rickythepenguin: desertgeek: What's scary is that 4-4 is possible.

and again, means the organization will have to decide if Palmer is a "buying or renting" situation.  if he's still playing shiatty but a wild card remains a possibility, and the 2014 QB class being deep, are you going to put the ball in his hands for this year and next?  this defense is too good to waste on average QB play.  or stated differently, without the defense sealing games with turnovers, where are we now?

carson palmer.  buying or renting?

Here's what I would do:

If the Cards go through the next 3 games at 1-2 or 0-3: drop Carson and see what happens
If they go an unlikely 2-1 or the ridiculously unlikely 3-0: go for a playoff spot

robsul82: Jake's been done, now I've got to post it later.

Falcons too high. Julio Jones injury's gonna save Mike Smith's idiot self for another year. And that's good for opponents, lol.

IIR yesterday's NFL Live C, Chiefs remaining SOS winning percentage is something like .250, Broncos is .350, and Saints is .450.

Steel is forged in fire.  Hopefully Denver gets so fat on cupcakes that they cannot get it together when they stumble across a real team.

Also, luckless, horribly regretting not doing that and hope it happens again next year.

ariseatex: neuroflare: I just noticed the graf says "TEN Midgets"

I find that amusing

Ooh, in December are you gonna change it to "TEN lords a leaping",  Di?

I suppose now I must. I also changed two of the names from last week to this week. I changed NJ from the Buttfumbles to the Jests since The Sanchize is out for the season. And the Dullphins because it makes me giggle.

mikaloyd: Also for the Chargers Graf name I submit Sandy Eggholes

Holes? What are eggholes?   I like where we're going with this, though.

Oh honey, you know I've already voted. I also voted for Moreno for the ground thingy. The man was a beast. I cringed every time he got the ball.

DirtyDeadGhostofEbenezerCooke: Dallas lost to the NFL's best offense, Denver? Sad, but not a problem.
Dallas lost to the NFL's best defense, KC? Likewise.

WTF is the deal with losing to SD?!?

Proletariat In Charge: Admittidly, I didnt check today, and I cant carry my phone at work so I cant check right now, but Siri has been reporting the Saints at the top in NFL for weeks, and the "BCS graph" up thread suggests the same based on strength of sched.

I've been wanting to post that for weeks, but haven't made it to the thread early enough.  I'm fine with a #2 spot on ESPN.  In fact, I'm just really happy to see the Saints rolling, and the Atl Clowns looking up from the cellar of the division.

They would be in the cellar if the Bucs didn't lock themselves in it and barricade the door.

Nabb1: And I think Romo is a very good NFL quarterback. But what separates him from elite status is that he seems not to rise to the occasions in situations like this.

Yes, he does. He does it all the time. But people don't pay attention when he does it. He has the highest 4TH quarter passer rating in the league. Is that some sort of accident? No. It just doesn't make SportsCenter when he comes through. And you, as a fan of another team, have no reason to take note of it when he doesn't fark it up.

pfhobia: It is still ridiculous that they put up 48 points and still had to run the 2-minute drill. Absolutely unbelievable.

I think that's more of a testament to how good the Broncos are, rather than how "terrible" Romo is. Get real, you didn't have the Cowboys coming anywhere close to winning that game before it started. So don't act all smug now.

And I looked around to see if I'm the only one who's thought of that.  Apparently not: http://m.tmi.me/1akkej

But I don't believe him.

In my totally unbiased opinion, Atlanta should send Gonzales over to the Saints for his chance at a Superbowl.  A 2 TE formation with Graham and Gonzales would be near unstoppable.

I have a very good friend who's a Broncos fan and was texting me all game bitaching about the porous defense. Missed tackles, poor pass coverage, the whole lot.

Yes, some of that was Romo having the best game he'll ever have (ignoring the pick, of course). But the Broncos' D needs a LOT of help because they were just terrible. Their only saving graces from Sunday are the 2 forced turnovers, forcing the only punt of the game and that they won.

Well, maybe it's not fair, but Romo has done that enough to have that reputation. Payton Manning was largely considered a guy who couldn't win when it counted most as a college QB because he could never get past Spurrier's Florida while carving his name all over the record books. Until he comes up big in a big game and by that I mean deep in the playoffs or in a game like this and not against a bad Redskins team, it will stick with him.

Good thing the Saints are the very last team the Falcons would ever trade a deadly weapon to.  It would be like if the Cowboys decided to tank and traded, I don't know, DeMarcus Ware to the Redskins.  In a year that the Redskins were good.  Not happening.

Nabb1: But in the end, this is not fantasy football, and his interception was perhaps the critical difference in the outcome of the game.

No.  The critical difference in the game was a defense that forced zero punts and allowed 51 points.  Romo's goof gave the Broncos 3 points.  Three.  That's it.  If you have a game where interceptions lead to three points against you, and your TD/INT ratio is 5/1 for over 500 yards and 48 points, that quarterback is golden for the day.

Romo has flaws.  Bad ones, and I'm not often a defender of him.  But he was golden on Sunday.  If your offense puts up 48 points in the NFL, you're not to be blamed.  EVER.  100% of the problem Sunday was the defense.

And people, please, give up on the "clutch" argument.  It's BS.  It's always been BS.  It's statistically and objectively crap, and is just used as narrative fodder for the bobblehead blowhards at ESPN.  Don't feed the trolls.

2013-10-08 05:41:24 PM
I wish there was a stat for 'last minute victory drives'. Something that counted if your team was down in the last 5 minutes or so and you lead them to a win.

I found a 'game winning drive' stat on pro-football reference, but it's pretty useless. Romo has one for a game they won 35-14 over the Jags in his first year, when the. Jags didn't score after a 14-0 lead in the first, with the game 13-14 at the start of the fourth. 20-14 within a minute. It wasn't a close game by anywhere near the end.

I think if we found an actually useful list it would be interesting.

If the Falcons did trade Gonzalez, and they wont, Id like to see him retire going into the playoffs as a Chief. Which is a hard thing to say for a Raiders fan. Yet if the Cowboys had allowed that interception to be converted for seven, they would have had a chance to tie.

I would consider that one final mistake by the defense that day.

It's not a "clutch" argument. It's about making certain decisions in certain situations. It's why great closers are so hard to come by in baseball. The last three outs are the hardest to get. Pitching in the ninth with a small lead is different than pitching in the rest of the game.
