(Daily Kos)   Of course the GOP doesn't want to spend any money. Why would you when it's the end of days and Jesus' return is nigh? At least, according to Michelle Bachmann (R-rreeeeaaalllly Farking Nuts)   (dailykos.com) divider line 196

If you're going to be raptured then you won't have to worry about paying your bills. So why not spend the time you have left racking up the bills just like Reagan and Bush the Lesser did?

2 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

Surely Reagan shut down the Asylum, and hence the inmates now get to be politicians.

Matthew 24: 32-36

32Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
33So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
34Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
36But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

This is the bit that I don't understand. If Obama really is the antichrist and these are the end times, shouldn't the faithful be spending all their time in church praying for a swift exit from this moral coil?

Whenever I hear someone going on about "the rapture" all I hear is them saying how great it would be to go to Disneyland Heaven but they don't want to die to get there. It's almost as if constantly telling themselves they get a second life after they die isn't enough to keep the fear of death at bay and they had to invent a story where they get to live forever without all that messy dying business.

It seems like a large number of FARK posts consist of a right wing opinion filtered through a left wing web site.

Are there a significant number of FARK posts where a left-wing opinion has been filtered through a right-wing web site?  Maybe there are, and I haven't seen or noticed them.

I'm just curious, particularly given the "right wingers get their news from biased sources like Fox and Limbaugh" mentality of most liberals.  Based on my informal review of FARK postings, It seems like liberals are heavily dependent on the Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Right Wing Watch, and the Daily Show for their world view.

Seriously. If you're so sure that your ass is about to get Raptured, why the f*ck would you need a flush bank account? Cripes, this Prosperity Gospel sh*t bugs the crap out of me, because the words of your own Messiah sort of overshadow it. Matthew 5-7. It's a little known set of passages known as the Sermon on the Mount.

1 And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.
2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
17 "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, "You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.'
22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, "Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, "You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
26 Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.
27 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, "You shall not commit adultery.'
28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
31 "Furthermore it has been said, "Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'
32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
33 "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, "You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'
34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne;
35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
37 But let your "Yes' be "Yes,' and your "No,' "No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
38 "You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'
39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.
41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.
43 "You have heard that it was said, "You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?
48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Matthew 6

1"Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
3But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.
5"And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
6But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
7And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8"Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

9In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

10Your kingdom come.

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

11Give us this day our daily bread.

12And forgive us our debts,

As we forgive our debtors.

13And do not lead us into temptation,

But deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

14"For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 "Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
18so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;
20but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
25 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
27Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28"So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;
29and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31"Therefore do not worry, saying, "What shall we eat?' or "What shall we drink?' or "What shall we wear?'
32For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Matthew 7

1 "Judge not, that you be not judged.
2For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
3And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?
4Or how can you say to your brother, "Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye?
5Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

6"Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
8For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
10Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
12Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.
14Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

16You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
21 "Not everyone who says to Me, "Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22Many will say to Me in that day, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?'
23And then I will declare to them, "I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'
24 "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
25and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26"But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:
27and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."
28And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching,
29for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

I'm a Buddhist, and I appreciate the message of your Messiah. I just wish more of y'all would actually LISTEN to the words and the message. Cripes, the Sermon on the Mount is one of the most powerful passages on taking responsibility for your own actions, your own salvation, for acting with compassion, and to do so not for glory, not for recognition, but out of love, not just for Him, but all your fellows. Try it again.

Dear evangelicals:

The bible is pretty explicit that Jesus would be back to establish the kingdom on Earth before Peter died.  Either the kingdom refers to the church (Catholic specifically or all the sects of the Abrahamic religions or something between, take your pick), or you've missed the second coming by 1900+ years, you tardy bastards.

Now leave the rest of us out of your revisionist tripe that isn't even literate in your own mythology.

People tend to gravitate to news sources which echo their own preconceived notions and biases back to them. It's not unique to any particular group and even people who claim to be on guard against it fall victim to the siren call of the echo chamber. Probably the best we can hope for is that people adopt rational skepticism as their credo and gravitate to news sources which display the most rationality and skepticism.

Also, at times like this, I like to theorize about a  very special version of "heaven" where the self-proclaimed faithful would go. Sunny skies, everyone dresses in robes, all the buildings are stone cloisters and walkways, the grass is green... and everyone is called upon at odd times to sing His praises, no matter what they may be doing at the time.  Any prurience or sin is sought out and punished severely, and everyone is encouraged to look for sin in others. Anyone caught out is chastened and punished, and returned to the fold to seek sin in others, which they will almost certainly find. On the surface, it may be harmonious, but deep down it more resembles a mental image of William Blake's where the angels are monkeys chained together at the waist, tearing each other apart and feasting on each others' organs. (Maybe not quite  that bad; I may have to go back and reread Marriage of Heaven and Hell to refresh my recollection.)

Eh, I'm an atheist and I'm perfectly willing to spend time in Church.  Like a disproportionate number of atheists in a society where the "starting condition" is pretty much Christianity before education normalizes it, I'm also an academic with an advanced degree.  So I got over actually being angry over people being wrong about things, or failing to understand subjects I'm more educated on than they are, a long time ago.  It's basically a core professional skill for a researcher.

I mean, I enjoy arguing on the internet about it because that's what discussion boards are for, but I stopped taking it personally before I was out of high school, so long as the god-botherers aren't actually doing something destructive like Bachmann always is.

But it comes a point when you have to shut the person down because they are causing damage with what they are saying and it is going to be twice the work to fix what they damaged than to shut them down.

None from Virginia... WOOP WOOP!  WE DID SOMETHING RIGHT!

Yeah, no kidding. I was surprised at that as well.

We have ~5% of the nation's active duty military personnel, which means ~170,000 plus dependants.  An additional 11% of our workforce is directly employed by the Federal Government, which amounts to another 500,000 or so.

We know what government does, and we know how much it hurts when it's shut down.

Jesus was extremely clear on this topic, that there would be those who claimed they were doing his will, but were not.

Matthew 7:21-26:

21 "Not everyone saying to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will. 22 Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many powerful works in your name?' 23 And yet then I will confess to them: I never knew YOU! Get away from me, YOU workers of lawlessness.

I tend to think of this scripture every time these 'Christians' egg on the end-times and proclaim themselves righteous above all others.  Should the New Testament be correct and the "end-times" eventually come, I'd like to hope these scum of the earth aren't those that Christ finds worthy to enter his kingdom.

If ever there was a candidate for a lifetime supply of Thorazine, it's Michele Bachmann.  Mental illness is no laughing matter.  This biatch needs help.  Forget the fact I'm an atheist and think all that religious mumbo-jumbo is a load of shiate, she honestly believes the world is going to come to a complete end because the black guy in charge of the country wants everyone to have health care.  Let's ignore for the moment that the Middle Eastern gentleman in the Bible she probably masturbates to would want everyone to have health care because of that whole "do unto others" edict.

She claims to be religious, a believer in God, yet the very thing her special book's main prophet would espouse, she does not.  Why is that you ask?  Oh, no reason....the man currently espousing it is black and a Democrat, but that couldn't possibly be why.

2013-10-09 09:56:11 AM
I, for one, thank Michelle Bachmann for her ceaseless efforts to save the world from total destruction.  For as in Mark, no one knows when the world will be destroyed but God, so as long as Bachmann and her fellow lunatics keep telling us the end is nigh, we can all rest assured that they are wrong, and the world still has some time left to enjoy.

It wasn't a vote.
It was a letter they all signed and sent to Boner.
Here's an article with a map:

And here's a link to the letter:

It has all of their signatures on it, but man are illegible, so I used the map in the article and referenced it against each state's congressional district map for the 113th Congress and came up with that list of states and districts.

There should be a list of names somewhere, but I haven't found one yet.
I suppose one could be made from the state and district list.

Republicans will let the debt limit stay where it is. Just as they want to decide which parts of the federal government to fund, they want to decide which debts to default.

The right wing press keeps saying that the treasury can pay the interest on the debt, but that's not how the debt works. Many treasuries are sold at a discount to face value and that discount is the interest. When the treasury matures, the entire face value needs to be paid to the lender.

2013-10-09 10:49:54 AM
This is the same person who compared Obamacare to crack cocaine addiction. No thinly veiled racism there.

It's easy to roll my eyes and write this, but this person has actual political power. These people decide matters of national defense. Is it too far of a leap of logic that a Rapture nut might want all out war in the Middle East to kickstart Revelations?

Delay: The right wing press keeps saying that the treasury can pay the interest on the debt, but that's not how the debt works. Many treasuries are sold at a discount to face value and that discount is the interest. When the treasury matures, the entire face value needs to be paid to the lender.

There's also a misunderstanding about what the "debt" actually is. Everything the government is supposed to pay is a "debt." It's not just foreign and domestic lenders. It's bond interest, Social Security payments, and defense contracts. The priority to pay off bond interest - in a futile attempt to shore up confidence in bond markets - will need to be made from cuts elsewhere, because the money will eventually dry up. This whole hand-waving away of "Oh, it's only $20b a month for interest, we can find that in the couch cushions" is sidestepping the major issue that, no matter what, we will default on a debt, whether it's to J.P. Morgan or a janitor who files suit against the government who never paid him for services rendered.

Monkeyhouse Zendo: LasersHurt: rvesco: I'm just curious, particularly given the "right wingers get their news from biased sources like Fox and Limbaugh" mentality of most liberals.  Based on my informal review of FARK postings, It seems like liberals are heavily dependent on the Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Right Wing Watch, and the Daily Show for their world view.

Confirmation Bias. It seems this way because it proves what you already believe, because you are a partisan.

This is very true. Confirmation bias is something all of us have to be wary about, for it can trap any of us at any time, even if we are diligent about this.

This is why its important to have our analyses reviewed and repeated by others, so that the work we publish - through a collective effort - more accurately portrays reality.

In my field, the sciences, it is easy to do this. We have an entire system in place dedicated to weaving and teasing out the truth and removing biases and falsehoods. Sometimes we still get traps, but eventually the method will work.

In politics, it is much more difficult. I have found that Fark is one of the better places, as different people debate and converse back and forth through a variety of news sources and citations. Farkers, for the most part, tend not to get their opinions from biased news sources, but rather light analysis of those news sourcses.

However, regardless of the news, there is one set of news sources that is dedicated to spreading misinformation and lies. These include, but are not limited to, Fox News, Drudge Report, Rush Limbaugh. There has been multiple studies on this, and all of them have found that the conservative media misinforms their audience. This is not a liberal talking point, this is just straight from the data. If it were just a single source, I would be inclined to ignore it, but conspidering at least seven different studies from seven different institutions and universitas have all reached the same conclusion using different sample sets and different methodologies, it is hard to ignore the evidence.

Even with confirmation bias, when one side is dedicated to lying and spreading misinformation, it makes it that much more difficult to find and present accurate analysis.

I should note that this spread of misinformation is not limited to conservative media - Fox News et al. is primarily focused just on the political world. Outside of politics, there are other groups that dedicate themselves to spreading misinformation - and these are typically leaning liberal politically. This is the alternative medicine group. Additionally, the anti-vaccine and anti-science (in general) groups tend distribute across the political spectrum.

It's not so much "the poors". They'd find a way to keep their trailer park constituencies alive to vote. It's just a little too obvious to take it away from the real target; "the browns" This is a plan to retain power for old white men. The (hopefully) dying gasp of a bankrupt ideology.

I think it's worse than that. The old white scared people aren't necessarily against giving poor people insurance, it's that they've been duped into actually believing that the ACA will ruin everything forever. It's deliciously ironic since old people (white, scared or otherwise) already have government run health insurance and most of them would gladly kill you in your sleep if you took it away from them.

My problem with gold totally lies in this. It's value is tied to commodity markets, which are tied to the dollar. If the market collapsed, gold will be hard to value.

My in-laws bought a bunch of gold a couple of years ago. My wife could give two shiats about politics (until the Akins of the world spout their idiocy) and she asked her parents if things really went to crap, how would gold even do anything for them?

My FIL isn't a gun nut, but more like a collector (i say not a gun nut because he is actually responsible and everything is locked up). I damn near guarantee you that if stuff really does go to hell, that reloading station is going to be worth more than gold for quite a bit.

Totally agree with the gold valuation comments. But regarding the whole guns thing - can someone point to a time in history where folks just hunkered down with their weapons, rations and gold and "rode things out"?

In my mind this kind of thinking is so dangerous, because history has never worked that way. Even in the midst of a war people have to go to work, pay bills, do chores, paperwork, etc. All of the doomsday fantasies old white guys love to fap to are just that - fantasies.

In their mind they are going to bunker it out and survive some economic storm - not going to happen - history has rewarded those who adapt to change. If shiat hits the fan, you don't hunker down, you move and adapt - thats how people survive.

Elzar: Totally agree with the gold valuation comments.

Agreed, mobility and supply chain is the most important factor in any conflict.  The goal in playing soldier is a masturbatory fantasy.  Anything that feeds that feeling of being a brave soldier in a valiant battle protecting what they see as good is all that matters.  Short of actually risking their life because that shiat is actually scary and they would soil themselves.

It should also be pointed out that the 'biblical End Times' have about as much foundation in the actual
Bible as the LORD OF THE RINGS does.

friday13: Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: PocketfullaSass: If she really believed this, it seems to me she would be busting her ass trying to get the shutdown ended so poor women and children who utilize WIC wouldn't go hungry.

Those people wouldn't be hungry if God wanted them to have food. He didn't provide, so they are deficient, and with the End Times nigh, there's no point in saving someone who isn't going to be saved. QED.

Except I seem to recall Jesus saying "that which you do to the least among you, you do also to me" or something like that...

The beginnings of the concept of "The Rapture" as modern evangelicals hold to didn't come around until
the 17th century, and all the modern trappings were all thought up by one man in the early 19th century
by John Nelson Darby.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
New International Version (NIV)
16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

It was never written in Aramaic.  First Gospels were in Greek, though those are thought to be compilations of oral traditions.

/Seriously interesting shiat, early church history.

Be careful you don't fall off your stack of bibles reaching that far.

I never claimed he wrote that, and the fact that you are trying to claim I did tells me all I need to know
about you.
