to assume that all black rappers are in the "gold teeth and Cristal" set.
