 - Mark 13:32

2 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

Dear evangelicals:

The bible is pretty explicit that Jesus would be back to establish the kingdom on Earth before Peter died.  Either the kingdom refers to the church (Catholic specifically or all the sects of the Abrahamic religions or something between, take your pick), or you've missed the second coming by 1900+ years, you tardy bastards.

Now leave the rest of us out of your revisionist tripe that isn't even literate in your own mythology.

Yours,

Jim

LasersHurt: rvesco: I'm just curious, particularly given the "right wingers get their news from biased sources like Fox and Limbaugh" mentality of most liberals.  Based on my informal review of FARK postings, It seems like liberals are heavily dependent on the Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Right Wing Watch, and the Daily Show for their world view.

Confirmation Bias. It seems this way because it proves what you already believe, because you are a partisan.

People tend to gravitate to news sources which echo their own preconceived notions and biases back to them. It's not unique to any particular group and even people who claim to be on guard against it fall victim to the siren call of the echo chamber. Probably the best we can hope for is that people adopt rational skepticism as their credo and gravitate to news sources which display the most rationality and skepticism.

Also, at times like this, I like to theorize about a  very special version of "heaven" where the self-proclaimed faithful would go. Sunny skies, everyone dresses in robes, all the buildings are stone cloisters and walkways, the grass is green... and everyone is called upon at odd times to sing His praises, no matter what they may be doing at the time.  Any prurience or sin is sought out and punished severely, and everyone is encouraged to look for sin in others. Anyone caught out is chastened and punished, and returned to the fold to seek sin in others, which they will almost certainly find. On the surface, it may be harmonious, but deep down it more resembles a mental image of William Blake's where the angels are monkeys chained together at the waist, tearing each other apart and feasting on each others' organs. (Maybe not quite  that bad; I may have to go back and reread Marriage of Heaven and Hell to refresh my recollection.)

Eh, I'm an atheist and I'm perfectly willing to spend time in Church.  Like a disproportionate number of atheists in a society where the "starting condition" is pretty much Christianity before education normalizes it, I'm also an academic with an advanced degree.  So I got over actually being angry over people being wrong about things, or failing to understand subjects I'm more educated on than they are, a long time ago.  It's basically a core professional skill for a researcher.

I mean, I enjoy arguing on the internet about it because that's what discussion boards are for, but I stopped taking it personally before I was out of high school, so long as the god-botherers aren't actually doing something destructive like Bachmann always is.

I know people say not to interrupt an idiot when they are talking, to just let them dig their own grave. But it comes a point when you have to shut the person down because they are causing damage with what they are saying and it is going to be twice the work to fix what they damaged than to shut them down.
