About a year or so after 9/11 I saw an undercover investigative piece on how ridiculously easy it was to obtain that amount of ammonium nitrate.

Weirdest thing I got out of this was that his ex-wife called the police because she hadn't heard from him in one whole day.

/does she "talk him down" daily, or just miss her stalker ex?

Why would you need to have an undercover investigative piece to know that it will always be very easy to get large amounts of fertilizer?

I bet Keith would survive the blast and light a cigarette from the embers.

Because rules were put in place after the OKC bombing.  Not that you would be prevented from buying the stuff if you're, like, a farmer or something.  But that there were requirements and permits and stuff.

Journalist just drove up to a supplier and had bunch loaded up into a pickup and paid in cash.  Didn't need to show ID, permit, nothing.

Which sadly is why no matter how much our intelligence tries, you'll hear stories like this.

Callahan's ex-wife, Mary, called police early that day, saying she had not spoken to him in over a day and asking them to check on him.

I wonder which one is crazier, they guy making bombs or the lady who calls 911 because she hadn't talked to her ex for a WHOLE DAY!

"He is a delightful gentleman who never had any intention to make a bomb and never intended to hurt anybody," Meehan said.

See it's fine he ACCIDENTALLY the whole bomb

Free on bond, Callahan is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 16 in state Superior Court in Bridgeport.

How do we know he doesn't have a huge cache somewhere else and this will be the tipping point for him to use it?

Scary...

Also:

In talking to officers, police said Callahan admitted to taking numerous prescription medications, along with a mixture of medications that had not been prescribed for him, but he said he is a chemist and knows how to order medications from the Internet.

Scarier yet

I thought they started putting additives in A. Nitrate after OKC that made it much more difficult to use it as an explosive?  You basically would have an extra labor-intensive step if you wanted to turn it into a bomb, so you could still make a small one, but it would take a huge effort to amass the same amount used in OKC.

I read about it because the US was pressuring Pakistani A. Nitrate suppliers to start adding the same thing to at their factories.  All but like 1-3 suppliers agreed, but something like 90% of the IEDS that used A. Nitrate in Afghanistan could be traced back to those same 1-3 factories.  (it was a few years ago so my numbers aren't precise, but the general ideas should be correct).

So it wouldn't surprise me you could roll up and buy a large amount of it without any ID or anything...assuming they had treated the stuff to make it less effective at making things go Ka-blooey.

Fubini: He seems awfully courteous for a crazy guy.

Crazy people are often quite courteous and friendly. They get hostile when they think someone is interfering with or harming them. The problem is that many crazy people mistake perfectly harmless behavior for an attempt to harm and act accordingly. This leads morons, idiots, and other total wastes of DNA to believe that crazy people are usually unfriendly or hostile. They're usually actually just scared.

Holy Hell, I installed the HVAC system in that large garage under the addition to the house (on the right).
