One could pose that he was the last sane person left.

2013-10-08 05:53:11 PM
Maybe.

Or it could have been a political protest or the accumulation of political/economic grievances.

But telling us he was just crazy (an unspecified crazy, too) makes it all go away.

That's what the media complex wants you to think.

If they reported the truth, this guys protests will be the spark to set the political world afire with burning passion for real change.

His family is saying that he was mentally ill. People who are doing it as a statement generally want that statement to be REALLY well known, that's kinda the whole point. This guy just lit himself up. :(

Nasty way to go.

THIS. Fact is, the US has not done jack squat for the mentally ill since Raygun closed down all the asylums, thus ensuring his re-election and the state of today's congressional Republicans.

THIS. Fact is, the US has not done jack squat for the mentally ill since Raygun closed down all the asylums,

Except Reagan wasn't the one who "closed down all the asylums." It was a 20+ year process, starting with the Kennedy administration. The asylums, by the way, were mostly closed down because of a shortage of patients - they didn't kick the mentally ill out for financial reasons, but because some doctors had convinced everyone that they could manage mental illness on an outpatient basis.

You see, there was a "revolution" in mental health treatment starting in the late 1950s, where the profession told us that the best thing we could do was give most of the patients drugs and put them into local mental health treatment centers. This, of course, was deeply wrong, at least in the half-ass way they implemented it.

A lot of people try to reverse cause and effect because they hate Reagan so much, but for some reason, they never complain about Kennedy and the Community Mental Health Act of 1963...

All of the damage was done well before Reagan took office in DC.

Well, i have a CSB for you. In my psychology class, we learned that a lot of people that go to mental facilities can keep their issue suppressed with medication. So, after they have the medication they are deemed ok to leave.

Thing is, something like 70% of patients stop taking the medication at some point after being let out. Thus they relapse. It's probably a compound problem across multiple levels. Patience not taking their meds, government closing facilities, doctors giving the wrong advice, etc.

However, I suspect people stop taking the medication for multiple reasons, and one of them is probably the cost of medication becomes ridiculous, and they might have problems getting insurance. Gee, i wish we had a system in place that could help these individuals with those problems.

I have really mixed feelings about DC Burning Man. On the one hand, I really admire the commitment of the artist behind the big burn. On the other I may never recover from the siJohn Boehner shirt-cocking or Michelle Bachmann dancing at the Jefferson Memorial dance space wearing nothing but cowboy boots a feather boa and and the too from the inside of a dozen glowsticks.  Plus Mitch McConnell kept asking me if I wanted to "dance with Molly" and winking at me really creepily

Really?  you think that's going to get someone banned on a site where the Buddhist priest torching himself and the Viet Cong shooting the guy in the head are posted all the time?

I'm usually really sensitive about this sort of shiat, but -as much as it can be- that's a tasteful shot of an actual news story happening.

It's convenient how everyone who does something we don't like nowadays is mentally ill.

But the warhawks who send armies to war to kill tens of thousands are perfectly stone cold sane.
