The republicans can simultaneously convince people by way of our crappy media that both the shutdown is good and that it isn't their fault while also convincing people that it's all Obama's fault for this bad thing that is happening. You gotta at least give them credit for being able to use our media to their advantage.

Why is the best news on a comedy show?

Because we have for-profit news, and for-profit comedy falls off the air if it's lazy and uninspired(except The Simpsons).

The GOP simultaneously claims wanting to shut down the government, and blames Obama for letting the government be shut down.

That's not farting and pointing at the dog. That's farting, inhaling deeply through the nose, and giggling.

Because "Journalists" these days are so terrified of not getting "access" that they'll not ask any hard questions. To avoid being labeled as "liberal media" they will be "unbiased" by simply explaining both sides of the argument without attributing actual facts/fault. Because they are more concerned with ratings than truth.

And now the talking points from the propaganda machine claim defaulting on the Debt Ceiling would be no big deal.

Putting aside that this flies in the face of anyone who so much as took a undergrad macroeconomics course in college, they're negotiation position is now  "This is a stick up!!!   Give everything I want, or I'll squeeze the trigger .... and then nothing will happen.   Don't make me do this ....... thing that has absolutely no consequence."

That kind of showed he is a "lib", because he went for the single-payer line. What it did show is that they aren't water-carriers for the Democratic party.

In Summary:

The Senate passes a budget on March 23 but a conference committee is blocked 19 times by Republicans

When it becomes clear that the budget isn't going to be acted on the Senate accepts house bill

The tea party smelling blood in the water and having only gotten 100% of what they wanted decides to pile on with any and every request their fevered minds can think of

The tea party whines that Obama won't negotiate with them

That whole segment is pure gold. It's the funniest, most insightful and most poignant statement anyone's made about the shutdown.

It's crazy to pay a ransom to someone who wants to execute their hostage anyway.

Did you guys get the important part of that?

Stephanopolous: "Did you make a deal with the Senate to fund the government?"
Boehner: "Yes, but we decided to break the deal to take a stand over Obamacare"

There we go.

That's the ONLY THING YOU NEED TO KNOW.  Boehner saying in his own words that this isn't Obama refusing to negotiate, it's Boehner "taking a stand" on the ACA, and that HE NEGOTIATED WITH HARRY REID AND BROKE HIS WORD.

Image macros, STAT.

Yea, I noticed that. I had only heard slight references to that supposed deal yesterday, but didn't know how accurate they were. To see video of Boehner actually saying, "Yea, we totally had a deal, like months ago. But we decided, 'fark it, we want more'."

Actually yeah, that would be awesome. If someone could make an image macro that simply and concisely explains: a) why the shutdown was the GOP's fault, b) why the democrats are refusing to pass bills funding specific things (war memorials and so on) and c) why Obama can't negotiate without greatly weakening the executive branch, it'd see a hell of a lot of use.

It'd certainly save me a lot of time posting replies to morons on Facebook.

Here's the Jones segment.

The whole episode is worth watching, as it includes an interview with that girl that was shot by the Taliban for endorsing education for women. It was ridiculously inspiring.

Stewart has been on fire since he got back from his break over the summer.  Not only with the news segments but the interviews.  His interview last night, the one last week with the writer who did the transalation of the book written by the boy with Autism and the Hugh Jackman interview (discussing gun laws in Australia) are probably the three best he has done in years.  I think the break re-energized him.

It's not the first time he's done this either. He held the country hostage on the last debt argument, as well.

But, it's all 0-bammy's fault for not conceding to all Raging Boehner's wishes. To the point, the Republicans demanded certain concessions, the Dem's caved and gave them EXACTLY what they wanted, and the Republicans balked and said they wanted more.

This is why Obama refuses to bend on this, last time he did, they screwed him over and demanded even more.

It's not straight up what was said, but here's the exchange:

BOEHNER: It's about having a conversation. I gave the Senate majority leader some advice at the White House about how to proceed. I gave him some advice over a week ago about how to avert this. And yet they refuse to do it.
STEPHANOPOULOS: But Mr. Speaker, he says -- and he said it publicly on many occasions, that you came to him back in July and offered to pass a clean government funding resolution, no Obamacare amendments, that was $70 billion below what the Senate wanted. They accepted it. And now, you've reneged on that offer.
BOEHNER: No, clearly there was a conversation about doing this.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Several conversations.
BOEHNER: Several. But--
STEPHANOPOULOS: And you offered a clean resolution.
BOEHNER: But I and my members decided the threat of Obamacare and what was happening was so important that it was time for us to take a stand. And we took a stand.

well, daily show viewers are better informed than fox viewers, regardless of whether it's news or not. and that IS really sad.

hell, people with NO news exposure are better informed than fox viewers. that means that fox is actively engaging in disinformation. not that this is any surprise.

Boehner says "conversation" at least 22 times in that interview. Is he building a strategy off of using that word instead of "negotiations"?

As far as important parts of the transcript, I guess I'd go with this:

STEPHANOPOULOS: And you offered a clean resolution.

BOEHNER: But I and my members decided the threat of Obamacare and what was happening was so important that it was time for us to take a stand. And we took a stand.

...

STEPHANOPOULOS: You also said you didn't want to put Obamacare on the CR.

BOEHNER: But providing -- providing fairness to the American people, under Obamacare, is -- all we're asking for.

I mean, I wish George would've pushed a bit more, but it's basically:

"You didn't want this before. You said you didn't want it."
"Yea, but we want it NOWWWW!"
