FarkedOver: I think it is more of a critique on the fetishization of accumulation rather than attacking a group of people.

It sucks.

It has infected so much too.

LewDux: eddievercetti: Thrift Shop and Royale show us that rap isn't just MONEY CASH HOES.

What Royals/Royale has to do with rap/hip-hop?

From the lyrics, I get she's going after the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

Are they just now getting to "Royals?"  That song is about as old as Yoko Ono by now..

And not really attacking it, just basically saying, "We're not rich like that, and we're okay with it". These are the whole lyrics:

I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address
In a torn-up town, no post code envy

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your time piece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, (I'll rule I'll rule, I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy

[Verse 2]

My friends and I - we've cracked the code
We count our dollars on the train to the party
And everyone who knows us knows that we're fine with this
We didn't come for money

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your time piece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule (I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy

Ooh ooh oh
We're bigger than we ever dreamed
And I'm in love with being queen
Ooh ooh oh
Life is great without a care
We aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule (I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy

Hardly a racist anti-rap screed

Sorry, that wasn't directed at you, I was agreeing with your sentiment. I meant the writer who said Royals was racist. I wasn't very clear about that.

Pentatonix does it better.  No, the song's not racist.  This is an example of just looking with a microscope to find racism in everything.

Ah. thanks for the clarification.

As for the author of that hit piece,  I bet she has a degree in Blank Studies.

I like the way when she sings "We don't care" she almost stretches the word "care" into two syllables.

Some people wake up everyday just waiting to be offended.

/ Posted that on FB a year ago and some a**hole stole it and memed it.

Also, you can easily criticize all of the opulence and status symbols that rappers constantly reference without it meaning that you hate African Americans. Duh.

When I was fifteen, sixteen, when I really started to post on message boards, I definitely wanted to become a troll. It was almost impossible, because the dream was so big. I didn't see any chance because I was living in shiatville, I was studying. And when finally I broke away from school and became a troll, I thought, "well, now I may have a little bit of a chance," because all I really wanted to do was troll. And not only insult, but annoy. At the time, in shiatville, in '05, they had already interwebs. So I would take my computer, go to the boards, and view about 50, 60 topics. I think I had about 12-13 posts. I would partially sleep in my chair because I didn't want to leave, and I lived for almost a year on hot pockets my mother brought me. In the beginning, I wanted to do a series of generic troll posts that pretty much anyone else could come up with. And I said, "wait a second. I've seen this post hundreds of times before in some variation or another, why don't I use it?" And I didn't have any idea what to do so I used my computer as a toilet for my thoughts. I knew I was onto something, but I didn't know what the impact would be.

What your name, and what do people call you?

SmackLT: We didn't come for money

FROM money.

I guess people are going to miss some of the "culture" of this song.

Whilst American music is really popular in NZ, the content of the songs are about as alien to actual Kiwi life as you can get.   And as far away as that life might seem to a kid from an LA ghetto or a farm in Louisana, imagine how it looks to a poor kid from the bottom of the world.  Hell, even if you obtained a lot of wealth, your lifestyle would be nothing like Americans sing about because life is just not like that here.

Anyway, as part of the American dream thing Americans are taught to always be dissatisfied.  Always want more.  Being realistic and learning to be grateful for and happy with what you have is not a bad thing.

fusillade762: I like the way when she sings "We don't care" she almost stretches the word "care" into two syllables.

WTF language do you speak?  It is two syllables - "keh-uh".

/If thez an a-ah in a wuhd, a Kiwi will find a way to not pronounce it

I missed that part. The lyrics are copy-pasted from a lyrics site, and I did change "Crystal" to "Cristal" and a couple other fixes, but missed that one. Thanks for correcting.
