Series is singular and plural, so yes, that is correct.

Go Tampa!
Go Oakland... or, well, a game 5 would be cool, actually.  Go whoever!

They look really good, that's for sure. The fact that guys like Juan Uribe and Carl Crawford are contributing while they have Adrian Gonzalez, Yasiel Puig, and Hanley Ramirez looming in their lineup is pretty impressive. They're certainly capable.

That said, weird shiat happens in the postseason. And the winner of PIT/STL will be a tough out.

Just looked at the lineups. Leyland is running Jhonny Peralta out again in LF, while a banged-up Torii Hunter is back in RF. I get the need to put the best offensive lineup out there with the Tigers struggling at the plate, but I think Detroit is playing with fire with the defense out on the field today.

At least, I certainly hope they are.

Peralta's throw on the sac fly yesterday was fugly. I almost felt bad for him.

Maybe put in Sherzer in the third inning? Not sure if it would matter it is not the pitching that is killing them. With a better defense behind Fister Coco wold have been stranded at third.

2013-10-08 05:26:16 PM
It's a shame that it didn't line up so that the starting pitchers weren't Fister and Colon.

2013-10-08 05:29:06 PM

floor: Maybe put in Sherzer in the third inning?

I was wondering why Leyland didn't opt to start Scherzer on three days rest here. Leyland obviously isn't bothered by high pitch counts for starters in the postseason, but maybe he's more hesitant than Mattingly to run out his 1-2 starters as often as possible.

Fister looks uneasy.  Oakland doesn't have the talented line-up like Detroit, however I wouldn't make mistakes against them.
Rooting for Oakland.

Fister has good numbers vs the A's and there is no guarantee that Sherzer could perform better on three days rest. If Detroit wins tonight they want Max in game 5. Fister is a damn good pitcher IF he has the fielding to back him up. The Tigers do not in this series. He'll give up hits but balls will be hit into double plays.

2013-10-08 05:42:18 PM
50 pitches through 2 for Fister. Get ready, Detroit bullpen.

2013-10-08 05:42:30 PM
An even 50 pitches after two innings...

2013-10-08 05:45:26 PM
Maybe Fister just needed 50 pitches to warm up.  He's a great pitcher and could see him go to the 6th inning.  The only problem is that Coco did get a good whack at his last pitch.

It is hard to look at Fielder an use the words "Professional Athlete". Then again he makes plays like that.

That inning is how Fister's day should look. Base hit, double play and a K.

Oh! really?! What's his handle?

No seriously, in a sport like baseball, that loves their heritage, where things like this have happened since 1900, I think fan interference in a case like this should be allowed. As the rules are set now, the umpires seemed to me to have gotten the call wrong, but I don't care.

If a fan obstructs a player... thats one thing. If a fan becomes part of the game by being in a position more rare than winning the lottery, and changes the course of the game... I think that's really cool. One man's opinion.

I would think that anything above the yellow line would be considered an HR, however he could jump above the fence and have a play on the ball. So I could argue either way I guess...

Typically the best solution is most simplistic.  You are right and I couldn't agree more, move the fans a row away from the field of play, but since they pay a premium for these seats, that will never happen.

Look what happened since that play, now they will have something to discuss tomorrow for an hour on every ESPN show.

Well I think they should just take it out of the hands of chance and make sure the seats and wall have enough space between them so you can't reach out - so if they don't do that, they've got nobody to blame but themselves.

Only down 1 run with the Tigers bullpen.

Leyland planning on using Benoit for 2 innings? More Scherzer? I don't Leyland has many choices here.

2013-10-08 07:37:51 PM
Here's the thing.. the fan reached into the field of play and touched the ball. That's clear interference to me as I understand the rules. I could be misunderstanding since the umpires ruled differently and are paid to know the rules, I dunno.

This is different if the fan did not reach over and the ball was already over the wall, even if the fielder has a play. Once it's over the wall its fair game for the fans.

Leyland planning on using Benoit for 2 innings? More Scherzer? I don't Leyland has many choices here.

They keep mentioning that Scherzer hasn't come out of the pen since 2011.  So what, it's not like this is the first time he pitched in a late inning close game.

Here we go...

The A's deserve a run back for that interference IMO.

The Bestest: Here's the thing.. the fan reached into the field of play and touched the ball.

Here's what Wikipedia says:

Such interference often occurs when a spectator in the first row of seats reaches onto the field to attempt to grab a fair or foul fly ball. If the umpire judges that the fielder could have caught the ball over the field (i.e., the ball would have not crossed over the plane of the wall), he will rule the batter out on spectator interference.

Emphasis mine.  Since the ball would of crossed over the plane of the wall, interference was not called.
I think that's what happened, anyways.

The only argument is that the trajectory of the ball still looked like it was going to be HR. While the fan is reaching over the railing (clearly), the ball still looks like it's on track to fall over the yellow line. Was going to require Reddick to make a great catch, which he looked like he was primed to do, but it's possible the umps ruled that the trajectory of the ball was still going to take the ball out of play so it's not reversible. I'm not familiar with the specifics of the replay rules wrt fan interference.

He's been more hittable this year than Scherzer has. And assuming Colon doesn't give up a bad first inning like in game 5, it should come down to bullpens again. This game notwithstanding, I'll still take that battle.

Depending on how the defense is playing the runner, sometimes it's not a risk at all. Fielder not holding him on the bag, middle infielders too far away from the bag. Might as well take the base if they're giving it away for free.

The Tigers need long haul pitching for game 5, and you're not going to expect a guy who just threw 40 pitches to go out and pitch 6 or 7 in 2 days.

Even if he could do it (and really, he probably could), it would put a lot of strain on his arm and his emotional state. If they advance then they're going to want to use him sooner rather than later in the ALCS (in order to possibly use him twice if it goes to 6 or 7), and he's going to need a lot left in the tanks for that

Cool - though I didn't see anything in the lyrics that obviously really called out to that event - what's the connection, other than the band being from there?

within the song or between the band and the event?  The lyrics are vague and ambiguous and can be thought of in terms of disco needing to die, but their idea was supposedly that they wanted to start fresh off of their hiatus and literally burn and begin anew (also inspiration for the best song on the new album The Phoenix).  Again supposedly, they went out to the grounds of comiskey and burned their previous albums.

Kind of a cool story bro, but its ironic when used in promotion of baseball (IMO)

Can we get Belichick to manage a baseball team for a game or two?  The in-game interview would be classic.

Wouldn't have what 2 years ago?  Got this far?  Made him dumfounded?  But if the second is true, it would only because "they got this far"  Hence my question...  Since your statement made no sense to me, what the hell are you talking about?

I mean they wouldn't have gotten this far. They'd have been out of the playoffs if this were two years ago... Cleveland would have had the WC.

Isnt the MMO itself still up for sale, too?  As soon as he announced the project, I figured it would fail. Never would have guessed how spectacular the fallout from it would be, though.

Funny thing is I heard it was a decent game - I'm surprised it's been this big a failure too.  Then again, it's pretty hard to succeed in the MMORPG market if you're not Blizzard.

Tampa Bay, that was a tough series and you guys were battling the whole way. A few balls take a different bounce, and you could have won it. I tip my hat.
