In Indiana we just had an assistant coach throw a punch at a kid during an on field fight.  They fired him... thank god.

Jessh.. it's a little too emotional out there...

I would have thought it was because of spitting in hands.

Not that we ever did. 'Cause that's gross.

"He noted that sportsmanship has declined in athletics across the country."

I'm both shocked and unsurprised at this development.

I blame Indiana kicking their butts in the annual high school All-star games for too long.

The real travesty is that still nothing is being done about post-game blowjobs.

How many more parents must suffer the indignity of walking in on their precious snowflake gagging on the quarterback's cock while getting four-wayed by the defensive line?

I remember  wanting to punch a kid on the opposite team after an academic team match a few times. But, as it goes without saying that I'm a nerdy weakling, I did not.

Did they try a two year ban on participating in any athletics for the morons?

According to the missive, more than two dozen fights in the past three years in Kentucky have broken out at post-game ceremonies.

In the entire state? In all sports? How many games total in 3 years had post-game hand shake lines?

Fight are bad, mkay, but WTF?

I would disagree with your monosyllabic conclusion. There are a LOT of hyper competitive jackoffs, especially in rural areas with major geographic rivalries. Yes, some general dickishness and immaturity will happen from the youngins. I did it, and so did everyone else at one point or another. It's the parents job to stop it or establish the limit before someone legitimately gets hurt.

Look at the recent Dodgers-Giants attack where a guy got knifed. Fans get crazy and I blame all parties.

Better idea: teach your athletes that if they can't behave themselves during a post-game handshake, that they can go find something else to do with themselves.

Cybernetic: Better idea: teach your athletes that if they can't behave themselves during a post-game handshake, that they can go find something else to do with themselves.

But then we won't get any of that sweet athletic dept. money if our special snowflakes get cut from the team or benched during 'the big game', just think of how it might affect their chances of getting a scholarship!?

CSS time! I was an unpopular nerd that kept to myself, and always walked home from school by myself. One day a friend of mine was trying to catch up to me to tell me something, and she was known as the fattest girl in school. A couple of football jocks were picking up snowballs and chucking them at us. Except they didn't notice that her mom was waiting for my friend in the car. As soon as those snowballs went flying -- that girl's mom threw the door open, charged across the school campus and was ready to whoop some ass for throwing snowballs at her.

I decided to get the hell out of there -- I didn't want any part of that. Next day I get called to the vice principal's office. The girl is there, and so is her mom, and the two football jocks that were bullying her. Funnily enough, the only reason it wasn't elevated to the Principal himself? One of the boys was his son. The Principal's son was a tremendous douchebag.

Long story short, I was just there to verify what had happened. The mother gets banned from picking up her daughter from school because she was "menacing" the bullies. The two boys get a stern talking to and reminded that they can't afford to get removed from the team. The girl gets sent on her way, and so do I. Of course, they never get put in detention, or suspended -- the focus was less on the fact they were bullying the girl and the fact the girl's mom wanted to do something about it.

High School Athletics are a joke. We teach the kids. And we teach them that their value in sports is more important than how they treat other human beings.

I wonder if this will affect my son's football game this weekend.  So far despite some running up of scores and a few really odd calls, the after game ritual has been genuinely decent between the teams and the parents have been well behaved.  I would hate to see the handshake line disappear because of a few crazy people, how about we just make the few crazy people disappear instead.

2013-10-08 11:06:54 PM
He noted that sportsmanship has declined in athletics across the country.

In other words people headed in the direction of generations of competitive sports players and enablers have finally lost the ability to raise a child that can function in society.  Called it in '92.

2013-10-08 11:13:27 PM
I always thought a mandatory handshake line was moronic.  Give the kids 20-30 minutes on the field after the game to hang out and talk if they want to, or let them get the hell out if they feel like it.

2013-10-08 11:16:19 PM
Sounds like the KHSAA got sued and issued this "directive" to absolve refs and therefore the KHSAA from future liability.

Weatherkiss: High School Athletics are a joke. We teach the kids. And we teach them that their value in sports is more important than how they treat other human beings.

CSB: I was a high school athlete and by a quirk in scheduling I was in a study hall with a bunch of 8th grade kids my senior year. I sat front and center because I didn't want involved in jr high bullshiat. One day the teacher leaves the room and I hear this little girl saying stop it, cut it out etc over a few minutes. I turn around and see this boy picking on the nerdy girl. So I get  up, walk back grab the little d-bag by the shirt and tell him that we do not treat girls that way. I let him go and walked back to my desk and the girl was left alone.

My high school coaches taught us that we were representing our school, our fellow students and our community, not just ourselves, and we were to act accordingly or be punished.

Robots must be designed by an objective, third-party agency and then sold to schools in sets, then put out to compete against each other.  We will observe the outcome and record the score.  Then we will return home or turn off the tv and go to sleep.

Nothing new here. I remember the jackass kid on the opposing team when I played peewee football way back when, going down the handshake line punching all my teammates in their sides. No csb, just saying this is nothing new.

2013-10-09 12:39:25 AM
There is nothing wrong with shaking hands after the game. It should be encouraged.

Do some of them start fights at that time?  I'm sure they do.  Arrest those people, kick them off your stupid team, kick them out of your schools.  The people starting fights because they lost the game are thugs, and society will be better off without them.

2013-10-09 12:39:47 AM

2wolves: Did they try a two year ban on participating in any athletics for the morons?

Not sure about Kentucky, but they're relatively lenient in nearby Alabama. After a postgame coach fight last month, the AHSAA  put one team on non-restrictive probation for a year, and the other on restrictive probation for a year (no post-season games) since they were already on non-restrictive probation for a fight last year. They also suspended and/or forced resignations from the coaches involved. Google "Walker foootball team banned" if you want to read about it.

Slappajo: Sounds like the KHSAA got sued and issued this "directive" to absolve refs and therefore the KHSAA from future liability.

I think it's more preemptive, or they'd have mentioned the lawsuit in the article, but other postgame fights have sparked some costly lawsuits and injuries. Last year there was a lawsuit for "inadequate security" against the school district in Menifee CA when fans of an opposing team severely beat a player after the player's winning game. Georgia had a nasty post-game brawl last year as well; the coach who allegedly initiated the assaults wound up with permanent injuries and several plates in his head.

The NFL's $765 million concussion settlement a few weeks ago probably has all US athletic organizations evaluating different areas of liability. College and high school athletic associations are already in the crosshairs for similar lawsuits; players play about as long as NFL players (average NFL careers are 3.5 years), but there are roughly 500 times as many high school football players as NFL players in a given year.
